PROTIP - Straight Vector Lines with SAI by fox-orian PROTIP - Straight Vector Lines with SAI by fox-orian
Paint Tool SAI has no shift-constraints when using a linework vector layer to draw with. This my preferred workaround. Gives me great flexibility to wing my perspective.

This may already be a well-known thing among SAI users, but I thought I'd make it into a mini-tutorial anyway :) This may be the start of a new mini-series of tutorial which focuses on a single aspect of using a piece of software. PROTIPS!

Edit: Added a new point about adding a quick curve. (#4)

Thanks for the tip! I just got SAI and was wondering how the heck to use the curve tool since I was used to using Medibang Paint Pro lol

I was just wondering if you could do straight lines in SAI today when I googled & this was most helpful; thank you ♥

Great tip Mat, has helped me alot. You seem to be a wiz on Sai do you know any handy tips to do circles & ellipses in the program?

the vector layer is really useful,
but sometimes I do feel the need of shift-constraints thingy because I can't make a straight horizontal/vertical line TTvTT

If you don't mind me asking, how do you begin when you begin to draw? Do you first make a sketch with the help of a perspective grid and add the clean lineart on another layer? I really have no idea how to begin drawing something like that digitally ... :/

good teaching. i'm using it quite a bit. kinda hard to control at the begin =/

Iīm always complained on how bad SAI vectors are, its a good idea but you canīt edit how much curved they are, I mean, its good for close curves but in very long and subtle curves it just donīt work properly, it looks like a straight line with the middle point moved a bit (for example, try to draw something with the pen tool while using vectors, you work normally but when its transformed into vectors, it generally donīt look that good and need too much editing). to fix that need to put up more anchor points and its too much work, i rather use s-7 slow tool and draw it with a pen, its soft perfect and can be edited with ctrl+T.

tl;dr: for perspective lines the straight vector lines are perfect, but not that much when you try to curve them.

Hahah who would complain about it? I think SAI's vector line art is absolutely brilliant.
I mean, you obviously wouldn't use this technique outlined here for making, say, a circle. You'd just draw a circle freehand. Maybe tweak it slightly if you made it oblong by accident. If you had to make a LOOOONG straight line with a slight curve, one point on the line isn't going to be enough to pull a perfect parabola. I really don't think it's too much work. I'm a master Pen tool user in Photoshop, and even then I'd use 3 points to produce a long curve. (It's just easier to do this in SAI since all I have to do is hold ctrl and drag the line, instead of adding a point, then moving it separately.) I still tend to just plain draw curves freehand anyway, but I know I've never once encountered a problem with the way SAI handles its vector trajectories. (If anything, saves me time from not having to constantly fiddle with point handles.)

sometimes it work properly for me, but generally, doing it bare hand with the pen tool in a normal layer gives better results, specially in wide curves, circles or things like that, it donīt always give a perfect curve with this vectors, need an exact amount of anchor points to give a precise perfect curve (if its too large, 3 points give a wonky one).

Photoshop vectores are way harder to learn but end up being as quick as SAI ones and with way more precision, excepting for the pressure option which is very god and the only reson why i use vectors sometimes.

lol repeat until finished xD yeah right X3
