that's an interesting question. i suppose it's not impossible to think like a printer but to execute an art like a printer might be very difficult. when I did pixelcars I kind of thought like an engraver or router.
Create combinations of existing things. Most of creativity is that, actually. It's just that if you can't immediately come up with such things yourself, you could do them more systematically. Find multiple images (e.g. on Pinterest, and start with a small number) and create a combination of those. If you don't know what kind of images you want to look up, you could use a random word generator to aid you. As you get used to making such combinations, you'll learn what kind of combinations work and which don't.
Printers can print art, there is the printer method (some people can draw like a printer). I flipped the statement from drawing like a printer to thinking like a printer. This means that if you get an idea that idea will come out exactly like you imagined it.
