MY ENTRY FOR THE GLASS HVV CONTEST
Let's start with the fact that I'm a HUGE fan of the M.Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable Universe (No joke) I had no idea about Split when it was coming out but boy that trailer hooked me! I watched the movie and became a HUGE fan when it turned out it was the sequel to the old Unbreakable movie in 2000. So as soon as I finished Split I came back home and watched Unbreakable. Oh boy, I couldn't wait for the third entry in the saga. And when it was first announced it was the first movie that I was hyped in 2019. When I watched the movie I reeeally, really LOVED IT! Especially ending although it was a very unpopular decision but I loved it.
In such a saturated superhero market the Glass was a breath a fresh air in the comicbook movie industry. I love the M.Night's unconventional superhero genre and his style of it. Hands down my favorite movie of 2019 so far along with "Us".
When approaching the creation of my original characters in the Unbreakable universe I knew that going into this required the maintaining of the artistic style present in the movies / promo posters. As you can see all 3 of my characters sport the colors and themes that mirror the movie Glass. I wanted them to be equivalent to the main trio in the movies and be the exact opposites of each of them in some sort of way.
An inspiration for this particular character was first and foremost a character piece instead of a walking pack of superpowers. I didn't focus on her costume, look or style this time but rather her emotions and her strong will despite into what she has become.
Her superpowers are very simple and not too bombastic. She can't punch a baddie or show everyone how cool she is because she simply doesn't need to. Her powers make her uncatchable and let her get away with stealing food and to survive.
This is a classic orphan child-runaway trope that is as old as time (think of Wolverine, Spider-Man, Shazam). But for my character I wanted to show her growth in her darkest times that led her to where she is now. The point of this artwork is to show that there is always a bright light even in the darkest realities of this world. And I hope I accomplished that with this art-piece and synopsis.
The main trio in the movies have Green, Purple and Yellow colors which led me to picking Red, Blue and Orange as the color choices for my characters. Blue representing the mood and the world of the Runaway, Orange representing the ancient and dreamlike feeling of the detective's powers, and of course last but not least - Red representing the vast power and control of the main villain.
Observer was the first idea of my entry that I had. I wanted to make a dark mysterious character shadowed in mystery. Not every character has to be explained and this is a prime example of that. I wanted him to be very simple, with no backstory, no biography and almost no description at all.
The artwork and his name speaks for himself.
Orange ghosts and red particle effects is a stylistic choice (Like spider-sense effect). They wouldn't actually look like that in the real life (or a movie in this case) and aren't visible to any other person. I look at it as a viewer's glimpse into the character's mind and soul. At least that's how I think they would view it themselves any way.
The third and the last hero I had in my mind was the supernatural detective with the most unique ability...
As you can see his ability is very reminiscent of David Dunn's Touch which lets David examine the events and deeds of a particular person after touching him or her. Sam's ability on the other hand lets him examine the events and deeds of people at the place of a crime. Sam called it a "Snippet of the Past".
When coming up with this ability I was inspired by and hologram recordings in many videogames (Halo / Mass Effect / Doom). Although there were a lot of characters who could see glimpses of the future in the history of fiction (Jedi for example) there was never a single superhero who could see snippets of the past. There was never a superhero with this kind of ability ever both in Marvel and DC universes (
) Kudos to me! (lol)
I would imagine Sam teaming up with David on few occasions in the years between Unbreakable and Split. Sam would be very useful for finding out what happened at the scene of a crime, while David would find those people and eventually take them down. These two would solve crimes like no other and would be true heroes in the mythos of this universe. He is like Shazam to Superman / Robin to Batman / Spider-Man to Iron Man.
All three of my illustrations depict the happening that occurs at the same time as the events of the film Glass.
