I'm a graphic designer in Houston Texas, and have been working professionally for about 5 years now. I keep a small number of fanarts and fanfictions, which are almost exclusively Inuyasha oriented.
I'm also a casual cosplayer, where I've been dabbling in prop making since the beginning of 2011.

ah weird! It is just a standard commercial plastic, i'm surprised you had trouble locating a source in your country.
Do they have printing shops around you? Run into a printing shop - one that makes signs - and see if they have any scraps of "PVC Expanded Foam" board. Then its free! I hope this helps!

I use a material called Sintra / PVC foamboard. I have lots of tutorials around, if you want more info.
