It's been another year. A tough one at that. Many of us have lost more friends this year. What's better, to never open up and keep your distance, or to let someone in and risk the pain of losing them some day? Most of the time I'd say to go out and make those connections. You can't experience loss without there having been something to lose in the first place. That's most of the time. Then you have days like today, where the pain hits you with such intensity you wish you went your entire life without making a single friend because being lonely can't be as bad as this. You have to remind yourself that the pain you're feeling is the loss of the future, every experience, conversation, moment you'd have shared with that person that won't happen because of illness, or neglect, or someone falling asleep behind the wheel and hitting your friend as they walk home from work.
