Do I need an Umbrella? by FlyingHyrax Do I need an Umbrella? by FlyingHyrax

"Do I need an Umbrella?"

A Rainmeter weather skin (version 2.0)

Enter your ZIP code, and the skin will tell you if you need to carry an umbrella. For those who want a bare essentials forecast. :) No code magic here; this skin just parses the info from the excellent website doineedanumbrellaDOTcom: [link]

:bulletred: US ONLY :bulletred:
Sorry, the website works with US ZIP codes only. :(

Instructions:
:bulletblue: Right-click on the skin and use the context menu entries to switch between light and dark versions, and between left and right orientations.
:bulletblue: Click the location text to enter your ZIP code. (You can also try city names like on the website, but ZIP codes seem more sure-fire.)
:bulletblue: Mouseover "YES" or "NO" to see a tooltip with some additional weather information.
:bulletblue: If for any reason the context menu options, clicking the location, etc. are not working, all those options can be changed manually in the [Variables] section of the skin file

Credits:
:bulletgreen: Data courtesy of DoINeedAnUmbrella [link]
:bulletgreen: Umbrella Icon is from the Token icon set by brsev [link]

Changelog:
(Version 2 | 25 January 2013)
:bulletpurple: Updated the skin to work with the new version of doineedanumbrella.com
:bulletpurple: Added an option to change the skin to be right-justified
:bulletpurple: Appearance options use the new ContextTitle/ContextAction feature from Rainmeter 2.4
:bulletpurple: Default font is now Corbel, but the font can be changes in the [Variables] section of the skin file

Is there a way to configure this skin to show/hide another skin based on the yes/no value? I'm pretty new to this and I would like to configure the skin to show a rain skin when the rain value is "yes"

Just an update as it's been a while since the last update. The website now seems to support a number of world cities if you enter their name "Sydney" rather than a postcode.

Sydney = Sydney, AU
Toronto = Toronto, CA
London = London, UK
Madrid = Madrid, SP

I can confirm that this works in the Widget!

Hello again and another sorry, I also customize this skin, in two variants, to use weather.com's RSS and local rhmz.rs' feed. It looks like this:

No problem, nice variations!  I don't have much time to work on these skins anymore so it's cool to see someone else tweaking and customizing them. :thumbsup:

I took a look at the website and it would be super easy to write a skin for that. The only disadvantage I see is that after you search for a location, the website doesn't return the name of the location that they matched your search to - so for instance you might search for "Athens," and the website might return a result for Athens Georgia or Athens Greece, and you wouldn't be able to tell which it was.
Otherwise, super simple.
I am very busy with schoolwork right now but I ought to be able to whip something up over holiday break.
Thanks for the suggestion!

glad to know its a easy code to write. about the location, i think people would just have to search for the exact code of the location, and it would be it.

Well hope you do good with your school work and hopefully we we'll have a new skin soon

Looks like an error on their (doineedanumbrella.com) end; it's giving me the same problem: "WXPRAW" instead of location. Hopefully it's temporary.

In the mean time, you can get rid of this text in the skin by doing the following:
- Right click and "edit skin"
- Delete the entire [Location] meter section
- Change the position values in the [YN] meter section to X=64 Y=5
- Save and refresh

As much as I would like to make that happen, it's just not currently possible. :(
The US only limit is due to the website used by the skin, not the skin itself - so either the website has to update to include international weather (which is outside of my control) or I would need to figure out a data source and try to replicate what the website was doing (which I have no idea how to do).

There is this: [link]
Has worldwide coverage (if you live near an airport.)
Maybe I'll make a skin for that website too, if I can find a jacket icon I like. ;)

I don't know... maybe. I'm not even sure if doineedaJacket and doineedanUmbrella are actually related or not. :P

There are some complications with doineedaJacket, Rainmeter-wise... it has personalization settings (to set what temperatures you need a jacket at, etc.) and you have to use airport codes... so I'm not sure how it would work out. It's a possibility though.

awww, too bad, i hope that you can solve those issues; I don't really know about the programming stuff in rainmeter, but is any possibility for the people to set the temperature in which they could need a jacket?

After some more thought, I might try just doing it "manually" - instead of downloading the info from the website, I would only download the current temperature (from, say, Yahoo Weather) and do all the calculations myself in the skin. By doing all the math in the skin, it would be possible to let users set options without messing with the website at all.

I've been busy recently, so all this is purely theoretical, of course. ;) Haven't had time to actually try it...

Actually, useless for about 95.5%, according to the CIA World Factbook's stats. ;)

However, the fact that something doesn't work for everyone based on geography is no reason not to make it available. That's like complaining that an app for the New York City subway system doesn't work in London. I liked the web service, I made a skin for it, I shared it in case others might like it - that's it. :)
