I'm also very sad that the project got canceled as I learned a lot from working on it back when I was still in high school. I left after the concerting phase was over but from what I understand there were not enough people and/or resources to create what they promised at that point.
if I was offered a job like that today I wouldn't take it because I now know the scale of developing a game, even just a simple one.
