Description

Art. 21
All persons have the right to express freely their ideas by word, in writing and by all other means of communication.
The press may not be subjected to authorisation or censorship.

These are the first two paragraphs of the 21st article of the Constitution of Italian Republic. Or at least what should be like in Italy and in any other democratic country.
Well, Italy apparently will not be a democratic country any longer. In the name of protecting citizens' privacy, our Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is pushing a bill that would severely restrict police use of wiretaps. This bill would also impose harsh jail terms on journalists who report the contents of bugged conversations.
As the opposition continued to present draft amendments to the decree, Silvio Berlusconi on Thursday used his majority and a confidence vote in his government to speed it through parliament. The largest opposition party, the Democratic Party, left the room before the vote.
Italian media protested, with the national newspaper "La Repubblica" running a blank front page, with only "Gag law denies citizens the right to be informed" written on it.
