I'm really digging into drawing properly once again lol. I think it will really help me in my career so why not. Time to stop procrastinating and just get my pencil moving. Stop being chicken shit, paralyzed by fear of failing etc. lol.
So I'm just cataloging my progress on my very bare bones blog. Weeeeeeeee
p.s. I don't anticipate much finished work for a while so my page here may suffer. I don't find deviantart to be much of a community for pursuing getting really good at the art thing unless I'm missing it because there is so much shit to wade through. What's with social media sites just trying to be everything to everyone in life? It totally dilutes the experience and loses sight of the point of the community in the first place I think. Way too much going on here for me to find anything lol. That rant wasn't really intended but yeah XD
Oh!DA not a place for getting really good at art? Depends on you, I think. If you decide this is going to be your workshop-studio, then that's what it will be. If you decide it will be where you hang out and get undeserved praise for chicken-shit, that is what it will be. Either way, it's your creation.
I have some links on my profile page you may find helpful for daily practice and research - like this book by Andrew Loomis www.deviantart.com/users/outgo… If you search Alex Hays you can find more of Loomis's books, which I'd urge you to grab up ASAP, while they're available.
It's not an ideal environment for me anymore. Too many distractions and it's hard to connect with people. I've been gone for several years and just came back so that doensn't help obviously lol. I miss the old message boards I used to lurk at a few back in the day and should have jumped in while they were around. I thought of going to conceptart but people have been complaining about that one too so I'm feeling a bit lost lol.
I'd love to find people who are in a similar boat just trying to learn but in a bit more focused environment. It's so easy to get lost in fanart and all the extra bell and whistle features on here. So for now if I do any finished work in between studies I'll post it here but I plan to do a lot a lot a lot of studies since I'm so behind and I won't post that here but on my sketch blog instead. I'll still come here and look at everyone's lovely stuff I just think I've been gone too long and am finding DA a bit overwhelming.
Anyway I've got a nice collection of pdfs and books regarding drawing and anatomy etc. I'm actually working on Loomis's collection now as is evident on my recent sketch blog post. Got a long way to go!
Well, then, you're set. Hope this time works out well.
Don't see the sense, for myself, in setting up a separate blog, as many seem to do. I keep it all here. But maybe it's because I don't have to go along to get along, which seems to be what this place fosters. "Awesome!" Right. If you can be honest with yourself and others in crits, then there should be no reason why you can't keep it here and have a good time with it. You don't have to make friends or solicit watchers. Just look for your place in the great circle - there are those ahead from whom you can learn, and those behind whom you can teach. And you never really know which way the gradient goes until long afterwards. Haha. Of course, that's more of an ideal than a reality, for me. I came here looking for help. Didn't get it. Studied on my own, then, before I knew it, got a reputation for being good at what I wanted help with! Go figure.
I took a look at your blog. Good stuff. You should be posting it here. No reason not to.
