desdemona is a really strange case on many accounts.

celestia is sort of known for having more than a few flings with mortal ponies but never really making anything serious out of them due to her immortality; it's correctly presumed by many that she's too old to be making those kinds of emotional connections to begin with. celestia also doesn't have children-- or so everyone believes.

per canon, when tirek and scorpan arrived in equestria and met the princesses, scorpan was pretty open to the idea of friendship, while his brother was initially wary of it, thinking he would be betrayed once the ponies got on his good side. celestia, young and full of maybe a little too much hope, made it her own personal duty to make tirek feel welcome and the two ended up on many a private outing together. tirek eventually became more comfortable among ponies and stayed with scorpan and the princesses, eventually considering them friends.

celestia and tirek probably had real feelings for one another at some point, but tirek's paranoia and unfortunate desire for power and control over anything else caused the two to split not long after they met. tirek would often leave at night for hours at a time and drain ponies of their magic and would vehemently deny doing it to anyone, despite him being the only being in equestria who could do that.

it was very obviously a messy split. tirek was confronted about his lies and double-dealing, the princesses and scorpan telling him he couldn't lie to his friends and lover about the harm he was causing. this caused tirek to snap and declare that he was being betrayed, despite the others only wanting to help him, and a battle where he ultimately lost resulted in him being locked in tartarus for thousands of years. celestia discovered she was pregnant not long after, and reluctantly decided it was best for everyone involved to keep the child a secret. tirek would definitely attempt to coerce her to his side if he found out, and celestia's kindness to tirek would not be matched by her subjects when it came to a child who inherited looks and powers from a being that recently wreaked havoc on canterlot.

until she was old enough to live on her own, desdemona was raised in near-isolation. her mother, aunt, and a hoof-ful of butlers, maids, nurses, and one wing of the castle were all she ever knew in her true form. she would often magically disguise herself as a pony and walk among canterlot, but knew for her own sake that going much further was a bad idea. her mother and aunt love her so, so much. celestia spent more time raising her than she really should have, considering she rules a nation and could only be with her daughter in relative secrecy. everyone involved knew this was no way to live, though, and were more than encouraging when desdemona reached adulthood and expressed feelings of wanting to leave and see the world.

desdemona writes scrolls to her mother and aunt often. she's traversing the world, currently; equestria is kinder to non-pony creatures than it once was and she can usually get away with existing as she is, but she holds a pretty deep sadness in her heart because of her estrangement from her family, especially her father, who she's never met.

she can drain magic from others like tirek but at a smaller scale, and can perform simple spells like levitation and disguising herself. des is currently shacking up in the frozen north near the crystal empire, where she might encounter a certain green unicorn looking for answers...
