Voltron:LD Retro-ish Poster by FrankRT Voltron:LD Retro-ish Poster by FrankRT
Alternate Title: Voltrek - The Motion Picture

In a similar style to my previous Big Hero 6 poster, I decided to cross Voltron and Star Trek again in a poster that takes after The Motion Picture and Beyond. So, several days in production, the result is thus! As the tagline puts it, there is no comparison. At least, not to anything I've done so far.

Tumblr Crosspost!

UPDATE! 13/10/2016 Minor adjustment; changed the signature colour so it doesn't clash as much.

UPDATE! 1/11/2016 Due to my faulty memory, Steven Yeun was incorrectly identified in the credits as Stephen Yeun. Gotta stop me doing that, guys! Anyway, this discrepancy is now fixed.

UPDATE! 8/3/2017 Fixed the copyright numeral. That's twice I've made that same mistake, where I put the year as 2006 instead of 2016!

UPDATE! 26/3/2017 Aw hell! I was looking at the print of this poster I got for myself, and I noticed I made another typing error, where Joshua Hamilton was incorrectly identified as "JOSHUA HAMIILTON". Well, at least this misprint is the only one I've sold...

Well, the best way to explain it is that you really did deliver what the title promises. The colors genuinely feels so retro as well as the effects and details that you put in this poster. The characters look really well done and detailed like the show and the way the characters are arranged is, again, retro. The arrangement of the poster really does feel like a touched up sci-fi poster that carries some retro themes in it.

When I look at this, I overall see it being beery retro and I like it that way. From the colors, arrangement, and everything on this, you delivered what you promised in the title.

Let me tell you the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this poster: Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. The spectrum effect in the background is reminiscent of Moonwalker's own poster. I wonder if you used Moonwalker as a reference. The space effect also kind of takes from other 80's posters, like those from Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, (maybe?) and other nostalgic shows. I guess that definitely means you captured the essence of retro in this poster!

And it is indeed fitting for a story like this. A group of space voyagers traveling with robots and fighting with lasers really calls back to those 80's and 90's tropes of yesteryear. It's a nice play with nostalgic folks. I also like how the characters are represented by color and not only that, their designs are unique as well, ranging from anime-ish to cartoon-ish. They do well in capturing each character's kind of personality.

For example, the girl in green identifies as the technical wide-eyed youth with her anime sized eyes and wavy hair. (or is it a boy? X3 I get confused with sexes sometimes) The guy in blue also seems like the smart, yet nervous character. His small pupils and fine hair seem to give that sense.

If I have anything to nitpick, it would be that there is a lot of space in the top. Not that it is a big problem. It could be easily fixed if maybe you took the tagline, "THERE IS NO COMPARISON," and maybe put it on the top of the poster instead of the bottom. (or really any text or fake actor names, just to fill in that space at the top)

If this is a comic project you plan to do in the future, I may like to give it a look just out of curiosity and just by judging from this poster. I look forward to what you may post next!

hey from ProjectComment!
thats a realy cool pôster!! makes me want to know more about it!( i dont know the movie..) i liked the colorfull lines and the perspective added to them but they could have more profundity like something tridimensional. of course it maybe wasant the idea cause you did a reto like pôster so maybe its part of the conception of the pôster and if so its great! i liked the space behind with all those stars it seems really epic! and the robot in front of the Picture gives more movement impression and creates dinamic in the pôster! the title is really good too i loved the smoke effect that chanches with the color behind its perfect! and the characters faces makes you think that theres a really importante mission to them to finish ( its epic too) its nice! i really think you shoud be really proud of this pôster because it looks professional and follows a well decided aestetic line!( its the hardest part i guess)and its beautiful!

Well, I'm not one to profit off other people's work, but... I'll have to see what I can do.
