Holy shit, this movie.
Like, for serious.
Holy fucking shit.
I love it.
Let me tell ya'll a story: I saw Metropolis a month ago. You know, the animated version from 2001. I thought it was pretty cool, with somelikeable characters, colorful animation, and a nice little story to follow. Not a perfect film, but still pretty good.
In the trailers, however, I kept seeing the title "Akira" popping up. Turns out the director of said film was a writer and a creative adviser on Metropolis. I brought up Akira to a friend of mine, hoping they would know what it was, and they pounced on me, freaking out at the mention of the title.
I did a little research, since they told me they couldn't tell me what it was about without spoiling it. I found out that it was a landmark in anime, and animated films as a whole, has gained a cult following, and is still critically acclaimed. It was a major inspiration for the Matrix, as well. Hell, according to the Wikipedia article, Roger Ebert selected Akira as his "Video Pick of the Week" in 1989 on Siskel & Ebert and the Movies. That's pretty cool. So,it was on my list for about a month, but I wasn't fully roped in until I saw this trailer: www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/…
Look at that surreal imagery! That active animation! The colors! The backgrounds! The mood!
Immediately after coming home that day, I found it on youtube.
Two hours well spent.
Like, holy shit dude.
My opinion? Holy hell. It's a roller coaster of a movie. It's fun,it's entertaining, even a little touching at times, and it doesn't even feel like two hours.
The animation, of course, is wonderful, and still holds up incredibly well today. I love the two leads. A lot. And their relationship is something that is seldom explored in film. The story is really interesting to me, I love the setting, the colors, and the sheer size and scope of this movie is astounding! It's not without it;s flaws, of course, likethe two female roles that I personally think could be cut from the film entirely, and not much would be missed. Particularly Tetsuo's romantic interest. I mean, her sole purpose is to get crushed. C'mon.
Still, I love this movie, and I'm hoping on getting that sparkly, new 25th anniversary edition when it comes around.
I mean, woah.
I don't usually pick favorite films, 'cause that's hard for me, but this one's up there.
Haven't seen it?
Watch it. Hope you don't mind english dub with spanish subs. -> www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn9tvn…
All that aside, this picture was... a piece of work.
I'm not very good at side views to be honest, and even after practicing for a couple hours on some notebook paper, I was still a little shaky when I started this. Ears, shoulders, anatomy, clothing; they all become 10x more difficult for me when you shift them to the side. Particularly that coat. I have no idea why I struggled so much with that stupid coat. Then came coloring with my rented copics. This was initially going to be either all red, or all grey. In the end, I figured contrast would be cool, and I'm still not even 100% sure I fully succeeded in accomplishing it. Like, Kaneda's outfit is all red, but I wanted there to be a bit more of a balance, so I made everything but the coat grey scale. Somehow, it looks a little wrong to me.
Also, as much as I love the style that the characters are initially drawn in, you have no idea how hard it is to emulate their appearance when you're not used to drawing characters like that. You get what I mean? The more I look at this, the more i wonder if their hair is too long, their eyes are too big, their heads aren't structured right. You get the point; I'm worried they aren't recognizable.
Fun fact! Tetsuo's hair is made of grief, angst, and suffering. That shit's hard to draw. And color. It turned out okay, sure, but then I realize that i want to draw this character again. That hair is impossible for me, man.
All bitching and moaning aside, I really kind of like how this turned out. i'm fine with how the side views look, it looks pretty clean, and I got to practice with two awesome characters. I can't wait to get a copic set that isn't rented so I can do more pictures like this. 'Til then , this is my last copic drawing for a while, aside from scraps I have in my folders and an art trade for a friend.
Also, Ihave three... somewhat different versions of this. Those can be viewed on my tumblr, here: your-magic-white-rabbit.tumblr…
Also,I'm hoping to open up my paypal this weekend so I can officially do commissions for cash. I'll have two methods of payment available, but we'll talk about those later.
It's late, though. I have a lot of comments to get back to, but those will have to wait. Sorry, guys! I hope this will hold you over for the time being!
Now, go watch Akira. I mean it.
I've been wanting to watch this movie for a while, but I haven't gotten around to it yet... it looks really cool though.
I love your greyscale coloring, but I think that the red is a bit too orange. Also, I'm unfamiliar with the style of the characters in the movie, but i think the eyes need to be rotated a little bit on the x-axis. When you look at an eye from the side, you can almost see through the clear part to the nose (you actually can see straight through it on cats which is pretty darn freaky). Still, it looks good! Good luck with your copic collection. Ask for them for Christmas, if you celebrate it~ They're not too expensive individually, so people don't mind buying them much~
