Hi!

So have you might have seen, the group now have galleries! We made one gallery per software but we might have forgot some of them so if you use a free or open source software and it is not listed, please send us a note or a reply and we will make one. You can post your art in the "other" gallery while we are making you a gallery.  Also, to keep things clean we have 16 pages of deviations to classify and we might do mistake in the process so watch your art just in case we put it in the wrong gallery. ;)

We also made a "multiple software" gallery for deviations that use as much two or more software. The Idea is not to put every creations using multiple software there, just those that use them on the same level. For example, if you make a 3D model with Blender and you use gimp for the texture, then it is mostly a Blender art. But if you have a 3D background in Blender but 2D characters made in gimp, then as the characters and the background share the same importance it would go to the multiple software gallery. In fact, I'm sure you all understand it long ago and I'm just confusing you right now.^^'

I think this is all there is to say. If you have other ideas that could improve this great please tell them to us and we'll see what we can do about it.

Thanks all and have a nice day!

Hi!

I have written a couple of articles ([link] and [link]) featuring two very interesting and not so very well-known open-source programs , and I'm looking for groups where to submit those articles so more people can know about this.

Would it be OK if I were to submit them here? Which folder should I choose?

Good luck with your group! :)

I was surprised to find that this group doesn't automatically accept membership requests. That does not seem to be in the spirit of free / open-source software. :?

Personally, I automatically reject groups that don't automatically accept new members. It feels too much like snobbery. How on earth can you even know whether you want someone as a member, if you've never even met them?

I am a big supporter of FOSS (or as I prefer, FLOSS - Free, Libre, Open-Source Software). It's a shame this group doesn't take on new members automatically.

You have a good point. It didn't particularly occur to me that it was contradictory. I just have a bit of a bias against proprietary software and I wanted to support and expose art made in FLOSS, not those made in proprietary. Occasionally I get member requests from people using the Adobe Suite :/

Although I really should just let everything be automated since I don't spend enough time on deviantArt to monitor this group...

Thank you for bringing this up. :)

Well, I certainly agree with you about the FLOSS issue. I have more than a bit of a bias against proprietary software - and especially against one particularly nasty company.

Unfortunately, lots of people think the important part of "free" software is the price.

Anyway, don't worry about my comment. I just don't like anything that looks like a clique. I can be a grouchy old curmudgeon at times... Guess this was one of those times.

Anyhow, I did set it to complete automation..

I actually did a research paper on open-source and it gave me a greater appreciation of FLOSS.

No worries; we all have our less-than-amiable moments :)
