Well, I haven't been around much.  I've been busier at work.  I've found the forum to have grown more and more tedious.  I haven't been shooting as much and preparing work for display.  I should still take time to go through those I am watching and comment on work, but I've just grown away from DA.

So, that explains my lack of DA activity.

I still pop in every once in a while to check for notes and such.  Maybe I'll get back into it later.

In the meantime, most of my time on the Internet is spent at  www.iphotoforum.com.
Went to Arizona Mills today to watch a Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest.

The winner was some grandma who ate, I think, 13, or so.  Her husband competed in the Las Vegas contest (I don't recall if they said he won or not).  So, it's apparently off to Coney Island and the nationals for her.

One of the other contestants, who almost beat her, looked a lot like one of my friends back in Austin.  It's weird, but since being back in Phoenix, I've seen several people who are dead ringers for those I know in Austin.

Anyway, freezejeans and geowulf were there as well and I think we all got some good shots.  It may take me a week or so to get any of mine up here, though.

For those in the Phoenix metro area, I would recommend not getting photo services at Elite Photo.  Here's my beef:

1.  There is a $2/CD "download" fee for digital reprints.  Now, this seems to be pretty standard in the area (and, perhaps, elsehwere), so I'm not sure there's too much to gripe about, or at least they're not screwing people anymore for it.

2.  When getting film scanned you must buy the CD from them for $2.50.  I asked if I could provide my own CD and was told that there might be conflicts.  So, I just assumed that maybe there was something special about them.  Maybe they were PictureCD or PhotoCD or some jazz like that.  Well, no.  They were normal CDRs from Staples.  We're talking CDs that you can buy for less than $0.25 a piece.  Not even brand  name CDRs.  That's a 1000% markup and I find it incredibly obnoxious, particularly since I was told that the reason I had to use theirs was because of possible conflicts.  So, I'm pretty miffed at this point, but there's nothing that says they have to change their prices if they don't want to.  I decided I would go ahead and get my roll processed and added to the CD I had already purchased.  I was told that I could not as they, apparently, lock the CDs when done.  At that point, I walked.

Now, the owner was, I felt, kind of snotty about it, as if I was talking out of my ass or something.  He made a big point about how cheap 4x6 paper was and yet they still charge a lot more for it, etc..  He said that most, if not all, pro labs in the city do the same sort of thing.  Maybe they do, maybe they don't.  In Austin they didn't.  He made a big deal of Elite being a pro lab.  Bologna.  They use a Noritsu machine and I went out of my way to tell them not to make any corrections to my film.  So, what the hell are they doing special?  We're talking about loading up a machine and hitting "go."  If I had the capital to to purcahse one of these machines I could do the same thing; it wouldn't make me a pro lab.

Anyway, needless to say, I'm pretty pissed about this.  Elite is pretty close to where I'm staying, but they won't get any more business from me.

You don't have to agree that I'm right, of course, but I just thought I'd offer that up for those who happen to be in the area.

I made the mistake of looking at the Help with Life forum.  Wow.  There are actually people in there who think that's it's cool that some 20-yr old guy is hot for his 15-yr old cousin.  Exhibit A for why that forum is bad mojo.  Seriously.  What the hell is the DA administration thinking?

What a bunch of jackasses.

I made the mistake of browsing through the photography section today.  Wow.  I can't even begin to describe how much crap is there.  Webcams, half-assed shots, the "rebellious" middle finger.  No wonder the halfway decent work (and/or the work of those who actually try) is buried and lost under all of this trash.

Just got back from Shoot the Bull, a dart store here in town.  Picked up a set of darts and a board.  The $2 Wal-Mart darts were getting a little worn.  Over the weekend I beat the mother-in-law at cricket with a score of 180-0.  Ha ha...  This should be fun...

Caught a program on PBS last night about Barry Goldwater's photography.  They had some stuff with him talking about it as well, and that was pretty interesting.  Sounds like an interesting guy.

Anyway, some of his stuff was pretty good, I thought.  Apparently some of it is at the Heard Museum in town, so I think I'll need to go check that out.

Okay, well I'm still in Phoenix, and looks like I will be for the duration.  The good news is, I've got cable again, so I can keep up with things here.

I think I've caught up on responding to comments.  If you got left out, sorry.  Hopefully I can get back into the photography forum.

Anyway, now I've got 364 deviations to go through off my watch list and the computer I'm on doesn't like my message page with all that stuff on it.  Oh well.

I am out of town for 2-3 weeks, or so.  As such, I may or may not be able to get on DA during that time.  So, if I'm not getting back to your comments and such, you know why.  I'll do my best to catch up when I get back.

Oh, there are chickens in the trees,
There are chickens in the trees.
Won't you listen to me, please?
There are chickens in the trees.

Now that's beautiful poetry.

Apparently at least one of my deviations was lost in a crash.  I've reuploaded it:  House - 2 of 4.

All right.  I recently got my BSEE from UT.  I am now looking for an entry-level electrical engineering job.  For anyone who doesn't know, the market in my field is pretty poor right now.  So, on the long shot that anyone reads this and even longer shot that someone has any connections, would you please let me know if you know of anyone looking for a EE (incidentally, my specific area in school was telecommunications, but I am open to other sub-areas).

I've changed my avatar.  I finally got King Friday the MMIII to scale down somewhat acceptably, but I had to crop it and mess with it.  Oh well, what do you want out of 50x50?  Somehow, others get theirs to look pretty snazzy.  Anyway, George was cool and all, and may come back, but I thought I'd give this a shot.

Okay, I think I've replied to all my comments.  However, since I'm lazy and put it off so long, and becasue DA is so weird about updating that sort of thing, I don't kow that I got to reply to them all.  If I missed you, I'm sorry.  Thanks for the input.

Was downtown today and noticed that there was a car sohw going on.  Custom and hot rods, or something like that, so we took a look.  There were a lot of cool cars, and then there were the Fords.

I figured out that my Les Ailes de Chevrolet is probably a '37 Chevrolet (didn't catch a model number, but I did snap off a few of a car that looked like it).

There were some sweet Road Runners, GTOs, Z28s, and SSes (Camaros, Chevelles, Novas, El Caminos), as well as, of course, there were some beautiful Corvettes.

There were a couple of sweet Camaro SSes there for sale, but, alas, they were automatics.

Picked myself up a sweeeet Trans Am shirt.  Oddly enough, there wasn't one Firebird there, least not that I saw.  A lot of nice muscle, though.

I snapped off about 20 or so positives of them, some of wihch I know I didn't get the exposure right on.  I should have the sldies developed by tomorrow, and by Saturday I'll hopefully have prints of any that came out.

For my macro-maniacs assignment I'm supposed to pick a piece of poetry from DA and shoot a photo for it.  So, I head over and notice there's a section for limmerics [sic].  I figure that'll do, since I can't stand poetry and if I'm going to have to use it, at least it'll be silly.

Well, the first thing I notice is the incorrect spelling of limerick.  Then I notice that it seems like there are very few actual limericks in the tier.  Doesn't anyone know what a limerick is?  "There once was a man from Nantucket...," that sort of thing.

So, here I am, trying to look for silly poetry, because I hate poetry, and I end up ranting about people not taking limericks seriously enough.  What's the point of having a limericks section if you're not going to require the submissions to be, shock of shocks, limericks?

And then I stumble across a "limerick" about ellipses.  Apparently, in this guy's math class, he was told to write a poem about a chapter in his math text.  Write a poem about math in math class?  What kind of crap is that?  No wonder the schools are turning out dolts.  "Okay class, today we're going t owrite in our math journals."  I suppose the idea was that if you had to write a poem about it, you would ostensibly be learning the material, but I don't buy that.  Save the writing for English class.

And yes, I am in an irritable mood.

Hmm.  I updated and updated my devwatch list, trying to get rid of images I had seen.  Time after time they still showed up.  finally I got rid of them, and with them went the comments I was behind on replying to.  I tried to go through and find them, so if I missed you, I'm sorry.  Thanks for the comments.

Friday is the last day of school (except for one final).  I'm finally through!  Now I just have to find a job in a crappy market.

I promies that after the weekend I'll get around to responding to comments and uploading more work.  I've been kind of lax as it's been really hectic with school and work.

Okay, my final project involved writing a program to calibrate and filter thermographic imagery.  I've given up on coming up with a good name for the program, so here's what I've narrowed it down to:

Mjolnir:  Thor's hammer; hard to pronounce.  You know, when I was reading Thor comics, I swear he'd say the damn name time after time after time.  I go to look up the spelling in the comic book, and I had to go through three or four of them before I found one mention.

Phoenix:  Of course, it's the bird that consumes itself and is reborn, but it's also "[a] person or thing of unsurpassed excellence or beauty, a paragon," which describes my project to a tee.  har har...

Vulcan:  The weakest of the three; just happens to be associated with with fire, which is associated with heat.

I really want to use Mjolnir, but I also really like the definition of "Phoenix."

Any thoughts?
