fotoFRIDAY began in August of 2006 as a project to inspire art with art. Weekly photography prompts provide writers with inspiration to create poetry, prose, plays, or any other kind of writing imaginable.

Over the years, fotoFRIDAY has seen the help of many staff members, volunteers, and deviants that helped turn a simple weekly journal prompt into what will again be a long-standing project for writers to participate in and photographers to share and expose their art.

fotoFRIDAY is currently run by secondmagpie with the help of RetroZombie. You can direct any questions in a note, or email us at

fotoFRIDAY LXXXV: Too Many Roman Numerals

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 27, 2010, 12:26 PM

Too Many Roman Numerals

What am I talking about? No one can possibly have enough roman numerals! :P

A few notes before we hop into this week's prompt. First, I'd like to take a moment to remind our writers that when uploading your writing to dA (or anywhere else!) you cannot use the photograph as a thumbnail without the permission of the photographer. If you've uploaded a photograph without permission, please contact the photographer or pull down the thumbnail. It's okay to post a piece of writing without a thumbnail, too!

We've been off to a slow start this month, but there's been plenty of good writing to go around, as you can see on the fotoFRIDAY August article. Remember to give it some love, and take a look at your fellow writers' work! There's some great stuff in there.

We're also going to be holding a contest (oooh, aaah) in the next coming weeks, so keep an eye out for it. ;)

Dark Places

Often, our writing is inspired by two things: very happy moments or very dark moments. Never be afraid of writing when times are bad -- not only is it catharsis, but venturing into these dark places often let us explore parts of ourselves and our writing that can be some of our best work.

This week, I'm pleased as punch to reach back to one of our photographers who has given us permission to use her brilliant work from her gallery, divinedecay. Be sure to take a look at her photography -- she's incredibly talented!

The concept is simple: let this photo inspire you. It could be a poem, a play, a story -- any writing at all! There are limitless possibilities inside every photo, waiting to be explored, even if it's just to knock that writer's block to the ground.

After that, it's up to you to upload your writing as either a scrap or deviation in your gallery and paste the link in a comment to the this journal. Remember, if you want to use the photograph as a thumbnail, be sure to get the photographer's permission!

See how easy that is? Then why are you still reading this? Get writing!

Your entries are due Wednesday, September 1st, at 12:00 AM EST. Be sure to get them in on time to be included in our bi-weekly article!
