Hello and welcome to this guide! Today I'm going to show you how I usually behave when it comes to making reptiles with Apophysis. I remember I used to struggle so much at the beginning, but once I understood the mechanism behind rep-tiles everything was way easier.
But...what's a reptile even?
The name was coined as a pun (in relation to actual reptiles, like snakes or crocodiles), although in this case it's the short form for repetition tile.

Basically, many tiles of the same shape and size combine to form a bigger tile with the same shape.

Hi, I'm bezo97, and today I'm going to talk about the basic usage of DLL plugins.
By the end of the tutorial, you'll have learned about the importance of plugins, where to look for them, how to install them to your fractal software (Apophysis or Chaotica), and how to troubleshoot issues related to plugins.
1. Introducing plugins
The fractal software you're using has several built-in transforms (like Linear, Spherical, Bubble). Although these provide the artist an endless space to explore, the fractal patterns might become repetitive by frequently using the same transforms, which can often lead to artist’s block.
Plugins solve this problem by extending the fractal software. Think of plugins like a way to add extra variation to the fractal artist’s palet
Putting a Gnarl into bTransform

For this tutorial, you'll need Apophysis, Chaotica, and the plugins bTransform, tanh, and tile_log. You can acquire all of these plugins in the Essential Plugin Pack

It is advisable to turn the brightness up in Apophysis before you start (to roughly 50). This fractal is very hard to see in apo!
First, we need to make a gnarl. My usual method is as follows:
Tx1: waves2 = 0.98-0.998
weight = 100
freq_x = 7
Wire-Gnarls: An Apo/Chaotica Trick
Someone in Discord asked me how I was getting the details on my gnarls lately, and I figured I'd just write a little thing about it
First off, you need Apophysis 7x and Chaotica.
You're first going to want to create a new blank flame.
In your Apophysis editor, you're going to clear all variations and set waves2 = 0.995. Then, set the transform weight to 50.
Next, we're going to tweak waves2's variables just like so:
You're going to want to experiment! This is not the only way to make a gnarl!
At this point, you're not going to see much going on. We'll fix this. Create transform 2, and leave it just as it is.
Rotate tx2 90 Degrees CCW (left).
Go back to tx1 and rotate
Workflow: hypertile gnarl
Another commented workflow - this time I'm putting a gnarl into a hypertile
This is not a tutorial and its not entirely well explained ^^
1. As usual, I start from a blank flame.
Here we go, lets add some waves2 for gnarly shape. For now, I keep the parameters basic just to get the shapes I want and tweak it later.
2. My plan is putting it into a p = q = 5 hypertile, so we need a specific radial symmetry to avoid ugly overlaps.
Ntice it is not exactly perfect, but fine enough to not be visible.
3. Time to add some substance with sineblur. Later, I may add more blur and texture transforms, but for now, 1 is good.

Cancelling distortion with pre and post affines
A small trick that some people may find useful.
The basic idea is to use post affine (post transform in Apo) to create some distortion, and then use the affine to "cancel" this distortion.
Example 1: Hemisphere to ellipse
Suppose that you need an elliptic shape. As an example, I will use the final (camera) transform and apply it on the picture below:
First, add a hemisphere final transform. It looks like a circle, not like an ellipse:
Now, go to the transform tab of the editor. Look at the post transform. Both X and Y values are 1. Change X value to 2. This will stretch the hemisphere:
Notice that the pattern is too stretched. To cancel that, change the X value of the transform (not post transform anymore) to 0.5 (which is inverse of 2 we used above). You shall have something like this:

I've spend quite some time trying to re-code some of the transforms made by zy0rg recently, and I guess I feel a bit like rambling a bit about it - specifically about some cool and underappreciated aspects.

Post_smartcrop is very commonly used as a regular post transform, with variable static = 2. An example of this is the picture that opens this article. The smartcrop parameters that produce this crop shape are the following:

But there is a different approach to it. Not common at all - it is well possible that Zy0rg is actually the only person using it, and this is why I want to highlight it. We can mix up
Today, we will look at Glynnsim3 transform by eralex61: GlynnSim plugin
It can be used to create works like the ones below:
Lets see what is it all about
The basic shape
Lets first figure out what glynnsim3 does. We will apply it as final transform to a checkboard pattern.

The width of the ring is controlled by the thickness variable.

This also requires an unreleased plugin by zy0rg, called hypershift. As aposhackers have been spreading it from artist to artist, i just sneak out a link ^^ If zy0rg has anything against it, please lemme know, i'll take it down.
Lets start with a basic hypertile, p = 3 and q = 7, and fill it in with some blurry hemisphere:
We have those huge holes. They seem quite not easy to fill in. If you, for example, add a second hemisphere and move it around using a post transform, you still get some artifacts (notice that there is a sha
