On KamehaCon 2019

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 23, 2019, 3:29 PM
I don't like to make decisions that hurt my good time but in the end I must look out for my own safety and wellbeing. I regret to inform everyone that I will not be attending KamehaCon this year. I am not angry with the con owner, I have a friend who knows him and has told me the full story and I still deeply love KamehaCon and what it represents. I cannot go however, because with Vic's attendance there will be tension, there will be drama, overzealous fans will cause unwanted trouble for those who do not agree with them and for those who just want to go to the con for a good time. Yes, I'm angry that Vic is going, but if his fanbase was not so toxic, I would still go and just avoid his booth. Sadly it's not that simple. I have some wonderful friends who are vic fans but over the past month, I have received harassment, threats of violence, and even death threats from aggressive Vic fans. This toxicity will carry over to the con due to his presence and I cannot place myself in an environment where I do not feel safe. I instead will be meeting up with a group of friends and Vas who have decided to bail as well and enjoy a special time together on con day without hate or drama. I will be attending conventions this year. I will do Fan Expo in may and AX in july. I would love nothing more than to go to KamehaCon but the timing is just not in good taste. I cannot and will not go somewhere that my gut tells me will be a war zone and it's sad that the con owner was bullied into allowing Vic to return by powerful alt right men. I have been attacked for expressing my discomfort in attending the con and I was even told to kill myself. I went to sleep last night terrified of what tomorrow would bring after I tweeted my thoughts and when I woke up, the abusive and threatening comments left me sobbing in my room for three hours and vomiting in my trash can. I am doing much better after some long talks with friends but I'm still very shaken up by this. I just cannot attend an event in person where the abuse I've been experiencing online will carry over into real life. I have received extensive support from friends, fans of my content, and even some voice actors(got a fun tweet from Sean on our mutual love for the band Rush). One of these voice actors has even reached out to me privately to express his support. The kindness from my supporters makes me tear up. I love all of you who have come to enjoy and support me and I hope to attend KamehaCon in the future when things dial down. I consider you all my cyber family and let's all get better together.

KamehaCon Stories

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 5, 2019, 10:31 AM
So i'll be at KamehaCon all three days and that got me telling people about the single best story from last year so I'm just going to share it here. After the Vegeta panel, my friend Kim called me and told me to meet her down at floor three of the convention center to wait for Ryo and so I agree and head in there. I had no idea who had a booth in room 301 where Kim was. So she and I are talking and she's showing me her Beerus cosplay. Then all the sudden she gets this look on her face and she's absolutely stunned. She goes "Sean Schemmel is right behind you..." And I'm like "Nooooo" and she's pointing behind me and I'm like "Ok fine I'll turn around because I know Sean isn't really behind me OH MY GOD!" He was standing right behind me and I just about died inside. He took a selfie with me and we had a nice talk about non DBZ related stuff. That guy was awesome! and by the way, Ryo Horikawa briefly helped me study for my japanese final by rehearsing my oral dialogue with me and I ended up getting an A on that final  and a B in the class courtesy of Vegeta's original voice actor, that in itself is pretty epic! Had I not briefly studied with him, I would have probably done crappy on that final and got a C in the class. This is why I love Vegeta, this right here!

And then there's this KamehaCon story. I was waiting in Chris's line which took a total of three hours, and I came prepared with my Japanese final exam study stuff so I pretty much sat on the floor studying while waiting to meet Funimation Vegeta. About an hour in, I'm on the word(yes I'm not kidding, it was on my final...please don't kill me for this)Kawaii Desu and this really handsome guy walks up to me and asks me where the nearest stairwell is. I show him to one hidden in a corner and he thanks me and then just takes off. I'm like...what just happened? And then a horde of girls just plows in to my area and one of them says "Which way did he go?" and a guest says "Thataway" Pewwwwww....the girls take off to the stairwell. I ask someone near me what this was and she goes "That was Eric Vale you were talking to" and I'm like..."what?"

Have an awesome week, you all are awesome

Why You Should Not Support PETA

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 2, 2019, 9:34 AM
I've made a lot of anti PETA statements on my blog but I'm going to really go into detail as to why those who really care about the welfare of our domesticated animals and the rights of wild ones, should fight to end the PETA  organization for good.

Gate movements. We all know them. They are movements that are out to destroy a certain facet of culture for a political or malicious cause. But what about PetGate? this is a hypothetical term that I came up with to describe PETA's very philosophy. While all the documented Gate movements have been to further a republican agenda, PETA's ideology aims to hurt people of all political sides. PETA only cares about wild animals, period! They don't care about wild animals in captivity, they'd rather those animals die off as they are a product influenced by people. They don't care about domesticated animals, they'd rather kill them off themselves and end the breeding of our dogs and cats as they are definitely a product of man. PETA ESPECIALLY does not care about you. PETA could care less about human rights. The organization has been many things over the years. From posting homophobic, racist, ableist and even sexist campaigns over it's lifetime, it is clear that a human life is the last thing PETA would ever bat an eye at. You see, in order to make a difference for animakind, one must first make a difference for humankind. What if I told you that the shock device you see Broly wear in the latest DBZ film is actually a reality for a select group of unfortunate children? There is a school out on the east coast that has caregivers, teachers, and parents hook their children up to shock collars and the guardians of those children carry around a remote device in a fanny pack that is used to shock the child into submission when the child does not preform a wanted task or acts out in a way that the school deems inappropriate. Keep in mind that almost all of these abused children are autistic. This is real. Children are suffering every day there at the hands of these martyr parents and you have a situation where young children have burn scars on their necks from these shock collars that they will carry with them for the rest of their life as a reminder that they are different and therefor must be disciplined. Yet PETA would not care about the rights of these children suffering at Judge Rotenberg Center.
What about the many millions of women who are beaten and abused by their male counterparts? What about the people out there dying of hunger and lack clean water? What about the unjust laws in place that hinder minority groups nationwide? What about the homophobic churches and the pastors that support abusive conversion therapy? What about police brutality? What about racism and racial profiling? What about sexual harassment allegations? What about sexual abuse? What about respect for those who have passed away tragically or peacefully? What about people?
PETA does not, has not, and will never care about human rights. PETA also does not care about animal welfare and the rights of wild animals in captivity. PETA only cares about wild animals in the wild and that is the narrow scope of their view. PETA kills 95% of the animals they take in. Their members have been known to steal pets off porches and even poison dogs at shows. PETA does not care if captive breeding helps preserve a species. Their hypocrisy has aroused the resistance of people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. They are universally hated by republicans and democrats alike. PETA cannot claim to be an animal rights organization when they in fact do not care about the majority of living things on the planet. It is utterly deplorable for PETA to even say they care about animals because reality is, they don't. If you want to do good for animals, you have to do good for people and domesticated/captive animals too.
What can we do for animals? We should have laws in place against the private ownership of wild animals. Wild animals should only be bred for captive preservation programs and managed by reputable facilities. We should have better laws in place for the welfare of our domesticated animals and promote reputable breeding of them rather than ending breeding all together. We should limit hunting to something that should be done out of necessity rather than for trophies. If you kill the animal, eat it. We should have better protection for animals that are highly sought after by poachers. We should end kill shelters and only euthanize when an animal is truly suffering. We should be allowed to coexist with animals in a positive way.
Steve Irwin may have done some risky things, but what he did for the preservation of wild species outweighs his thrill seeking. PETA chose to mock and disrespect a human life simply because he wanted to coexist with animals. If that isn't hate speech, i don't know what is.

Have an excellent weekend, wishing you all the best

What AnimeGate Means For Future Conventions

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 25, 2019, 2:21 PM
A group of aggressive alt right you tubers calling themselves AnimeGate has surfaced out of the ashes of fallen voice actor Vic Mignogna's career. While it's obvious that most of their work is clickbait, that does not mean that their videos are not doing any harm. AnimeGate is not just a few you tubers, but rather, it is a network of alt right conspirators that want to destroy the dubbing industry due to the left leaning politics of most of the actors. These people know they can't change the politics of the film industry, so they instead are going after the dub industry and are using Mignogna as their conservative "martyr". The thing is, it's not just about Mignogna anymore, this movement have evolved into a political enemy of the left and vise versa.  The three leaders of AnimeGate are conservative commentators YellowFlash2, Perfection, and Super Saiyan Paul. What really makes their videos dangerous is the out of context photos they compile into them So what does this mean for future cons?

Because of these you tubers and their massive fanbase, you can't just be casual at cons anymore. Gone are the days when a simple handshake or hug meant that you showed someone a mutual sign of respect. People attending conventions cannot interact with one another the way they used to, not out of fear of repeating Mignogna's errors with consent, but out of fear of being in the next out of context photograph on an AnimeGate channel. Voice actress Monica Rial states that she is not changing the way she interacts with fans at conventions but I fear for her as being a primary target of AnimeGate, the next time she hugs a fan or poses for a photograph, an AnimeGate spy could snap an unwanted and out of context photograph to send to a youtuber. Even just regular attendees should watch their backs at cons. I know I'll have to be as inconspicuous as I can at KamehaCon when interacting with people as I'm an AnimeGate target due to my recent posts on the heresy of YellowFlash2's rhetoric. Conventions cannot tell a regular guest from an AnimeGate spy and that's what makes them dangerous. There have already been accounts of AnimeGate spys calling anonymous swattings on the opposition and sending death threats to targets. I've received some death threats from them myself and have screenshot the tweets and reported them but myself and other AnimeGate targets just don't feel safe anymore. Whatever side of the Vic movement you are on, stay far away from AnimeGate. Vic fans and Vic opposers, be smart and be safe at cons. Much love to both sides

-FNP

Tips to stay off the AnimeGate radar at cons

1. If you are wanting to get a hug from a con guest, do a side hug
2. Refrain from any kissing in the public eye at cons, save it for private
3. If you see suspicious behavior or signs of harassment, report it
4. If you see someone taking photographs of con guests in a secretive manner, they may be an AnimeGate spy, report them
5. Work towards a neutral truce between Vic fans and Vic opposers in order to combat the AnimeGate cult

Top 5 Worst Fandom Controversies

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 24, 2019, 7:20 AM
Fandom is meant to be fun. But there are those moments that have completely rocked the very fabric of fandom in a negative way. As with anything, fandom isn't perfect. Here are the top 5 biggest controversies in fandom culture

5. Ship War II
Avatar is a fandom unfortunately known for its toxic shipper community but things really kicked off after the finale of LoK when Korrasami was confirmed to be canon. Both sides took to the forums to express their toxicity when one fan posted a Makorra support post that is still being heavily memed today. With insults, harassment and even threats coming from both sides, Ship War II went down in history as the most divisive ship war to date.

4. Untimely Death
When it comes to shows that generate controversy, Voltron is defiantly high up on that list. Nothing outraged fans more though than the finale in which the beloved Allura is killed off. Many saw this as unnecessary and poorly handled leading to a massive number of fans to boycott the show or simply only watch the earlier seasons. Allure was a well liked and strong female character in a primarily male dominant show which is why many felt that her death sent a regressive any woman message to viewers.

3. Not My Luke
Luke Skywalker is a beloved character and iconic for most so it's no surprise that many were upset with how he was portrayed in episode 8. Gone was the idealistic wide eyed farm boy, he's instead a pessimistic nomadic hermit living on a lonely island while the first order takes control of the galaxy. People complained that the Luke they once knew did not exist anymore and were even more outraged by how his death was handled. This has lead to people comparing episode 8 to the hideous prequels and has left a huge rift in the star wars community.

2.GamerGate
Now things get more serious. After more feminist journalists started to speak out about the lack of proper female representation in the gaming community, a group of conservatives formed a movement known as gamergate and attempted to squash any progress that was to come out of the growing feminism in games. Outraged, these conservatives resorted to sexism, racism, homophobia, and even death threats. It got so dangerous that many of the outspoken feminists had to travel with law enforcement to ensure their safety. The gamergate movement operated on the philosophy of "if I can't have my way, then games should die altogether" which lead to one of the most dangerous controversies in fandom history. Although it has mostly dissipated, the scars left by gamergate still remain and have even contributed to the most dangerous controversy in fandom history...and it's coming up next.

1. AnimeGate
It all began with a defensive tweet from voice actor Vic Mignogna after a series of twitter threads began to surface, documenting the actor's seedy history with fans. At first it was a simple dispute between fans of the actor and victims of his abuse at conventions that was to be eventually swept under the rug. That all changed when model Jessica Pridemore, actresses Jamie Marchi and Monica Rial, and actor Neil Kaplan publicly declared that there was a lot more to Vic behind the scenes than people had originally thought. After a private investigation, Mignogna was fired from his work and things quickly turned into a left vs right debate. A group of conservative you tubers has aggressively taken Mignogna's side and started an array of conspiracy theories that have lead to the most divisive rift in fandom history. Some of these range from Vic planning on taking over Funimation with a lawsuit, Fumination being a secret cabala planning on ousting Vic, and even Todd Haberkorn acting as a double agent. Many of the people in the AnimeGate movement have one goal, hire Vic back or destroy the anime dubbing industry in its entirety out of pure spite. It has come to the point where VA's feel the need to travel with law enforcement to avoid harassment, conventions picking sides, and even several attempted swattings. Conventions have doubled down on security, fans on both sides are spewing hate speech and threats, and a court case of epic proportions is in the making as I type this. AnimeGate is not simply a group of angry Vic fans as there are plenty of Vic fans who have handled this beautifully. AnimeGate is a political movement that wants to fight left leaning politics in the dubbing industry and destroy if it they must. Whatever side people are on, we can conclude one thing, as a result of this movement, conventions will never be what they once were.

Politics at the Cons

Journal Entry: Sat Feb 16, 2019, 10:28 AM
With the recent termination of Vic Mignogna from voice acting, there has definitely been a huge rift in the fandom community. It's come to the point where people are either fans of Vic who venomously defend him or supporters of the victims and victims themselves combatting harassment. As it tuns out, hating Vic is actually an unpopular opinion...and in many ways, so is being a democrat. Despite the amount of progress made, there are still leaps and bounds to go through before we can truly call the united states a country of equality. With this recent issue, those who stand with Vic are typically republicans with some exceptions, while those who stand against him are typically democrats with some exceptions. Those who are more neutral tend to be independents with some exceptions. One could argue that this is because Vic Mignogna himself is a republican and a strong roman catholic while his opponent, Monica Rial, is a democrat and an atheist. You can also tell what political parties dominate what social media sites based on this argument. It's no doubt that Tumblr is dominated by anti vic posts being a generally blue site while youtube, a website plagued with truthers and conspiracy theorists, is pro vic and more red leaning. While there are plenty of progressive channels on youtube, most of the time, they are mocked by the other side. It's also the polar opposite on tumblr. This divide has left a huge scar on fandom as a whole and the impact that it has left is astounding. Never in the history of fandom have fans been so divided and hateful to one another over this. Perhaps it is because this is the first time in history a person who was quite well liked by his fans was terminated because of me too. Most of the cases before this have been on big name hollywood creators and directors, but never anyone who would be called a heart throb. It was so much easier for people to dismiss Weinstein and Cosby because there was not really a sex appeal to them and they had previous records of being difficult to work with. When someone like Vic is hit with me too, things are going to get more heated because he is well liked and has sex appeal, something no previous convict in the me too era has ever had. Of course his massive fanbase is going to be angry and are going to try and fight these allegations through ant means necessary. I do understand where many people are coming from, it's hard to see someone you respect get hit with horrific allegations and you want to see the best in people but sadly that is not aways the case. In some ways, it is understandable why someone would be angry at Monica as she was the nail in the coffin for Vic and was the one to file a private police report against him, but you have to take of your fan goggles and look at things through a more realistic perspective. Why would a woman with a larger resume at a film compony and overall has a higher position than Vic want to lie or fabricate allegations against a subordinate? Monica does not have a history of any kind of dishonesty so why would she be dishonest now? The answer, she wouldn't as she has nothing at all to gain from this except her psychological closure.

But what about the future of conventions? Well it's never going to be the same as it was. Because of this issue, it's pretty easy to tell the political stance that dominates a particular convention. Based on a twitter study, here are my findings. This does not mean that those who run the con lean one way, it's more of a statistic on the guests that attend.

Cons that tend to have guests that are more likely to lean right include Bakanime, Anime Matsuri, and Anime Milwaukee.
Cons that are about half and half/independent include Dallas Fan Expo, ACon, KatsuCon, KawaiiCon and most of the con circuit
Cons that tend to lean left include Anime Expo, Pensacon, KamehaCon, Kamicon, Emerald City Comic Con, and Planet Comic Con

So what does this tell us about the future of anime conventions? Well, for one thing, we are going to have to be more vigilant and discerning about the cons we go to as currently, the Vic Mignogna drama has unfortunately jeopardized the safety of patrons and celebrity guests at cons. If Vic is attending a con, expect a lot of anti vic protestors to be there and make some noise. If Monica is attending a con, expect a lot of pro Vic protesters to make some noise. If Ian Sinclair attends a con, expect pro Vic protesters as he's become Vic's replacement at this point. I do not want to live in a world where such a divide exists but unfortunately it does and lives are at risk. Personally, here's what I think needs to be done to protect people on both sides. Conventions should have a rule that the Vic drama not be mentioned on property, especially around Vic himself and his former coworkers. Anyone who discusses this topic should be removed from the convention floor. This drama should be left off the convention show floor as cons are meant to be fun and not heated political debate hot spots. Pensacon was the first convention to initiate such a rule and while their methods were less than stellar, their hearts are in the right place. I do not want to live in a world where our con choices determine our politics but in a way, it has come to that. Whether you are on Vic's side or not. the convention show floor is no place for a political argument. If you have a problem with either Vic or Monica, it's simple, don't go to their booth or talk to them. Unfortunately, people could get hurt at upcoming cons and unless this topic is silenced on the show floor, your local convention could end up being the capitol hill of fandom. Stay vigilant and avoid unwanted drama. Have an excellent weekend and I wish all of you the best no matter what side you are on.

Working with The Employee From Hell

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 15, 2019, 10:36 AM
So with the drama going on with Monica Rial, I felt the need to tell this story as it's actually surpassingly easy to play buddy buddy with an obnoxious coworker...and yes, even a creepy one. So last summer, that guy was Rob. Rob had a very charming personality and had kind of a fanbase with the kids at the summer camp I worked at. I was one of those employees that would clock in, do my shift, and clock out. I like working with people like me because I take work seriously. So Rob would always show up late, he never got any paperwork done on time, he was always up in everyone else's areas, was really rude to the other staff, and even got too handsy with some of the female employees. Rob was a nightmare to work with yet myself and my coworkers were pretty elegant around him. We'd still engage with him and he even thought some of us were his friends but that'd because we never brought up some of the shit this guy would to to us out of fear of backlash from our boss. So Rob gets caught drinking on property and is written up. He has been working at this club FOREVER and he's gotten away with a ton of shit. All he got was a write up. So this other time, I'm managing the gym with the kids while they play dodgeball and rob literally comes up to me and tries to touch my hair. I push him off me and I'm like "Dude, NO!" but again, I didn't report it because I shrugged it off as Rob just being Rob and if I say something, my boss will shame me and claim I'm overreacting. Rob continues to show up late and harass his coworkers and we all play nice with him because he's popular with the club managers...until...he's caught smoking on property in front of kids. He got fired so fast and when it happened, everyone started to come out with their Rob stories. The employees of the country club had the last laugh. So of you go and assume that when people act friendly with coworkers that they claim are harassing them, just remember how easy it is to fake it till you make it. Just because two people look like they like each other doesn't mean they actually do. If you have ever worked with an obnoxious or inappropriate coworker at a job, I feel you, I've defiantly been there.

The Vic Situation

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 4, 2019, 7:46 PM
I honestly was never really a fan of this guy, I'd known of him and I respect him for his talent but I have heard the rumors and when rumors pile up like this in the span of 20 years, there has to be some truth to them in the long run. But honestly, most of these in the beginning were he said she said and flared up back in 2015 when settling down...until 2019 after the release of Broly. At first, again, most of these in the beginning were he said she said and I honestly cannot take those types of allegations seriously. I'm not a Vic fan but I am a kind person and I made a deal, if primary sources surfaced and any substantial and incriminating evidence that proved Vic was undeniably guilty of these allegations came up, then I would happily join in ruining his career and getting him away from cons. If he was innocent and most of these remained the he said she said type rumors, then I would let this go and call it a day. Well, that incriminating evidence is real and I am a woman of my word and because of Vic's actions, I had no choice but to reach out to KamehaCon and ask for his removal. They heard me and they ended up booting him but plenty of people do not know I had a hand in this. To those of you who are fans of Mignogna and wanted to meet him, I'm sorry but the rights of women have to ALWAYS come first. I would have loved to have talked to him about his role in the new DBZ movie but a promise is a promise and as a woman's rights activist, I cannot defend his ugly behavior or allow it at my local con in a place where women and children are present. I respect Vic's talent but I do not support him or his actions. I will still enjoy the new movie fine, the rest of the cast are wonderful people, but if this is going to continue, a new Broly has to be cast.

Vic has been banned from all his convention appearances this year as a result of these allegations. Once Jessie Pridemore spoke up about being raped by Todd Haberkorn and Vic's role in enabling Todd, that's when the true incriminating evidence started to spread like wildfire and absolutely destroy Vic's career as a con attendee and now is costing him his job. After Jessie's story, Vic's coworkers started coming out with their own unpleasant experiences with the actor and even a few videos were cited as evidence of Vic's poor behavior. The nail in the coffin came when ANN did an article on Vic's sexual harassment allegations. This was the article that proved that none of this was going to blow over and action was to be taken. After his final convention appearance at BakAnime, a video surfaced of Vic's alleged "apology". Let's go through this together with a personal story from your girl Phoenix.

I've been in Vic's situation TWICE, both in guilt and innocence. These are stories that are hard for me to share so understand that this is rather triggering and emotional for me. Two years ago I had to go to the library late to email a document to a professor. I wasn't smart about it and forgot to email it to myself first so I had t access it through a specific computer in the library. The computer itself was taken by this man and I politely asked if I could use it quick. He said yes but then I couldn't find the document and the man started to act out. I told him he was acting out of line and he actually had the gall to grab my arm and push me to the side. I saw an officer right in the room and got his attention to report the man but the officer insisted that I stay there and wait for another officer. I did not feel comfortable doing this and told him my thoughts. He sighed and I walked away, not knowing another officer was following me and wanting to stop and frisk me. I went to the door and saw this officer through the corner of my eye and tried to run. Another officer cornered me and I mouthed off to them, refusing to comply and give them my information. The officers surrounded me like they were about to pounce on me and I gave in and let them frisk me. Still, I had committed a minor misdemeanor and the next day, I had received information from the school that allegations had been made against me for the incident from the other night and I was to attend a disciplinary hearing. While the man was wrong to physically assault me, I was wrong to flee officers and mouth off to them. While this is not anywhere near the same as Vic's allegations, the way I handled this was oddly similar. I knew I was guilty, and reacted with gut and raw emotion. For the hearing, I wrote up a letter denying the allegations in a fashion similar to what Vic had done on his twitter. I then did exactly what he did at BakAnime, I cried fake crocodile tears and used sob stories to manipulate my audience and it got me nowhere. Getting defensive did not make the allegations go away or any less true, and I have since learned that admitting when one is guilty is better than trying to cover it up by hiding behind someone else.

The second time this happened was last october when my neighbor had cussed at me and threatened me after I had asked her to turn her music down. She reported me out of spite and the allegations against me were the very things she herself had done to me. I knew I was innocent and handled this much differently. I calmly presented my evidence and told my side of the story. The hearing board found me innocent and I have since learned from both of these times of turmoil. I'm not perfect, not by a longshot, I have done stupid shit, but I actually learned from my mistakes and have strived to be a better person. The point I'm trying to make with these stories is that I can see right through Vic because I did the same shit he's doing now in the face of guilt. His mistakes are catching up with him and after a recent coffin nail from actor Neil Kaplan with video evidence to boot, and support from fellow actors who have worked with Vic, Rooster Teeth has fired him and will recast his character in RWBY, a first in what I predict will be the downfall of his career entirely. The evidence against Mignogna that comes from primary sources is overwhelming and convincing. Kaplan also stated that Vic was still rude to con staff and late for panels, the same Vic, NOTHING has changed. I'm all for redemption as even the worst people can learn and change, but it does not look like Mignogna is that kind of redemption story. If you still support Vic, I will still be your friend and not hold it against you at all. I am going to stay true to my word though and am glad that justice is catching up with this infamous legend.

Broly's Second Coming Review: BRING IT ON!

Journal Entry: Thu Jan 31, 2019, 12:04 PM
Phoenix: Ok ok I reviewed the Broly movie and I reviewed it's canonical reboot and I guess I'm done with goddamn Broly once and for all so now I'm just going to sit back, relax and enjoy my ride on the jungle cruise...skipper, untie the boat from the dock and let's get on with the tour...

Skipper: Ok Phoenix! This is the last time you will ever see your family, WAVE GOODBYE! and now as we ride down this river, you will see...oh look the  republican national convention!

Phoenix: No those are elephants...oh

Skipper: And now we approach the most dangerous animals to encounter in a river

Phoenix: Gators?

Skipper: No

Phoenix: Rhinos?

Skipper: No

Phoenix: Vic Mignogna?

Skipper: GODAMMIT NO! It's HIPPOS YOU DUMBASS IT'S GODDAMN HIPPOS!

Phoenix: Well shoot em

Skipper: I can't

Phoenix: WHY?

Skipper: Because either you review ALL the Broly movies while at Disney World this weekend or I throw you overboard to the hippos

Phoenix: Is this because I mentioned Vic Mignogna? Dude, the guy is talented and he can be really fun to listen to but he's a goddamn creeper, if you like him that's fine, but no need to kill me over it.

Skipper: Well I am a Ranger

Phoenix: OF COURSE YOU'RE A RANGER, WE'RE IN THE F-ING JUNGLE!

Skipper: I'm not that kind of ranger

Phoenix: well what kind of ranger are you?...oh!...GET ME OFF THIS DAMN BOAT!

Skipper: Not until you review Broly's Second Coming

Phoenix: FINE! But this does not mean I'm a Vic fan and you have to let me go after we're done!

Skipper: Ok!

Review:

Well since i'm going to be stuck on this goddamn jungle cruise for a while and I have no way of getting out of this alive unless I comply, this is Broly's Second Coming.

About a year ago I reviewed Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan and absolutely hated it. It had a weak villain, a crappy plot, and Vic Mignogna's over the top screaming piercing through my ears for the entire second half. Then I came across the canonical reboot a few weeks ago and actually had the nerve to call it the best dragon ball z movie ever created. But then all this drama with Mignogna came up and has left a bad taste in my mouth. Well, it turns out I'm not out of the woods with Broly yet as the first one got a sequel...and IT'S EVEN WORSE THAN THE FIRST ONE! So as punishment, I'm subjecting myself to this lifeless sequel to a movie I despise. No one really stays dead in DBZ right?

Positive Elements:
As always, the animation in DBZ is well done, colorful, and nice to look at. The color choices here are not clunky or awkward, they feel right and it's always nice to watch. The fight choreography, while not the best, is still good and fun to watch. We get some good fighting between Broly and the kids and it's kind of fun to have a Trunks and Goten adventure rather than the sole focus be on Goku. That being said...

KAKAROOOOOOOOT:
Why is a Broly movie focusing on Goten and Trunks? Seriously, Broly is a character who's sole purpose is to be foil to Goku, he's Goku's evil, it makes literally NO sense for Trunks and Goten to be the leads in this. If they want to do a Trunks and Goten movie, that'd be fine, but Broly is defiantly not the villain I would have picked for this. Also, Broly died on New Vegeta, we see him blow up with it, there's NO way he'd be able to survive and make it all the way to earth. EXPLAIN MOVIE EXPLAIN! Also, while we do get some occasionally funny lines out of Trunks and Goten, the rest of the movie's attempt at humor falls VERY flat. There's one scene where Trunks actually pisses on Broly, no joke, we have bathroom humor in this movie, this is an all time LOW! It also takes a long time for Broly to even show up in this thing. They call it a Broly movie even though he's only in it for the second half. Granted the less OG Broly the better but still. And then we get to the worst part of this movie...*sighs* Broly. Just when I thought he couldn't get any worse, he's reduced to a meathead who can't say anything at all other than "Kakarot". I'm not Joking, that's ALL he says in the movie. In the original, at least he could hold a basic conversation with you. In the reboot, he's a gentle soul who ends up with the wrong crowd and just needs a friend in his life. Here? He's basically Trigglypuff but his trigger word is Kakarot. That's all there is to him, beefy strong dude who only says Kakarot. That's friggin it. The second half of this movie is basically Trunks and Goten hiding from Broly while pulling Tom and Jerry routines with him as he screams kakarot. The dialog is awful as well. There is literally NOTHING of substance here. The music is bland, even for a DBZ film. The story is not even really a story, It's more like a buddy comedy that falls very very flat. It's a hot mess.

Verdict:
The villain is even worse than he was in the first movie, the story makes no sense, there are a ton of plotholes, the humor is crap, it's a pretty weak flick. If you are a fan of this movie, maybe there's something you see that I don't, but for me, I'd be happy if hopefully, Broly stayed dead. This was Broly's Second Coming. God Kill Me!

Score: 4/10

Phoenix: Now skipper, Broly is dead, it looks like he's going to STAY dead RIGHT? RIGHT? SO I CAN GET OFF THE BOAT RIGHT?

Skipper: Well umm...

Phoenix: WHAT IS IT? AM I GETTING OFF OR NOT?

Skipper: *Holds up a copy of Bio Broly*

Phoenix: WHY? HOW DOES HE COME BACK IN THIS NEXT ONE?

Skipper: Oh and Phoenix...DRAGON BALL Z VIDEO GAMES!

Phoenix: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

(Check out my review of Bio Broly coming next week...yes, this is the last one!)

The Phoenix Court Blog 2: Case Closed

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 28, 2019, 7:27 PM
Greetings members of the Phoenix court, I am your judge and I'm here with rather unsettling news that puts the allegations against Victor Mignogna to rest once and for all. You all voted and while the majority of you were unsure what to think, out of the people who actually had solid opinions, the majority of the jury has voted that Mignogna is guilty. Before I present the verdict, I want everyone to know that whoever's side you are on, you are free to have separate opinions and I will not judge you for that because I understand where you are coming from.

The defendant Victor Mignogna of Los Angeles California has been accused of sexually harassing women and underage girls. The Phoenix court always withholds final judgement until undeniable proof arises against or for the defendant. The incriminating evidence that has recently surfaced is undeniable proof that Victor Mignogna is indeed guilty of the crimes he has been accused of.

The evidence:

Sample 1 comes from actress and cosplayer Jessica Pridemore who works for Funimation has come forward of Mignogna's involvement in a crime that for the sake of my younger readers, I will not disclose on this blog but I will say that it was a sex crime and while vic was not the one who committed it, a fellow voice actor did and told Vic that he and Pridemore "had sex" and Vic later harassed Pridmore on the issue. I can tell you who this is not. Sean Schemmel has voiced support for Pridemore and is ABSOLUTELY NOT the culprit. Whoever it is will come out eventually but the fact that Mignogna enabled him is enough evidence that he's done shady crap like this himself at some point. Sean Schemmel and several other voice actors have come fourth and condemned Mignogna and a true investigation may be imminent as well as a new Broly(Whoever gets the part had better make us proud!) The primary sources are all consistent with Mignogna's touchy behavior and the fact that he enabled his white knights to defend him suggests that he's hiding the truth. From all the primary accounts of assault and the condemnation of Victor from his costars(yes, even Sabat makes a subtle jab at him) have compiled enough sufficient evidence for me to declare Victor Joseph Mignogna guilty of the crime of sexual assault.

To any of my friends out there who are fans of Mignogna, I am still your friend and always will be. You feel how you want to feel, you do what feels right to you. To the people who feel that they have been taken advantage of, I stand with you. I will continue to report on this and once the criminal justice system has a verdict I'll be posting it right here. Again, this does not ruin the Broly movie for me, it's still my favorite and I'll be supporting it because Sean Schemmel and the rest of the cast are amazing and kind people that truly do care about human rights. I want you all to know that if you ever shall need me, I'll always have your back and I'll make sure that no one does any crap to you. Have an awesome week and let's get better together. Remember, when you hit rock bottom, the only way you can go is UP! This session of the Phoenix Court is now adjured.

Quest For Camelot Review:...#KickCamelot

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 27, 2019, 12:08 PM
People of the jury, there are some projects that are so painfully bad that one must wonder why they even exist at all. These are the movies that have multiple accusations of terrible writing, directing, and presentation. I never thought I'd actually find something EVEN WORSE than Troll in Central Park but they managed to pull this off in 1998 when Frederick Du Chau made his (unfortunate) debut with Quest for Camelot. Why is this one worse than Troll? Well, Troll knew what it wanted to be so even though it's crap, it's not paced awkwardly. Here, this movie is not sure AT ALL what it even is. I knew I'd have to travel down this rabbit hole eventually and I did...and I think I have a new most hated animated film. This is Quest for Camelot...GOD!

Positive Elements:
The only good thing I can say about this movie is the fact that some of the animation is decent, but even then the animation isn't that great. I guess one could also say that the themes of challenging traditional norms are not unhealthy to have in a film like this but it just feels kind of stilted and awkward. The one scene that had semi good animation was when our main cast enters dragon country and we get a fun little chase scene there with some good colors and backgrounds. Other than that, there's not much to find worthwhile here.

Kick Camelot:
Never in my life have I ever gone into a movie thinking it would be bad and it ended up being WAAAAAAY worse than I anticipated. Let's talk about the characters. Kalie is a boring cheap corporate rip off of Belle that serves no other purpose but to be a damsel in distress. If she wanted to be a knight so badly, she could have done so much more to further the plot than be someone who Garret needs to rescue all the time. Merlin hardly gets any screen time at all and Ruber is the most nonsensical and obnoxious excuse for a villain ever. Then there's that chicken...(goes legendary super saiyan and nukes everyone). The two headed dragons are just there to be shallow comic relief and the voice coming out of that Gryphon is so grading on my ears I was actually contemplating smashing my computer into the floor. The ONLY character that had anything to offer was blind man Garret. If this had been a story about Garret training under Merlin to be the next great round table knight, I would have watched this and enjoyed it fine, but it's not that, it's a fanfic mess of the Arthur legend that has little substance to offer. The songs are awkward and poorly written. They have little to no structure, especially the villain song, and don't add anything to the story other than exposition. The one good song is poorly used in an awkward chase scene that has NOTHING to do with the song. The animation is messy and clearly looks stilted and off at times. Some of the mouth movements of the characters also don't line up making the viewer think they are watching some bad dub. The pacing of the movie is awful. Sometimes the director does this weird thing where he chooses to fade to black at a key moment or during the middle of a scene that's showing us something before the scene ends. And then we have the things that are NEVER EXPLAINED! There are plants that move for no reason, a ripoff of the rockbiter that comes right the hell out of nowhere, punching flowers that can knock a full grown man out, a cameo from the ACME corporation, the dragons pointlessly separating for a second at the very end, AND THE CHICKEN HAVING NO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WHEH BECOMING A GOOD GUY AT THE END AND HIS UNEXPLAINABLE LINE WHEN HE CONFRONTS RUBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST EXPLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN!(Goes into the saiyan rage state and loses all sense of reason while blowing up a few cities and destroying half of the human population, anime voice actors have not been spared, that's how bad this movie is...RUN SEAN SCHEMMEL I SHALL SPARE YOU BUT THE REST OF YOU, I'LL GET YOU FOR THIS, YOU WON'T ESCAPE MY WRAAAAAAAAAATH!)

*FireNationPhoenix is then sent to a remote planetoid after her friend wished her there with the dragon balls and gains her sense of reason back to finish the review*

THAT'S IT I'M WRAPPIN IT UP!:

Quest for Camelot is an obnoxious atrocity on the animation lineup and serves as a reason not to let Frederick Du Chau EVER direct a film again. I'd start the hashtag KickFred but let's face it, there's no need to since he stopped directing bad movies altogether in 2007 after Underdog and has not been seen since. The pacing is awful, the music is awful, the film is not consistent and the characters are bland cooperate shells of Disney characters. It's a hot mess and it deserves every ounce of hate I can throw at it. So let's #KickCamelot to the curb and keep it in the dark ages. Quest for Camelot is one medieval blast from the ass that is better off not pulled out of the stone it sits on.

Story: 2/10
Characters: 4/10
Songs: 2/10
Animation: 5/10

Score: 3/10

Sentence: On second thought, let's not go to Camelot, tis a silly place!

The Phoenix Court Blog 2: Twitter vs Vic Mignogna

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 26, 2019, 2:20 PM
Greetings jury of the phoenix court, Your host is back with some big accusations being made here and as always, this blog is meant to cover celebrity controversies and you, the readers, get to decide on weather or not the accused is innocent or guilty. While the first blog I ever did on the Sean Schemmel was more jokey and meant for laughs, this one is pretty serious so please, make your decisions as I present some rather unsettling content for you to evaluate. This court meeting is now in session!

The case:
Over the past week, a number of allegations against Vic Mignongna have indeed been kicking up steam, and this picked up right after DBS Broly, if you have not seen it yet, please do because I'm not letting any of this ruin Broly for me, I'm sensible enough to separate actor and character. Anyways, There have been plenty of these going around twitter for the past few days and some of them are kind of ridiculous, but then you get to others that delve into the uncanny valley. It's a pretty insane rabbit hole to go down. *Trigger warning, the following information may be sensitive for some readers*

KickVick:

The evidence pointing against Mignogna is actually kind of unsettling. There are plenty of primary sources and these allegations have actually been going on for around 20 years now. The most common allegation is that some fans who have met Mignogna claim that he gives unsolicited hugs and kisses to female fans and refuses consent. Some con staffers also directly claim that Mignogna is a difficult guest to work with and pretty miserable to be a handler for. Mignogna also seems to change up his stories rather frequently when it comes to the situation regarding signing yaoi art. Sometimes he says he just doesn't do gay art, other times he's said he doesn't do fanart in general, a blatant lie, and recently he stated on his twitter that he doesn't do non canonical art. Mignogna also leads a rather cultish group known as the risembool rangers, and recently leaked images from discord show Mignogna encouraging these fans to defend him in this case. In short, we've got a guy who's hiding behind his white knights. There's also a primary source claiming that Mignogna gained the trust of a minor by inviting her to hotel rooms, making phone calls, and sending her stuff, when one day, he decided to pull a Claude Frollo and got creepy with her in an elevator. Finally, the most incriminating evidence against Mignogna is the fact that Sean Schemmel, his costar, has stood up for the apparent victims and has liked a few of their posts to show support. There are also plenty of videos online of Mignogna giving unsolicited affection to females and once you see it, it's kind of hard not to be weirded out by it.

IStandWithVic:

There is also evidence in Vic Mignogna's favor that presents itself as follows. Mignogna comes from an italian family and italians tend to be more hands on than americans. Hugs are a common greeting between strangers in Italy as is a kiss on the cheek. Also, most of these allegations on twitter are not primary sources but rather people claiming "my friend said" without linking to any direct evidence. A lot of it is just one big "he said she said" that doesn't really go anywhere. Many fans have also stated that their experience with Mignogna has been positive and that they never felt unsettled around the man. There also has never been a formal investigation on these claims until now and many of the primary claims are pretty old. Also, Mignogna has not been removed from any major cons he's listed for at this point in time. So far, the news has been pretty silent on this except Polygon but that's kind of expected from them. So far, this has remained largely on twitter and is now picking up steam because of the recent big break Mignogna got as Broly.

The Verdict:

This is a pretty serious case and I'm not taking it lightly. Both sides have their evidence and feel pretty strongly about their positions. Me personally? I think that anyone who hides behind white knights is playing a dangerous game and is guilty of something. This is not going to stop me from enjoying my show or my fandom as I can love the art and feel iffy about the artist. The DBZ fandom isn't rid of me just yet. After all, the rest of the cast is nothing but kind and respectful people and I will show my support for them, especially you Sean, you are the best! But this is your choice to make. If you think Vic is innocent, you go right ahead, I'm not going to put you down for it. If you think he's guilty, you go right ahead and think that. Until a formal conclusion is made, we can only speculate. The poll is up so cast your vote now. Have an awesome weekend and I wish you all absolutely the best.

The Hypocrisy of Focus on the Family

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 19, 2019, 8:00 AM
Yes I'm going to be coming down on these assholes and coming down on them HARD!

I'm sure most of you have seen Star Wars New Hope. Hell, I'm sure you all have seen The Force Awakens. The first star wars movie was really a groundbreaking film and it remains one of my favorites to this day, but it is a violent flick. People get shot on the spot in the first 30 seconds of this sucker, there's plenty of mild cussing here and there, the first 15 minutes of the movie gives us a planet explosion that results in the death of millions all because Tarkin wanted to be a dick and make a point to Leia, people fall from great heights, most of the second half is heavy action involving shooting and explosions, and after it happens, the movie just kind of ends. In the Force Awakens, we have a similar formula in terms of violence but this film was less violent than New Hope...however, New Hope is PG while Force Awakens is PG-13. Yet for soand the other whome reason, Focus on the Family, the christian evangelicals on a crusade against anything that isn't a bearded eagle chomping on a hot dog while talking in a thick texas accent and waving a striped flag, seems to praise the hell out of these movies. They have NEVER ever given any star wars film a bad review despite the fact that the star wars formula is the EXACT formula that we get from Dragon Ball Super Broly. Let me explain.

In the first 30 seconds, Frieza arrives on Vegeta and shoots a couple of saiyans(Like Star Wars), the first cuss drops within the first 10 minutes(Like Star Wars), Vegeta gets blown up within the first 15 minutes leaving few native survivors left(Like Star Wars), the stylized fighting kicks off within the second act of the movie and refuses to let up until the very end and just kind of stops(AGAIN LIKE STAR WARS) and we further explore the relationship between one man who's a wide eyed naive idealist(LIKE STAR WARS!) and the other man who's a hardened ex rogue who used to work for the villains(OH MY GOD IT'S STAR WARS, IT'S FRIGGIN STAR WARS!). Oh and said ex rouge marries a woman who's friggin loaded with cash and has a new outlook on life because of said woman's influence ...might as well call Nappa Chewbacca at this point.

So even though there are quite a few differences between dragon ball and star wars, the basic personalities of the characters are similar to one another. Hell, even older Han Solo is still a badass fighter with a hidden soft side. That said, Focus on the Family has a big "west vs the rest" mentality. Any time they review any film that has elements from other cultures or dives into progressive themes, they go on a literal witch hunt. If Broly was a star wars film, they'd be giving comments like "this is a fun thrilling new take on old concepts with classic likable characters" or something of that nature, but because this is anime, it must be the devil because it's not american enough.

I will say this though. Dragon Ball Super Broly's violence level is not as violent as New Hope but it's about the same as Force Awakens and I'd say the number and type of cuss words is about the same as well. This movie SHOULD have received a PG-13 but the truth is, the academy does not have much respect for animation so it got a PG. If you take a film like Force Awakens and convert it to animation, you would have something a lot like this movie. Focus on the Family does not see it that way and continues to spew their racist xenophobic agenda to unknowing parents. If you took your kids to Force Awakens and they were ok with it, then they can handle Broly fine. Broly should have been a PG-13 film, but the academy is full of assholes who don't respect animation and see it as purely kiddie stuff. What I'm trying to say is if Focus is going to praise Force Awakens, then they should be more open minded to films with similar content. If they want to condemn Broly, they should be condemning star wars as well.

Well I hope you enjoyed my little ranty thing, now I'm off to the theater to see the movie again...and watch star wars later XD.

Dragon Ball Super Broly Review...He's Back!

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 18, 2019, 12:29 PM
Oh god, it's happening, BROLY NOW OFFICIALLY EXISTS IN THE DRAGON BALL UNIVERSE!...*sighs* BRING IT ON!
*Spoilers DUH*

For those of you who don't know a year ago I watched Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan and found to to be a hot mess. It had a weak and bland villain, over the top dialogue, even in the context of DBZ, and after it happened, I decided it was by far the worst dragon ball z movie I've ever seen...at least it was until I discovered another Broly movie that was even worse. And then came movie three which is without a doubt the worst one. Then this movie came along and it is a Broly movie once again meaning I have to review it. Now I was going to review Quest For Camelot but trust me that atrocity is coming later. This is Dragon Ball Super Broly

This is without a doubt THE BEST Dragon Ball Z movie of all time! :iconyesfinallyplz:

Quick Note For Families: You don't have to be a fan of Dragon Ball Z to enjoy this one. When I came into the theater, I saw a wide variety of people there and oddly enough, there were a lot of young kids in the theater that fell in love with this movie. Honestly, for a Dragon Ball Z movie, it's surprisingly something that would be pretty appealing to all age groups and even all genders. Most of the DBZ movies are definitely fans only but this one gives viewers enough backstory that you can just jump right in and enjoy it. That said though if you are considering taking any little ones with you, please keep in mind that there are some scenes and characters that sensitive viewers may be uncomfortable with but it really depends on your kid. I honestly don't believe in the Focus on the Family bullshit that if a movie has this many fight scenes or this many swears that it's (in the words of Mermaid Man) "EEEEEEEEEEVVVVVIIIIIIIILLLLLLL!" because it really depends on your kid. Most kids should enjoy it ok, all the kids in my theater loved it and most of them were little girls. I know several people on twitter who have told me that when they were kids back in the toonami days, they were afraid of Vegeta who I would say at this point is a kitten compared to some of the newer characters. Just know your kid and if they can handle all the action, they will have a great time on the adventure. Let's just say, if your kid can handle Star Wars, they can handle this fine.

And Now On With the Review:

Broly as a Character:
When I first came into this I admittedly in some ways got what I was expecting, but in all honestly, there were plenty of surprises and interesting choices made here. In the original story, Broly was not only extremely powerful but he was a violent ball of rage who could not say anything other than his infamous "KAKAROOOOOOOT". He was pretty bland in the original story and was just kind of there to be the huge boss fight. In some ways, he was a bit of a big lipped alligator character. Here Broly is more of a Quasimodo type character, someone who could do some serious damage if pushed far enough but is a misunderstood gentle giant. Yeah, we've heard this story, it's Ferdinand the bull but with saiyans though what they do with it is surprisingly compelling and actually kind of relevant to the way some conservatives go too far when parenting children who don't necessarily fit in with social standards. In that case, the Frollo of this story is Paragus. He's a complete asshole who's constantly nitpicking and micromanaging his son because of the fact that he was born with an abnormal CP. He doesn't let Broly speak unless he's told it's ok, he calls Broly a danger to others, refuses to let Broly pursue his own interests and even hooks him up to an electrode device...I'm not kidding, that's in the movie. Gee, where have I seen this kind of parenting before...Oh yeah, the F%$king Judge Rotenberg Center treats their students EXACTLY like this! For those of you who don't know, there's a video on youtube of a news reporter visiting this place to find out if hooking mentally divergent children to shock devices is an abusive practice. In this video, she meets a young girl named Rachel wearing a shock device on her arms, neck and legs which is hooked up to her. Rachel seems to be calm but refuses to speak. The reporter asks to see the shock device remote and as soon as the aid pulls it out off a belt on her waist, Rachel tries to back away, moans and starts to cry. There's a scene in the movie that actually goes almost EXACTLY like that and for some people, it could be triggering.
What's interesting about what they do with Broly is the fact that there's some animal motifs with his character being likened to domestic dogs, ,more specifically, bully breeds like pit bulls and rotties, dogs that have some of the strongest bite forces in the animal kingdom but are in general pretty gentle animals that don't attack unless seriously provoked. We even see that at one point Broly had a pet that was kind of like a space dog. Paragus of course wanted Broly to be a fighter so he considered the "dog" a distraction and shot its ear off. Broly decided that he'd keep the animal's ear pelt as a makeshift blanket to wrap on his waist in order to remember his pet. Broly is also socially awkward, shy and even a bit emotional when he finds someone he trusts, that person being Cheelai. Broly does not want to be a soldier for Paragus but would rather live a peaceful existence on Vampa, of course Paragus disapproves of this and forces him into Frieza's army to which Frieza can manipulate him more. Broly is not fighting Goku because he wants to, he's fighting because he's been provoked far enough by his father and Frieza and cannot control his suppressed emotions. He's a complex social outcast who cannot control his own power yet and just wants to have a friend or two in his life. This Broly is 1,000 times better than the original and there were moments when I was actually crying. This Broly is a reflection of real world child abuse and for a dragon ball z movie, they tackle the abuse of divergent children by parents and teachers rather realistically and thoughtfully. Cheelai is not a peer to Broly, she's a legitimate friend and what comes out of their bond is really heartwarming. I can say this, you will end up rooting for him and smiling when he gets to pursue his own life in the end.
Positive Elements:
The rest of the cast is also pretty well put together. We see character development from almost everyone, and yes, even Frieza has several moments of this. Goku and Vegeta are the highlights of the movie besides Broly and are just a ton of fun to watch. Goku's got some good one liners, Vegeta's got some softie moments and of course, the fight choreography BLOWS the rest of Dragon Ball Z away. This movie's fight scenes kicked ass and no expense is spared here. The animation is superb and is without a doubt, the best in the franchise. I'd even say it reminds me of Don Bluth animation, it'd gorgeous to look at and although a bunch of craziness is flying at you, it looks amazing. The backstory on our saiyans is also well thought out and executed. We meet Goku's parents, a loving saiyan couple that sense something is up with Frieza and want to save their son by sending him to Earth. We meet Vegeta III who's an ableist power hungry jerk, and we get to see plenty of other new saiyans with distinctive personalities. Everything is connected in this story and it really shows how hard they were trying to write a thoughtful and compelling piece. We get to see plenty of amazing new locations, some excellent backdrops and get more insight into what makes these characters tick. The humor in this is also some of the best in the franchise. We had people in my theater cracking up when Goku and Vegeta left Frieza to deal with Broly for an hour while doing the fusion dance. There's even a nice little message about being who you are which is really nice to see out of a dragon ball z movie. The musical score is also pretty well done. Unlike any other dragon ball z movie, the score here is more orchestral and feels theatrical. The Gogeta transformation is absolutely perfect and is everything fans of Gogeta were hoping for. The final fight is just phenomenally animated and really blew  me away on the big screen. Also, the fact that they chose to let Broly live on as a friend to the main cast with more adventures to come for him is a positive way to further the message of the movie. The way this movie is executed is near perfect and serves as an experience that both fans of the show and newcomers can go and enjoy. What can I say, this movie is a fun and emotional popcorn flick that will leave you on the edge of your seats and cheering for our main cast.
Nitpicks:
There are definitely problems as with any movie. I'd say the biggest one is the waist of Beerus as a gag character. This is the friggin GOD OF DESTRUCTION and they reduce him to a throwaway gag early on. They also don't do a lot with Whis and that was kind of disappointing. We do finally get to see Whis in combat but it's blink and you will miss. Also, Frieza has lost a lot of his intimidation at this point. I'd say he's more of a troll than an evil emperor and his purpose in life is now just to mess with Goku rather than blow up his planet. It gets some good laughs but it feels out of character. These are the only true problems I have with the movie and honestly, these are really just nitpicks and not true criticisms. I really can't find any real faults with this one, and that's saiyan a lot ;)
The Verdict:
Rarely do I consider a movie, let alone a dragon ball z movie, in the ranks of classics like Star Wars and Close Encounters, but Dragon Ball Super Broly truly deserves to be recognized as a cinematic classic in its own right. I hate most of the dragon ball z movies with Wrath of the Dragon and Battle of Gods being the only ones I really liked. This movie BLOWS all the previous films away and for me, even surpasses the entire franchise. New risks are taken here, more challenging topics are talked about, and our characters are more grey rather than just black and white. What makes this movie truly spectacular is that it can reach an audience beyond the fanbase. I saw people of all ages in that theater and I'd say about half the theater was non fans interested in checking the movie out for a popcorn flick night. I've only ever given a standing ovation in a theater to Star Wars VII, Coco, Arrival and Black Panther. Dragon Ball Super Broly is now on that list of films I've stood up clapping for. The visuals are stunning, the characters are multi dimensional, the story is near perfect, the music gave me goosebumps, it's a masterpiece of science fiction. I'd tell you to go see it, but let's face it, you probably already have. This is one super saiyan sized flick that will leave you cheering and asking for more.

A Troll In Central Park Review...Lord Help Me!

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 13, 2019, 6:02 PM
Don Bluth, man I love you and respect you as an artist which is why I follow you on Twitter but my god they are not joking when they say that A Troll In Central Park really is a terrible movie with little substance. Of course me being the kind person that I am, I can point out one or two good things about this hot mess but that's about it. I've never heard of or seen this movie until fairly recently and honestly, this movie has a lot of potential to be something interesting but was not given proper direction and in the end, just was this cheap bland corporate shell. I've endured quite a bit of crap online and I can say that that terrible drawing of Sailor Jupiter my friend showed me last year was better than this movie, and that's saying a lot. This is A Troll In Central Park. GOD!

Positive Elements:
As always, Don Bluth artwork is phenomenally animated. He knows how to get really nice colors and effects in his work and any time I watch one of his movies, I feel like i'm watching stained glass move off the walls. His design choices and color palates look crisp, clear and lush. He knows how to use colors to evoke feelings and emotions. Any time I look at Don Bluth animation I can't help but enjoy it. The designs of the characters themselves are actually not that bad and some of them are actually kind of good. That being said, Don Bluth animation is always good but in this movie, it's the only good thing that's offered here.

Characters:
The main cast is about as bland as you can get in a kids film. Stanley is obnoxiously optimistic, Gus is a whiny brat, Rosie can't even talk, and the flowers, god I want to squash all of them. The only interesting characters in this are Lort and Gnorga but it's Cloris Leachman, she's always fun to watch. Even then, the dynamic between the hero and villain is poor and weak. In Dragon Ball Z, Goku and Vegeta worked as opposites because Goku was a saiyan who wound up in a situation that halted his intended plans for world domination. Vegeta was basically what Goku would have been had he not been raised by humans. He was a legitimate threat and Christopher Sabat's performance is actually much scarier than Ryo Horikawa's take on Vegeta(Yeah I said it sue me). There is substance the stakes are high and Goku has to save the world by turning on his own species. With Gnorga, yeah Cloris Leachman is a talented actress but the character is neither threatening or impactful. This makes the character relationships feel very weak and botched. There's not much to say about the characters except the only ones who have a tiny bit of an arc are Gus and Lort, and even then there's not much there. What can I say other than what everyone else has already said about them?

The Story:
There is not much of a story here. This movie is 80% dancing flowers and 20% kind of a story about an ugly ducking trying to fit in with his society. There's hardly any effort being put in here to tell a story and it's not Don Bluth's fault. There are many elements in this movie that make no sense and towards the end, the characters just bend the laws of the movie's world to their whims leading to complete nonsensical garbage. The message of this movie is also botched as instead of Gus taking responsibility for his actions, he selfishly demands his father to do what he wants to do and that's basically it. 90 minutes of dreams, flowers and crap and all for a botched moral. This story does not amount to anything. It would have been a much better story to have Lort as the lead character and Gnorga banish him to central park where Lort is an outcast but eventually finds a way to fit in and learns to defy everything he's been taught by his wife. That would be a good movie but that's not what we got.

The Songs:
Every song in this movie is filler. That's the purpose and that's why these songs fall completely flat. There is not an ounce of originality or creativity in these songs and I found myself wanting to bang my head against the wall when a character stated singing. Don Bluth should not write musicals. There's no reason for the songs to be there, they don't further the story, and one of them even leads into a Big Lipped Alligator Moment with a pirate ship that explodes. I'm with Gnorga, Stanley and his flowers need to drown in the tears of people who watch this movie.

Verdict:
This movie is awful. It has no purpose, nothing of substance, no story to tell, and a botched message. It's bland, obnoxious, and not even worthy of entertaining your three year old. Don Bluth has admitted that he would have told a better story had the studio not interfered so much with his work and honestly, when I read about what this movie could have been, it's even more tragic that it turned out so bad. Unless you want your brain cells to die, don't watch this movie. My Neighbor Totoro is a much better movie of this type. This troll can certainly stay under its bridge for all I care.

Betty Krawker

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 1, 2019, 6:01 PM
When I was a kid, I used to play neopets and for those of you who don't know, Krawks are the most difficult pet to obtain alongside Draiks and when I was 9 years old, my grandmother gave me a trading card deck that happened to have a Krawk card. Since then, I had made it my goal to obtain a Krawk myself. I eventually gave up on neopets and have not logged on the site for about 10+ years...until this morning. I decided to log on there for old times sake and as I'm feeding Scorchimo(my scorchio), I get this message from this guy and I click on it. I open up the note and it's a Krawk morphing potion. I'm thinking in my head "YES!" and decide to transform my Kougra into a Krawk, and I've waited 10 years to do it. Something about that felt just as satisfying as the day I caught my first wild dragonite. Thank you childhood goals.

What Is The Greatest Animated Movie of All Time?

Journal Entry: Thu Dec 20, 2018, 7:42 AM
Spoiler Alert! It's not Lion King,

Now that that little disclaimer is out of the way, it's time to find out what I feel is the greatest animated movie of all time. Before we do this though, I will tell you what I think is the greatest animated show of all time. It's not my favorite show, it's actually third on my list, Korra is my favorite show. The greatest animated show of all time is a show that
1. Has fantastic groundbreaking animation
2. Left an impact culturally, not financially
3. Tells a coherent story
4. Was a landmark in animation history

Now one could argue that it would be Looney Toons because that left a huge impact and was a true game changer in television, but for me, the show has to tell a legitimate story and actually have a beginning and end. If I left coherent story off the list, Looney Toons would be my pick for the greatest animated show of all time, but I find story to be quite important as a writing major so in terms of all this, Avatar the Last Airbender is the greatest animated show of all time. It's not my favorite show(TEAM KORRA) but it had amazing and groundbreaking animation that was ahead of its time, left a huge cultural impact on society in a way no other animated show has done, tells a meaningful and epic story that is timeless, and is a true landmark on animation history. Avatar deserves this title from me and the reason why I didn't give it to Korra despite it being my favorite show is because Korra was a continuation, and the show is more current rather than timeless. It also was more of a social issues landmark rather than an animation landmark...and besides, Steven Universe had LGBT couples before Korra ever did. So I will not be ranking movies based on their social or political messages, that's for a different blog, and I promise it will be a good one. That said, let's get into it.

So I will decide what is the greatest animated film of all time based on these factors
1. has fantastic and groundbreaking animation
2. left an impact culturally, not financially
3. tells a coherent story
4. Has a great score
5. Was a landmark in animation history

Like the TV shows, I have two answers for this. I will not be giving this title to any modern AMERICAN films so no disney renaissance films. I will say this though, Beauty and the Beast is a pretty good contender for this title but some of the pop culture in it ruined it for me. I will say that it is without a doubt, the second greatest animated film of all time.
One of these films is a Disney movie, the other is not. Anime shows and films based on those shows are not contenders as that's also for another blog, but movies animated in Japan or any other foreign country are fair game.
The first film I selected is probably going to shock you. It's Pinocchio. Why this one? Well, even though it wasn't successful financially, this movie was a game changer for animation. The animation was way ahead of its time and in some ways is even better than some of the modern films(Including Lion King). The movie has cemented itself in our culture as a timeless classic and the music has become a mantra not just for Disney, but for kids and adults everywhere. The score is gorgeous to listen to and the songs are big parts of our culture today. The story is clear, meaningful, coherent and impactful while remaining as timeless as possible. The film knew when to be light and fun and also dark and scary in the right moments. The pacing is perfect, the characters are flawed and human, the lead is interesting, there are no unlikable characters or songs, it's a strong strong film. Because of all these traits, I feel that Pinocchio is one of two greatest animated films of all time.
So number two is Spirited Away, specifically the japanese dub/the original dub. This movie was a true landmark in animation as it was a cultural success, and yes a financial one too. This film has rich animation that really pushes the boundaries, all the characters are likable, flawed and go through a dynamic change, no pop culture references to ruin the timelessness, a meaningful and impactful message of survival in the working world and pulling your weight, and a different kind of love story with a twist. This movie is one of the few movies I like to call almost flawless. It's jaw dropping, the pacing is perfect, the characters are perfectly written, the message is perfect, the animation is perfect, it's just a masterpiece. This movie is on this list because it didn't leave a huge impact in it's own country, it left an impact all over the world and that's truly what makes Spirited Away the other greatest animated film of all time.

But this is all my opinion. If you disagree with me, that's ok, I'm not here to judge. Have a great week and enjoy life,

Report Card

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 17, 2018, 8:47 AM
I invested hours into this semester and months on this one 20 page essay and I ended up getting A's in everything except gender studies because my group F-ed up our final project which brought me from a 91 to an 89...yeah i'm kind of pissed about that. I have this friend and she and I often go to the bar together on weekends and she got mad at me because I kicked her ass in psychology this semester. I honestly was not expecting to get any A's on my report card, I thought I bombed my psychology final because this teacher has a nasty habit of putting trick questions on the tests just to mess with us, and with trick questions, you really never know. I have not answered a singled dA note because of school and now that I'm on break I can finally get to answering private messages. I just want to say this, Evan I'm so sorry I didn't give you my psych study guide, I honestly thought mine was crap and not worthy to share with anyone but I'll share one with you next semester if we have class together again, please forgive me man. Anyways, I don't usually get A's, I'm a B student so I don't know what happened for me to get A's because I was expecting like three B's and two C's but apparently I did a crap load better than I thought I was doing. In college you don't know your grades until the end of the semester so all you can do is speculate...and then there are the teachers that take days to post grades. My english teacher had us turn in our term papers on tuesday and took almost a week to grade them and post them on our academic records. The worst grade I've ever gotten in anything was a 65 in math and math is not my subject...but I passed so I never have to take it again. The single best grade I've ever gotten in any class was a 98 in psychology...but I honestly don't know how I got those grades this semester. At least I don't have to worry about grades again until after the DBZ release. Have a good break, if you are in college I hope you did well.

Story Time: Crazy Fan Club Manager

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 15, 2018, 4:47 AM
Ok so last night I'm browsing twitter and in the corner of my eye I notice someone kind of familiar hanging around the dragon ball fandom...someone I absolutely despise with every fiber of my being. Now this person only knows me as FireNationPhoenix from deviantart and instagram(I'm thinking of changing my instagram username) and I've mentioned her a few times on this blog but because she's on my block list she'll have no clue what I'm doing and I can say whatever...just not going to say her name though even though she has been stupid enough to...

1. Insert her first name into her moniker
2. Write her first and last name on all her artwork
3. Use the same moniker for every single social media platform

So she originally had a tumblr but was banned for posting "adult content" and has since migrated to twitter like the rest of those participating in the tumblr exodus. I have a history with this person and it's not pleasant. For those of you who don't know, years ago there was this user in the Avatar fandom and her name was Carly. She was posting some really offensive homophobic comments all over Korrasami fanart and so I decided to take a break from the fandom as I didn't want to deal with that drama. I sent a note to one of the managers of one of the ATLA fan clubs to let her know of the issue and that I would be taking a hiatus. I admit I could have formulated the note better but I was still a kid at the time and this person was just entering her senior year at college, but it was still a legitimate reason for concern. A day later in my psych class, I'm about to take this test when my phone vibrates and it's a letter from the manager I emailed the other day. I open it up and oh wow my jaw dropped. What I had received was a five paragraph long essay on how this person thought I was delusional, Carly wasn't real, I'm crazy, I need to see a therapist, I am overreacting, it's all in my head...and it ended with an exclamation point. I just looked at it kinda blankly and went...
"What?"
I decided to ignore it but after several weeks the more pissed I felt about it. I finally decided to politely confront this person for her rather rude commentary and this was right after I'd just come home from a vacation with my family in Tennessee. I emailed her back telling her politely that I did not appreciate her choice of words and that I wanted no trouble with her. I get an email a day later from her and I kid you not, it was in all caps and another five paragraph essay on how psycho this person thought I was...and this time she added that I'd been emailing her a ton of times and it was annoying her.

"What the hell?"

I'd only emailed her twice and here she was accusing me in some essay that I'd emailed her at least 10 times. I decided to ignore it again but this time my friend wanted to know what was going on so she emailed this person and asked her for her side of the story. The letter my friend received was a very threatening all caps rant on lord knows what and when I asked her what she had said, my friend just looked at me and said this,

"You don't want to interact with this lady, she's got issues."

I decided that I was going to self term(Get fired on purpose) and so the next day I sent a message to the manager that was more blunt than any of the others I had sent out. She replies by saying this,

"Phoenix you know better than this...you know, we're gonna send you home, don't come back...EVER!"

And so I just sort of left. I blocked her, high tailed it out of her club and went on my way. As I'm about to exit the fan club, I noticed that there was Zuko fan art EVERYWHERE! Apparently they were having some kind of Zuko event and I had never seen so much Zuko in my life! All that fan art made me consider taking back what I'd said and getting back into that club but I was tired of being harassed and threatened by this manager so I just left. So imagine walking out of a job that you liked and amp that up my a MILLION, and you will have an idea of what my virtual walk off of Avatar fan club property was like, the managers had the last laugh...or so they thought.

So I never interacted with this person again on social media but after I had left that fan club, a lot of new doors opened up for me. I had told this story to Dante Basco on snapchat and a few months later I was getting messages of support from Olivia Hack, Jennifer Hale, Giancarlo Volpe...Even Grey Delise got wind of this story and made a reference to it. I ended up getting the opportunity to manage the Korra fan club and started out as a contributor but last summer my boss handed the keys over to me and now I'm the president of the Korra fan club. I was able to get out of a toxic situation and find another place where I could be a manager myself. Carly ended up getting banned from dA and no one has seen her on social media since.

So when I saw this person had migrated to twitter, I didn't say anything. I just clicked the block button and that was it. I'm not going to let her interact with me or even look at my profile because I have no need for people like her in my life. Ever since this happened it spurred me to amp up my art skills and challenge myself to beat myself at my own game. I've become a much better artist and a more level headed person since then and even though I really hate this lady, I have to give her some credit for forcing me to push myself out of my hole and find my own way in the world. I have a plan to one day rent out the Los Angeles Convention Center and have a big party there for all my close friends and ride around on a palanquin through the city. Los Angeles be afraid...cus we're comin!

I have more stories on the way, have a happy holiday season and now I'm heading back to Chicago...yay.

The Case With Tumblr

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 4, 2018, 3:27 PM
There is a huge outcry against Tumblr's decision to censor quote on quote "adult" content as a result of the monopoly that is Apple. Some are even saying that Tumblr will evolve into a goody goody southern christian community as a result of this. Me? I don't think so. Tumblr is alienating a huge portion of its fanbase but I doubt the site will become a conservative religious haven after this. But aside from that, it's still a damaging decision on the part of the staff. Personally, I get uncomfortable looking at imagery that is explicit to the point where it's tasteless but I do have respect for adult content so long as it's done tastefully and done well. I've even posted a few NSFW things myself on tumblr but this was usually pretty rare. What I like about deviantart is there's a nice compromise for this stuff. You can post more mature content so long as you flag it and even then there are fair boundaries that explain what is ok and what is going too far. Tumblr is just getting rid of all mature content without any sort of compromise and it's going to kill the website fanbase. I can say that there is plenty of content on tumblr that belongs in the dark web or should be removed completely because of how deplorable it is(Nazis, homophobia, racism, sexism, ableism, child porn...) but the stuff that tumblr is willy nilly getting rid of is not.  stuff like artistic nudity(yes that includes fanart) and tasteful presentation of things like sex and intimacy are important and people should be allowed to express this stuff there. There's one NSFW artist that I do have respect for, Nala1588. Her blog is pretty explicit and depicts some pretty erotic imagery but it's done so creatively that honestly, as long as she flags this stuff as mature and tumblr came up with a compromise, she should be allowed to draw and post what she wants. But no, there's no middle ground, there's no compromise, there's no resolution with the porn bot problem or the white supremacy problem, IT'S JUST TUMBLR GIVING INTO BIG BUSINESS AND THEY SUCK AT IT LIKE EVERYTHING IN THIS SITUATION SUCKS!!..,ok I'm cool now. *sighs* I'm going to be honest, I'm not leaving tumblr because it's the one site where I've actually managed to develop a bit of a fanbase and I do like the unique blogging style but unlike tumblr, I'm willing to make a compromise. I'm going to participate in the tumblr log off day which will take place on december 17th because tumblr's decision is definitely wrong and tasteless. Logging off will give them less ad revenue and hopefully will get the message across that giving into big business is ultimately the wrong thing to do. If tumblr doesn't listen to us, then it's just sinking its own ship and I'm willing to go down with it. Well if you ask me if tumblr has any freedom of expression to offer at this point, I say woof.

Of course this is my take on it and if you feel different, that's fine. This has been FireNationPhoenix...and now i'm going to get a coffee
