:damphyr:  [NOTE] It seems for every known artist on Deviantart, there are hundreds that are overlooked, many that are exceptionally talented. Some of them will be featured below; please, if you have the time check out their galleries and support them! :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

:pointr: Hundreds of animals today are facing extinction: their homes are destroyed, they are slaughtered for their body parts or fur, and their food sources are lessening.

:pointr: One way to help these animals is by letting people know how bad the situation is and try to encourage people to support various groups trying to help out endangered animals. I decided to write a series of articles featuring some wonderful artists and their photographs or drawings of certain animals, some basic information on the condition of said animal in the wild, as well as some groups/clubs in case you want to get involved. Enjoy!

//Status levels (from worst to best)://
Extinct in wild, Critical risk, Endangered, Vulnerable, Lower Risk, Stable

:target: Featured: Raptors

*This is not the complete list of endangered raptors, just a sampling. *

------------------------------------------------------

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)

:postit: Fast facts: - can reach up to 200 mph (322 kilometers per hour) when diving

- when a bald eagle loses a feather on one wing, it will lose a matching one on the other: that way it doesn’t lose it’s balance

- females are always larger than the males

- most large birds of prey use their voices only during breeding season, but the bald eagle uses it year-round

Status: :bulletyellow: Vulnerable :bulletyellow:
Due to: Loss of habitat, shooting, and DDT poisoning (in the past).

:postit: Fast facts: - in 1982, the population consisted of less than 25 individuals

- do not have vocal chords

- can take up to a week for a chick to break out of its shell

- do not have talons, only have blunt claws

Status: :bulletred: Critical Risk :bulletred:
Due to: Loss of habitat, hunting, pesticide residue, lead poisoning, and collisions with power lines.

:postit: Fast facts: - hind talons can get up to the size of grizzly bear claws and its feet can grow to the size of a man’s hands

- one of the largest and most powerful eagles

- its wingspan can be around 7 feet long

Status: :bulletgreen: Lower Risk :bulletgreen:
Due to: Hunting and loss of habitat due to logging and rainforest depletion.

- their nests are very large and can consist of 400 or more large branches

- more aggressive and powerful than its closest relatives: the Bald Eagle and the White-tailed Sea-eagle

Status: :bulletyellow: Vulnerable :bulletyellow:
Due to: Loss of habitat, poisoning of their food source (fish).

Very informative article and the artworks are great too. I just hope The Philippine Eagle is also included in you list as it is one of the most critically endangered raptors to date.

Here's a link about this majestic eagle [link]

Glad you liked the article! ^^ I wanted to add the Phillippine Eagle (I remember seeing it on the list of endangered raptors), but I think the only reason I didn't add it was because of the lack of images on deviantart. Sadly, that kind of limits me on the animals I'd like to feature...

Nice. I like how you have those quick facts. Are Osprey endangered? They're one of my favorite brids of prey, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

As for the osprey, they are not on the endangered species list (so they are not endangered or threatened), though they are more common in some areas than others...

Here's the official Endangered Species list: [link]

I took a load of pictures of Buzzards today... there were five of them fighting/mating or something...

And can I disagree with your Bald Eagle fact... as you quoted the speed to be faster than the fastest bird in the world (my fave animal) falco peregrinus, the peregrine falcon. (followed by the spine tailed swift and the wood pigeon - the Peregrines favourite prey).

Wow, you are lucky. ^^ That's pretty cool :D

And thanks for pointing that out! I thought there was something a little strange about that (since I know about peregrine falcons... they are some of my favorite birds :aww:).

I got my information from here (generally it's the easiest to follow): [link]

I assumed since they had said it, it was correct, but I guess everyone makes mistakes. ^^

Like I said before, though... I don't think I can edit news articles once they are submitted, or I would but a different fact. >.<

We get loads of Buzzards in the UK (and I think they are different birds to the US ones)... I'll post the shots if they develop well.

I would love to find a peregrine in the wild to shoot... maybe sometime I'll have the money to invest in fast enough lenses to pan with fast birds...

Thanks for featuring my work!!! It's good to get my stuff seen in other places on DA! By the way, you do have a picture that was drawn digitally posted under a photography drawing. It's the one of the harpy eagle which is close-up with a dark background. :) It does look like a photo but it is in fact a really great digital painting.
