Well, guess who was in the cinema yesterday? Yes. Me.
So. Let's talk Alien: Covenant Having a "normal", not hyped or oversimplified opinion is rare these days it seems. But to me it was an OK movie. Not good, but also not bad. It had it's problems, but there were enough elements to it that I found inspirational and fresh (really liked the atmosphere in the first half) - also awkward and strange to watch, but I happen to like that in movies. My personal biggest Problems with it was the CGI (which was "too fast and videogamy") and some stupid unprofessional behavior from the crew. (I kept saying to my husband: "Man, this company has some serious safety hazard problems!" during the movie.) Also a bit slow in the middle part (the pacing was kinda off it seems)...and writing problems, that had to happen because of this convoluted nonsensical franchise. The "twist" ending was more then just predictable and I feel like the Alien-Fan-service did the movie more harm then good (if only for the expectation the general movie-goer had) But I still like what they TRIED to do, focusing more on the artificial life/creation aspect instead of the "movie monster" xenomorph. Also, I love robots...so this movie was something i could enjoy greatly. Thanks to Mr. Fassbender.
So long story short: I like the idea behind it, but fanservice for alien Fanboys and standard hollywood filmmaking made it into a mediocre film. Also don't like the "videogamey" CGI and the pacing was a bit slow in the middle. Also predictable ending.
We're seeing it Wednesday but I've heard this review from lots of people. I do love robots too though. I think I'll enjoy it. Even though I'm a fan of the films, I'm not that hardcore into them. Great artwork!
I enjoyed the first half more than the second, I felt like the first half played as a horror movie...the second half as an over the top action fest. Overall I did enjoy it, just no where near as memorable as alien or aliens.
What fanservice? there is good and bad one, this one was bad one because Ridley is shitting on Alien lore,he retcon some stuff, origin was dumb,no longer a mystery around them and i feel like third act was rushed,Neomorphs would be enough in this movie, when Xenomorph arrived it was like "oh ok another alien creature",no impact at all.I agree movie was medicore.
That's exactly what I meant (yeah, it's bad fanservice) It looks like ridley scott didn't want to have "the" alien in these movies, but somehow they thought "hmm, people seem to want to see the alien, so let's shoehorn it in somehow" and it ruined both, the new movies and the alien lore :,) Oh well...I love the original Xenomorph HR Giger thought up and to me personally it's the only canon alien. Still kinda liked parts of Alien:Covenant though, but not as an Alien Movie. But even then it's a mediocre movie, as said...pacing problems. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm unsure how to express my feelings about Alien: Covenant, but for myself it didn't 'feel' like an Alien movie. It was disconnected from the xenomorph universe; disjointed... as though any space monster could be substituted in its stead. David was The Monster, and the xenomorphs mere pets for the occasional obligatory horror movie gore. To say the least, I was rather disappointed.
