I believe that DeviantART would prove to be a more useful tool in the art world if they also included an EVENTS listing somewhere easily accessible on the site. Journals are all well and good, but Deviants must already be watching your gallery to notice them.
If there was an EVENTS listing, where artists could post art openings, film screenings, happenings, poetry readings, or other art related events Deviant artists are up to, I believe this would greatly improve DeviantART's usefulness to the working artist community.
I would love to find Deviant Artists in my area that are having some sort of gallery opening. If I could log into DeviantART go to the EVENTS tab during the day on Friday, Select the NYC area, or Virginia area, or California Area, or London or anywhere in the world that has a collection of Deviant Artists, select today's date and discover a listing of all the opening near by that my fellow Deviants are participating in, I could then go to their gallery here on DeviantART decide if I liked the work and if I should support it, and if I did, go to the opening, because as we all know looking at a work of art in person is 100% better than looking at pixels on a computer screen.
Thanks for reading my post, let me know if any of you Deviants think this is a good idea. Why or why not?
i was thinking of a new idea..... music..... maby where you submit your art ,...it should have a description of a song you listened while drawing you art .....or to have a music player on your art..
good luck. dA "prides themselves" with NOT being a professional community so changes in this direction usually seem to be ignored. Thats what i have seen anyway. In a suggestion thread i made a while back I made the mistake of comparing this community to another one that anyone can join, but aimed at professionals. It's a great tool for 3d artists so I thought changing a thing or two here to make things more 'rofessional' might help the 3d art section's poor state. boy was i wrong. Never use that word here
it would be cool if they had an app in this web that traces your sketch and then you can edit your drawings, or just darkens the dark lines for the person.
sometimes some photos from sketches are too dark and sometimes its too different in color in one side of the sketch.
That sounds more like a Photoshop filter than something that any website would offer. I dont think this site offers any kind of built in image editing tools. Although, it sounds like it might be n interesting feature.
An events calendar would be useful, especially for larger deviantart groups... People would be able to get competition entries and such in without missing deadlines...
Interesting, I am glad that something is actually there, but I must say, it seems to be in the wrong section, "Culture?" instead of "Art News." I still think it would be more evvective if it could be organized by city and date. Thanks again.
Excellent suggestion. I think this site really needs an event calender of some sort. The news and journals are pretty ineffective to get the word out about gallery shows. I've actually all but given up on even putting notices up on here about any shows I'm involved with since the only people who read about them live too far to even think about coming.
I've been reading over this thread the last few days since you originally posted in the art scene. It's been entertaining to say the least. Not sure what some peoples problems are. Especially when this suggestion wouldn't effect him one way or the other.
I dont really know where to post it, but i think there is kind a problem when submiting a photo in the SNAPSHOTS category. I tryed to do so but i didn't notice where did my file go. Then i just thought i was having memory problems or something but i found it on the SCRAP place. I dunno if this was my mistake or something but i would like to let you know.
You should probably start a new thread with this concern, this is a specific topic in this thread, and the people that you want to read your message will most likely not find it in this thread.
Not a bad suggestions. Why jump thru hoops to find what you want on here. Info tucked away in journals and news are not public enough. Events are different and more immediate and should be broadcasted.
Thank you for your support and understanding where I am coming from. Hopefully, some actual schedule will be implemented at some point someday, because to me it seems to be the next logical progression in the usefulness of DevianART.
Ha ha ha, you rock!!! But it still seems as this one particular fella is trying to argue some very illogical point into the ground. I have no idea where he is even going with his point, yet he seill keeps posting them. I suppose it could make for some interesting conversation.
Journals of unknown users don't get much attention, so posting a "Tomorrow there'll be an event in NY" would be useless, unless you're a popular deviant, and even if you are.. there wouldn't be a clear list of events. News get attention, but people would have to go through all of them to find the events in their area, so I agree that there's something missing.
Ages ago there was a calendar where people could add events to it, like devmeets and such. It'd be nice to have a feature like that again, not for devmeets, but for Art events, galleries opening and such, and maybe sorted by country/state. Something like in Last.Fm where you can find concert by selecting a city
You're welcome. I think this one is a really good suggestion, especially cause deviantART is an ART Community and not just a random one, and that's why I think too it deserve this kind of feature
Thanks again. It seems that for some reason there have been some folks that have been illogically apposed to my little suggestion, and I have been trying to explain it to them for the past few days, in the most simple language I can think of, but it has been much like banging my head against a brick wall.
Sounds pretty cool to me. Having a calendar of deviant events, and being able to sort through it by date, location and what not? Sexy and community-building.
Well, as I said before, the Journal is not a public space, it is only seen by watchers of you gallery, and the news system is relatively useless, because of its utter lack of organization.
Again, Journals are not public enough to promote an event, News posts are not very well organized and quite buried in the site, and Devmeets are not about specific art openings, I believe they are more of a group meeting of some sort to collectively gallery hop.
News posts.. hidden? Surely you jest. Journals too hidden? Probably, but that's what the search bar is for then isn't it? You could organize a devmeet to go to a certain gallery opening is my point, and that such features are already all around you. All you have to do is look for them.
New posts = not well organized, click on the news tab, do you see anything there that says EVENTS? Even if I was to post a "News" story there, to promote an opening 2 weeks from now, giving people enough time to plan their schedules, by the time the event came around it would be lost in the piles of gossip postings and fan fav's.
I just did a search in the search bar as you suggested, for "Art opening New York City 11-21-08" I get a bunch of random shit posted back in 2004. How does that do anyone any good unless I am researching archival posts?
You are right, I could organize a Deviant meet up, I will try that. But other than date, time, place and event, I am not going to have time to give people guided art gallery tours of the city.
An organized calendar listing of events is NOT available on DeviantART, as it should be.
Look at the top of the News page. There are various categories for you to browse through and you can also search for events on the News page from anywhere on the site using the Search bar.

That's because no one has made any news articles about art openings in New York City since 2004. If you know of one, make an article yourself. Or course the search isn't going to reveal news articles that don't already exist.
Sure, I could search all day long and find all kinds of good stuff. I will even begin to post some things in news articles, but the idea is to make it easier for people to find things, not to make them search through 1000's of posts.
You do if they're recent events. That's the fault of the abusers of the system then, not the system itself. Sure they could go back to the old way where only staff can post news, but that would make people mad again. And how would yet another tab solve that problem? In 2 weeks your thread would just be swamped with other events, instead of "fan fav's" as you say.
I am basically suggesting to create a feature like "Eventful" here on DeviantART, just for Deviant artists: [link] Sure everything gets abused by shitty users, but it's a system that might keep events organized and user friendly.
