!Major update tacked on the bottom!
Collecting other people's accounts and photos here... www.squidoo.com/Doujin-Overloa…
Writing this up now, cause I started and I won't otherwise. I am really tired - trying to finish uni homework for tomorrow on parents' computer...
I had fun. Wasn't as loud, more people actually came and looked at my stuff, still ended up really nervous at the beginning (Zeb flustered me XD She was the first person I'd talked to in two days) and I only had 3.5 hours sleep (I had to get up at six O_o SIX! My body clock thinks NINE is early!).
More awesome arts this year. Cheese-Demon was great to sit next to (and then he vanished for lunch and a Horde descended and I took more money for him than made for the whole con Maybe they were scared of him? ). And the girl past him who didn't give me her DA AND I MUST HAVE IT is scary tall. And I intend to stalk. Also he attracted cameras for some reason >.>
I only bought one thing, must try and track down artist. Oh wait, now, got a free bookmark, hopefully has DA on >.> Also got some nice freebies. Plus Scary Chibi keychain things which I will give to friends who will love and adore them (the chibi... *recoils in terror* Hah, I was very brave, considering the vast wave of chibi that coated the table on my left! 8) ) Meant to buy from a couple more people, but didn't get round to it/look carefully enough as I passed (until I thought back and went *DOH* ).
Also highly amused that someone wanted to buy the commission I'd just finished for a book cover, that I'd printed out at uni while scanning all my paintings and such at the last minute before going to set my stall up, and therefore was still in folder XD (It was just a printout from the computer). (This is not uploaded yet, but it will be. Giving the guy a chance to get his website running). All these scans are why I managed to upload a flood of new stuff yesterday evening
ALSO GOT A FREEBIE FROM ArkillianDragon. I will love and cherish your cheap computer printout of your awesome Sweeney Todd picture forever. or at least until i hunt you down and steal the original. (It has boobies).
Also utterly knackered. Had to go to work this morning. And have now to catch up on the crapload of assignments and preparation I didn't do last week. Also need to plan printing for Armageddon as I didn't HAVE any new printing for DO (the horror *kicks brother in the broken leg* *kicks parents who dared swan off for round-the-world-trip* )
But yes. Utterly more-awesome than last year. Also practiced drawing with my new copic and other black marker (which I like more, copics are okay I guess... ). Threw half away, made a few okay ones that I put out just to make my stall look more varied, and a couple I actually really like.
AAARGH. THERE WERE PEOPLE. AND NOT ENOUGH TIME TO TALK.
Which is creepy because I spent half of the con terrified people would talk to me
Didn't have any new printing since last year, (MY BROTHER. AAAARGH. Either I had no computer access or was utterly knackered from the caring and housework and shopping - and carrying home said shopping - and work and hospital visits). Plus I had major assignments and exams.
Didn't manage to enter the art contest D: (ah well. The entries are usually amazing and blow my trad. stuff away). Also hurt my back cause my bag was heavy (but fitted my a3 posters! - old laptop bag my dad passed on. i sold some of the Suddenly ones THE BLOOD ATTRACTS PEOPLE) and carrying ArkillianDragon's stuff to her car (didn't realise until today, when I have trouble moving when I stand up).
Also met some lovely people - a guy from the 3D whatever studios who knew what ArtRage was and two girls who spent about half an hour 'deciding' between my little prints 9well. one did The other was patient and occasionally bought a random one).
Want to update this with photos and names of people I saw, but soooo tired. Visit the 2010 blog links www.squidoo.com/Doujin-Overloa… to find more ^_^
Other thoughts and things. I reallly like going to cons - when people are interested and looking at my stuff (and when I can watch the people being amusing at the stalls next to me; like the hordes of cameras attracted to Cheese-Demon's cosplay (he had to keep turning the screw to stop his brain going rusty ) and the very cheerful pair on my left whose table was literally covered with a wide and very colourful variety of little drawings and goodies (and made a lot of people very happy looking through it). I also was rife with jealousy and inferiority whenever I glanced to my right at ArkillianDragon's and The-Nai's and Cheese-Demon's sketches I only really, really care about being better with ArtRage than a sketchpad when sitting on my stall
I'm somewhat annoyed with myself, as I meant to go look and probably buy from capyBAKA, The-Nai and ArkillianDragon, but I didn't >.< Also, the speed at which people ran off with Cheese-Demon's posters has convinced me to do more fanart (a resolution that will last maybe another two days - although the rare but regular Buffy fanart is a project I'd like to continue with, until I have enough for a set or book of some kind.)
I had some lovely visitors - some were friendly and talked, and some were interested in my art, which was awesome. I'm still kicking myself over not being able to pin chrisdog203 - who's art I know recognise, having revisited
And so very happy over 1) moving to a flat on the train line, so I can easily get into the city with all my gear (unlike last year, when ArkillianDragon had to save me from the evil lack of transport) and 2) my dad's laptop bag FITS ALL MY ART (it's a huge briefcase thing) INCLUDING THE A3 POSTERS I TOOK so i didn't need to worry about a giant folder.
I will definitely say that doing more than one con helps - the only true feedback is watching people at your stall, so every 'new' person is guessing, as well as gambling with their printing money.
I found that people LOVED the little prints I sold, partly because they were affordable and probably because they had no worries about carrying them (and maybe the 'look it is small and perfect!' factor that kicks in when people view tiny little things), so most bought more than one, and they liked the a4's (usually the ones I was selling cheap because I didn't like how they printed!) and while they loved the big posters, they were less likely to buy them cause they cost more. (However at Arm. there were more people willing to pay more for the 'good' quality printing - I dropped my prices for DO again).
I'd like to do key-chains and bookmarks, but I know that *I* wouldn't be hugely interested in buying a lot of them, also I'm still finding a place that would laminate them cheaply enough to bother without having to sacrifice the quality. I wish I knew a way to do buttons for less than $4 each >.<
I'd be more willing to risk bringing in the more unusual/expensive items (to make - and therefore to sell) as DO grows, as more people - and therefore a higher percentage with more money - attend, and I suspect that others will do the same. I'd love to do an artbook, but quail in terror before any kind of comic - but I'd have to be really sure I got it right (I might make a themed one - e.g. Buffy fanart when i have more ) ... I thoroughly messed up with the sketchbook I did the first year (both by distracting people with the Big Shiny posters and by it just not looking very good) so I'm wary of creating another one too soon. Also, so much time!
I think this paragraph should also start with 'I'.
But... I notice people do a lot of art specifically for the con in a last minute panic. (I don't, I just paint constantly and pull out the pictures I want to use each time, which is why I noticed it, and it baffles me a bit when people ask/wonder if I/they will have enough to sell But I think I started trying to sell stuff my later in my painting 'career' so to speak). I was wondering if that affects what ends up being on offer? There's deadlines to consider, for a start - keychains and bookmarks can usually be made right up until the day), and if you... or I, at least, am painting FOR something, you might get into a rut of types that you think will work, or be less willing/able to experiment. The long-running artists (not necessarily sales-wise) usually have a lot more variety and tend to stand out.
Just to let you know (as I neglected to mention DO) that I will be attending Armageddon in October. I'll be sharing a stall with ArkillianDragon and I think one other person
I've been getting all my stuff ready - I have about 70 different pictures lined up and ready to print, I just have to decide if that's too many! (most will be tiny) Also my AWESOME stickers arrived from <a href="flynnthecat.redbubble.com>RedBubble! (they are created from the t-shirt images, and die-cut, so look especially fantastic. And are CHEAP enough to sell on without charging the earth) AND I AM WEARING MY OWN T-SHIRT . Sadly, I'd have to sell them for $40 to be worth importing, but I've got a couple of spares now (print tests) so I'll see what happens. (I love having paypal money from Squidoo )
Also, most of you may have seen this in your inboxes, but I'm pleased as punch about it - a real proper commission that I really enjoyed doing
Aaaand went on a photoshoot of Bria-Silivren (she wanted some different angles of her costumes) and these are the first few from that (a couple more I'll upload - i TOOK nearly 200, be grateful I'm being selective )
And am trying to thank all the people who fav'd by handing out llamas - maybe THIS way I'll get through the 4000+ in my faves folder.
And I have to visit and thank the 100+ new watchers from the last few mths, aaaand I'd half emptied my deviations down to 3000.
And I am about to be hit by the next semester's wave of assignments
