Classic adventure fiction has always relied heavily on visual presence. Long before a villain speaks or acts, the audience often understands who that character is through silhouette, posture, costume, and atmosphere alone.
Many of the most memorable antagonists in swashbuckling fiction are not defined purely by brute force or exaggerated design. Their danger often comes from restraint, intelligence, theatricality, and the sense of control they project within the image itself.
