Making avatars...
I thought I might try my hand at making some avatars, however I’m not sure what platform to use for it ie is Procreate okay? What do others use? Any help appreciated. 😇

I use firealpaca. Dw, it's for free, has alot of tools and brushes, and it's easy to get into it. I usually use 100x100 for avatars default. Sometimes if you want to use it as a avatar I resize it in another website (I usually use ezgif it's not only for gifs btw.) I never tried procreate before actually, but use anything that you're used to. 
You can make them with any software you like. When I did pixel art, I made them with MSPaint. So yep, if you like Procreate, use Procreate.

Just make sure the final file fits the requirements of the site it is to be used on.

I use Sketchbook.
It is free and user friendly(easy to get used to at least for me)
It is suitable if you are aiming to create avatar/human faces whether it is simple or reallistic.
I too paint avatar/portrait there.You can check the result in my gallery.
If you would like to get advanced,maybe cracked photoshop or Clipstudio paint is an option.
It depends.
For portrait i usually set it on 1:1 or 1:2 scale on pixel.
For example 2000x2000 or 1500x3000 pixel.
For avatar or profile picture i recomend 1:1.
My standard for head shots are around 2k to 4k pixel because 2k below for me will make it look blurry,at least for semi realism.

Thank you for your advice. I will check these apps out. I already use Procreate. Just wasn’t sure what would of been best for this. I’ll have a peak and follow you too. Thank you once again. 😇
