[PAID] Colorist Wanted for Manga-esque Fantasy Comic / Webcomic
We’re looking for a talented digital comics colorist to take over coloring duties on our online steampunk / fantasy comic. The colorist will work over tight pencil art, and we prefer a coloring style that looks more “organic” than “obviously digital” (i.e. - no lens flare!)
This is an ongoing online project, and our comic is going on its fifth year. Currently we’ll be asking for between 4 and 8 colored pages per month, though we may increase that amount as time and resources permit. The colorist will be paid regularly via PayPal and will be required to sign a Work-for-Hire agreement with our studio.
To see what our current coloring style looks like, go to www.shadowbinders.com and look at the most recent comic pages.
HOW TO APPLY
Send a link to an online portfolio and your required page rate to contact@shadowbinders.com with the title “COLORIST” in the Subject line. Previous professional credits are definitely a bonus, but not necessary. The top candidates will be offered a tryout page, from which we’ll make our final selection.
This position will be held open until we find the *right* person for the job. Good luck!

www.shadowbinders.comIf you're requiring the artists to make a "tryout" page, this is better suited for the Projects forum. This one here is only for paid works, not for contests, spec work, etc, where only one gets paid but many do work.
That said, why are you requiring to see artists' portfolios if you are going to request them to do a sample free page for you?
Actually, we're only requiring the top candidates to submit a test page. That will be based on the strength of their portfolios, and it may only be that the top 2 or 3 applicants are given the opportunity. We consider it like a final job interview. You're not paid for the interview, but could walk away with the job. There's no funny business going on -- the test page will likely be a page of previously published work, so we're not swiping anything to use later without paying for it.
I've been working as a professional comics freelancer for nearly 10 years now. The "tryout" is the industry norm.
Good luck!
And "tryout" is not the industry norm. That's why professionals have portfolios. That some people think that employers take advantage of them is the norm doesn't make it ok. Rest assured that in the professional world no one does free work for no one.
Even with all that said, if someone wants to try their luck, they should do it, by all means. But it is not allowed in this forum.
I've applied for many a job like this, and for freelancers, a test page is normal. And sometimes, rarely, they will pay you for that even if you don't get hired. Yes, there are some people taking advantage out there and getting free work, which doesn't work anyway because then a comic would look like it's done with a patchwork of styles. But he clearly says, the test page will likely be something he already had done, and therefore couldn't use anyway.
I think you're being a bit too strict. This forum is for job offers, and this is clearly a job offer.
Yes, I'm being strict, since this forum rules are strict. You are not allowed to post job offers that are contests, pitches, spec works. Those go in Projects, even if they are offering money.
