As I said in a recent journal, I'm training to improve with drawing masculine features by doing quick ink portraits of twelve real men I consider handsome and who were definitely masculine.
This is Warren William, an actor the height of whose career was in the early 30s. He was the first to play Perry Mason. He was also a World War I veteran and invented dangerous things, and came from the town where I live.
This portrait was hard because of the open-mouth smile and direct sunlight of the reference photo. I didn't really get a likeness and the shadows turned out a little weird, but it's all part of the training. The sketch perhaps looks better; you can see it on my blog: snowflakeclockwork.blogspot.co…

The light is pretty hash here, but I think that actually works well with this inking.
