Plot: Abby, Rosita and Elmo meet Elmo's new friend Polly, and learn about different families.
Murray: I'm Murray, and I'm looking for the word on the street! What's the word on the street??
Murray: What does family mean?
Young boy in pink shirt: Family is, um, your parents and maybe your brother or sister.
Murray: Can pets be your family?
Adult woman in wheelchair with guide dog: (laughs) oh of course! And guide dogs who help people out too!
Murray: Who is in your family?
Teenage boy in dress shirt: Me, my ma, and my sister, even though she doesn't live with us.
Murray: Where is somewhere you might see a family?
Young girl in green hat: Soooo totally in there house!
Women with freckles holding a baby: At the park, on a picnic!
Young woman in overalls: Anywhere!
Murray: oh good answer!
Murray: Keep listening for the word Family today on Sesame Street! It's the word on the street!
Elmo stood at the front door of his house. His mommy helped him put on his backpack.
"You have your water bottle?"
"Check!" Said Elmo.
"And a snack?" Asked Elmo's daddy.
"And enough to share with your new friend?"
"Yes Daddy!" Answered Elmo. Elmo turned and saw you. "Oh hi! Welcome to Sesame Street!"
"Elmo's going on a playdate with his new friend, Polly," said Elmo's daddy, "why don't you go with him?"
Elmo listened to your answer.
"Oh boy!" Said Elmo, "they want to come! Haha, Yaaaay! Oh, Elmo's so excited, he's going to meet Polly's mommy and daddy for the first time!"
You and Elmo walked out door, following the instructions Elmo had been given on how to get to Polly's house. As you walked, you passed the fairy garden, where Abby was sitting, poking the ground with a stick.
"Oh hi Abby!"
"Hi Elmo! Where are you going?"
"Oh, we're going to Elmo's new friend's house, Polly, to meet her family! What are you doing, Abby?"
"Oh, not much Elmo," said Abby, "My mommy says I don't have to be home for another hour, but I'm all finished in the garden. Oh, hey can I go with you guys?"
"Oh, of course Abby!," said Elmo, "Let's hurry!"
As the three of you walk, Elmo ponders about the playdate.
"Boy, Elmo sure wonders what Polly's mommy and daddy are like."
"Oh, me too," said Abby, "I wonder if she has any brothers or sisters?"
Almost there, they came across Rosita.
"Hola, who has hermanos and hermanas? That's Spanish for brothers and sisters!"
"Oh, Hi Rosita. Elmo and his friends are just going to meet his new friend Polly, and her family!"
"Ooh, familia! May I come?"
"Yeah, let's go!" Said Abby. They walked up to a door and knocked.
"This is it!" said Elmo.
A very tall man with blonde hair and yellow felt/skin answered the door.
"Oh hey! You must be Elmo, Polly told me about you! Come in! And who are these others?"
"These are Elmo's friends! Say hi everybody!"
"Hola!" Said Rosita.
"Hi!" Said Abby.
"Oh, and you must be Polly's daddy!" Said Elmo, as he lead them in.
In the kitchen, Polly, a young pink girl with long blonde braids sat at the table drawing flowers in crayon. Next to her, a man with pink skin with darker hair and a mustache sat too.
Polly smiled and set down her drawing. She walked to Elmo and the others and hugged them.
"I'm glad you guys made it," she said. "This is my papa," she said, pointing to the mustached man.
"Oh, but Elmo already met your dad!" Said Elmo, giggling. "It's him!"
"Well, that is one of them," said Polly, "But I have two!"
"Two dads?" Asked Elmo, looking confused, "Elmo never heard of that. Elmo thought every family was a mommy, a daddy, and the kids all living together in their house?"
"But Elmo," said Abby, "You've been to my house before, remember? My family is just a mommy and me, because my parents are divorced. And when I'm at my daddy's house, it's just him and me."
"Oh yeah!" said Elmo, "Elmo remembers that!"
"Divorced?" Said Polly.
"That means my parents aren't married anymore," said Abby. "But they still love me and are my family."
"Elmo never knew there were different ways to be a family!"
"Si, si!" Said Rosita, "I used to think that all families spoke only Spanish, but now I know some speak English, or both, or other languages too!"
"Susan and Gordan adopted a baby! Oh, and Gina did too!" said Elmo, "That means the baby didn't have a mommy or daddy, so someone else became there's!"
"Me and my sister and brother are adopted too!" Said Polly.
"Oh, wow!" Said Rosita, "And Oscar the grouch, he's all grown up, his family lives farther, but he lives with his pets too! They're like his family as well!"
"Oh!" Said Abby, "And his pet worm, Slimy? He has a sister, even worms have family!"
"Wow," said Polly, "there are so many kinds of families here on Sesame Street! I'm so glad we moved here!"
"Si!" Said Rosita, "Polly's daddies? Is it ok if Polly comes with us to meet all the different kinds of families here on Sesame Street?"
"Of course," said one of Polly's dad's, "just make sure Polly's back in time for dinner with ours!"
So you, Elmo, Rosita, Zoe and Polly walked outside onto Sesame Street.
You came across Big Bird. Big Bird was reading a piece of paper, and holding a new doll.
"Hi Big Bird!" Said Elmo, "Elmo was wondering, what is Big Bird's family like?"
"Well," said Big Bird, "I came to Sesame Street when I was just an egg! And it was just me, no mommy or daddy."
"Wow, really?" Asked Abby.
"Yeah, but all of Sesame Street helps to take care of me, and they're like my family!"
"Wow!" Said Rosita, "That's so cool! Hey, what is that doll you have?"
Big Bird turned around the piece of paper. "See?"
Abby read the letter: "Dear Big Bird, I saw this doll in the store and thought of you. I hope you'll like it. Love, Granny Bird."
"Oh, wow!" Said Elmo, "Big Bird has a granny bird too?"
"Yeah!" Said Big Bird. "I have family related to me, and I have the family that takes care of me!"
"Wow, that is a lot of family," Said Polly, "I didn't know there could be so much family!"
"Of course!" Said Big Bird.
"Oh, Elmo wants to find more families!"
Abby wondered, "But where else can we find families?"
Rosita looked up as she saw a twiddlebug fly by. The twiddlebug landed on Ernie's windowsill. Some other twiddlebugs came up to him.
"Daddy!" Said a small Twiddlebug.
"Ohhhh! I believe I see one!" Said Rosita.
Elmo looked all around. "Elmo doesn't see anyone."
"Yeah, it must be a really small family." Said Polly.
"Si, si!" Said Rosita, pointing, "it is a small family!"
Everyone took a closer look at the windowsill.
"Oh, wow!" Said Elmo, laughing.
"There's a tiny little family living right here!" Said Abby, "and they have wings, just like my family!"
"Hi!" Said the momma Twiddlebug.
"Hola!" Said Rosita. "I never saw a family so small!"
"Hi!" Said the dad Twiddlebug, "I never saw a family so big!"
"We're not a family, we're a bunch of friends!" Said Elmo.
"Your friends can be like a family!" Said the father Twiddlebug.
"We are like a family!" Said Rosita.
"A family of friends!" Said Abby.
"There's one more Family Elmo wonders about," said Elmo, "yours!"
Everyone listened as you told about your family.
"So so many ways to be a family!" Said Rosita.
Elmo: Oh hi! Elmo and his friend Mr. John Linnel are here to tell you all about the word "Family"!
Linnel: That's right Elmo!
Elmo: (whispers) Uh, Mr John? What does "family" mean again?
Linnel: Your Family is who you live with! And it can also be the people who are related to you!

Linnel: Yes way! I hear someone coming now! It might be him!
A humanoid Muppet walks towards them
Elmo: Is that Mr John's family?
The humonoid Muppet walks past them.
Linnel: No, that wasn't him. Usually, your family knows me. My family will say hi to me when he sees me.
A humanoid Muppet with a distinctively different hairdo and outfit walks by.
Humonoid Muppet: Hi John!
Elmo: is that him?
Linnel: Hi, Marty.
Linnel turns to Elmo as the humonoid Muppet walks past
Linnel: No, I know him, but he's not my family. Usually, but not always ,your family looks like you too.
An Muppet octopus with Linnel's skintone, glasses, hair and shirt walks up to them.
Elmo makes a confused face.
Elmo (to audience): Elmo doesn't think that-
Linnel: Hi Johnny!
Octopus: Hi John!
Elmo(confused): That's Mr John's family?
Linnel: of course, don't we look alike?
Elmo looks at them.
Elmo: Oh! Now Elmo sees it!
All three hug and turn to the camera.
All three: Family!
