Fever and Feverish Leveling

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 2, 2012, 8:57 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

Hello everyone! All good things come in pairs right? I am alive after my 'good things.' Just wanted to post an update since everything here has been a bit on the quiet side over the last week. I've been running a fever on and off. Nothing serious, but enough to be annoying and make me feel no so hot. Which leads to my distraction... warcraft. Admittedly I've been playing for quite a number of years but the most recent expansion has been great! Video games when you don't feel like doing anything else seem to make the games better. Not sure why... but yeah. Everything is so pretty and there so much stuff to do (other than killing things, not that killing things isn't fun). The first night was pretty chaotic but things seem to be settling out and despite the fact there is a bit of that lingering headache (I don't know if anyone else gets these when they get sick, but its just something I wake up with and sticks around for days) but I seem to be functioning.

I do have a couple of characters flitting about on my tumblr (sketch/wip tumblr if you weren't familiar with it-> firecatrich.tumblr.com/) that need finishing and proper introductions, so stay tuned for that.  Also still fiddling about for a unique skin for the tumblr. I'm really bad at coding. I've sat down and tried some of the online 'teach yourself' CSS or html and its just... hasn't been clicking very well. Work in progress!

Final bit of news:

Gah! I commissioned an icon of Evanya and it turned out great! EmixNaru has been doing these and I'm just tinkled pink with how cute they are.

Going Offline

*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to let everyone who might be looking for me know that I will be offline from midnight (Eastern) tonight to midnight on Saturday. There are some issues with my ISP what require me to be have the hardware plugs undone for a 48 hour period. I will see you all Saturday night after midnight (which I know is technically Sunday morning)!

The Birthday!

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 17, 2012, 2:22 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

Hello everyone!
I am posting this journal to inform everyone that it is my birthday and I really appreciate the happy wishes. I will be out celebrating/visiting friends for the next 24-48 hours so from this point on I will not be able to thank all of you for your messages. Thank you in advanced. I just didn't want to come off as rude or distress anyone by my disappearance.

Second note is that my tumblr is up and running and has all sorts of sketches and what not that don't go into my DA gallery. You can check that out over here if you wish: firecatrich.tumblr.com/
The mature content/NSFW warning is up on it if I have set everything properly so please be aware of that when you click.

Have a good night and see you guys late Wednesday night.

Tumblr for Sketches

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 15, 2012, 4:20 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

I've been considering for some time starting a tumblr of the large number of unfinished/warm up/in progress pieces I seem to have. It does exist now with a once a day post for the time being while I figure out how this all works.

Collabs and Trades

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 5, 2012, 12:32 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

I'm up and running again as my previous journal entry has mentioned. I would like to get back into the community and get some collaborations (either lines or coloring or something inbetween) and art trades going. If anyone is interested leave me a comment or note me!

On another note I have been looking into constructing and maintaining a tumblr for more regular updates, sketches/wips, and the like. I will keep you all posted on how that goes.

Rise Again

*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

I have return! Everything from here on out should be back to normal. I have my own personal computer so I can be on regularly and paint uninterrupted. It really is distressing to not have my own desktop after being so used to it.

Brief Interruption

Journal Entry: Tue May 29, 2012, 9:03 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

Hello everyone out there in the land of the internet!

As the title would suggest there will be a brief (two weeks to a month) time where I will not have regular access to a computer and/or internet. I don't want to alarm anyone if you don't see me stalking around for the month of June. I will do my best to post/answer/interact as normal but it may not be possible from time to time. If you have an outstanding commission with me ( I think there is only one or two of you) I will be contacting you all shortly if I have not already talked to you about this. Thanks!

That is all. Now back to your regularly scheduled internet!

Photography

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 11, 2012, 8:03 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

To everyone that watches me:

Over the next few weeks I will be posting some of what I consider my best amateur photos. They are from 2010 on and most from my vacation trips to Canada.  I thought I would just give everyone a heads up. I will attempt not to flood anyone, limiting myself to one or two a day.

That is all.

Thanks for watching!

The great penguin project is finished and has been sent off! Sorry I've been a bit quiet the last month or two, but I've been working away at this gig for about as long. Now that its finished I should be back to the normally scheduled programming. Well, as normal as I get at least.

The Moon's Black Gold

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 30, 2012, 8:55 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

All of this talk about the moon base that the US will have in 8 years (according to Gingrich if he gets elected twice) has lead to a very strange notion that the moon has a great amount of natural resources that we could harvest from the moon and use on earth. While out to lunch, the idea that the moon some how has oil on it (or in it) really confused me. I'm not sure where this idea came from. While it is true that the moon will have minerals and rock which are actually remarkably similar to that of the earth (as with current theory that the moon and earth arose from a collision of two planetary bodies and had an exchange of material) I think I can safely say that the moon will have no oil (petroleum) similar to that found on earth, if any at all.

To quote wiki on the origin of petroleum, "It may be possible to make petroleum from any kind of organic matter under suitable conditions. The concentration of organic matter is not very high in the original deposits, but petroleum and natural gas evolved in places that favored retention, e.g., sealed-off porous sandstones. Petroleum, produced over millions of years by natural changes in organic materials, accumulates beneath the earth's surface in extremely large quantities."

Which the earth and moon might share similar components in their rocks, there is no live that we know of on the moon. It might be a sad thing for some, but there isn't any foreseeable black gold on the moon.

Donating to Causes

Journal Entry: Sun Jan 29, 2012, 5:45 PM
*Tumblr* - *Twitter*

*So like most of my journals, these are my opinions and I address some social and religious issues that some people might find offensive. If you aren't really interested in reading and discussing that sort of thing like a logical and respectable person I would recommend not reading this entry.*

So I've been seeing a great number of messages asking for donations for various causes. A lot of them have these pathetic images of children and poor conditions in an effort to guilt people into donating. Before I go further, there are people suffering out there in the world and not everyone has all the things they need even on a basic level. Some of these groups do go out and drastically improve conditions where some run into this bog of either not being able to do enough or the execution turns into a catastrophe (like food and medical rations getting stolen by the oppressive groups in power). The other side of the coin comes with trains of thought that often leave to a sort of bitter out look on helping people. I've been dwelling on this for quite some time when it comes to my fundraising efforts and passing it along to groups I think actively help the world through their function. There seems to be a few major groups that I've looked at closely. Its not to say I'm a large contributor by any means but I would like to think the little bit I give now and then helps.

1) Preventative/Medical Efforts
I think the most notable of these around would be Doctors Without Boarders and Nothing but Nets. I'm particularly of these groups just because they don't seem to have an over the top religious message that goes with their efforts. Personally I don't think offering help with one hand and religious strife with the other is something I would want to support. Secondly there are a lot of very small things (some of which are very cost effective like mosquito nets or some basic preventative care) that can make drastic changes in a person's life. Whether we like to think about it or not, but improving the life of a few people can help the over all health of society on a world stage. Ideally everyone wants to have a baseline sort of existence where we aren't worrying about starving to death or facing curable illness just because of where someone lives.

2) Educational Efforts
I have some really mix feelings about most of the groups that go out into the world to educate. I realize that missionary work has been the source of education in places where there aren't teachers in the past, but I think education for the sake of helping people shouldn't take advantage of their vulnerable state and stuff dogma into the education system. They don't have any alternatives and I really think its taking a captive audience and exploiting them. I have really liked the new Oxfam commercials though. They seem to have a focus and through out plan to help with a group of people (women on a world stage) and helping to bring their whole communities out of poverty. I also really like to group organizations like Heifer International in this group. They give communities a hand up by giving a gift (animals in Heifers case) that are used to help families get a leg up out of poverty and then spreads beyond just the basic donation.

3) Basic Needs Efforts
This is one of those areas I have the most difficulty getting behind. Not to be confused with disaster relief (sending aid is a necessary process in a world where countries take care of each other and share the burden of disasters), basic needs help to bring in food, water, and other basic needs to help support communities who can't get these things on their own. In the past when land cannot support the people on it, the people are often left with two opens, to leave and seek better places to live or to stick it out and see it things get better. Some places in the world are really not set up to support a lot of people. The land is poor or water is hard to come by. In places where there is a sudden population explosion, this can make the problem much worse. Just sending food and water to a place that cannot support to population will allow to continue to grow and become dependent on the inflow of supplies. Whether we like to think of this as a game of numbers or not, there will be a point that some kind of population control will step in and often to very sad results. Disease, starvation, or other kinds of mass die off become very likely in some of these scenarios. People don't like to control their own population by either having fewer children through either birth control or just not going at it. Ignoring a major problem like population control doesn't mean its not going to come back to bite you later. We often see this problem is fast replicating animals like rabbits. Their population explodes (and predators either don't keep up or have been removed from the environment) and then it reaches a point where there is a mass die off. They eat the food source down and starve or disease spreads among the high density population and the end result is a long of dead rabbits. Its easy to think about in rabbits, but it is true of people too. When I see commercials that start of with 'this little boy/girl is one of 13 that doesn't have enough food,' this is one of the first places my brain goes. No, its not the kids fault that their parents couldn't keep it in their pants and I do feel badly for them, but there is a good chance that just sending supplies for them to survive means that kid is going to follow in their parents footsteps and have a lot of kids.  If you don't want to see a lot of starving kids, my thought process goes to the idea that there should be a lot of kids to start with. I think my money is better spent in one of the other charity areas that do more that just sending supplies.

4) Not People Related
I think this last group is pretty self explanatory. World Wild Life Fund and other environmental groups  who have a primary focus that isn't on people. There are questionable things that happen in this group (like open harassment of business owners by some self proclaimed environmentalist) but, championing these causes I think come with the feeling of becoming particularly green and even if they don't have a direct connection with people, they do help people by protecting the earth as a whole. The feel good and maintaining the land/animals aside, if you like living on a hospitable planet that is relatively easy to get what we need to survive we will need to maintain it. We don't have any other options as places to live (unless you vote for Gingrich and believe the moon is going to be an option in 8 years).

So the long and short of it, I think the world and its issues is something to think about and these are my thoughts on it.

Very recently I went through phlebotomy (wiki article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phleboto…)  training and I was really shocked by some of the misconceptions about the profession. In the United States at least it is required for any phlebotomist to be licensed to take draw blood for any medical diagnosis. Other health care professionals that can draw blood includes nurses and doctors. The major difference is that phlebotomist specialize to just one task and spend the majority of their work day (from my observations at least) drawing blood, labeling, and handling the paperwork involved with the specimen.

As a student we had to volunteer to our classmates. We needed practice (a lot of it) before we were turned loose to training with the public. I can say with great certainty that bring drawing two or three times a day for a prolonged period is not fun even when you are healthy. There was a lot of class work involved as well as practical training which all lead up to my exam. I am still waiting for results actually.

What shocked me the most was when I went to my training site. I was supervised by a licensed phlebotomist while I drew patients. What shocked me the most was how many people turn down being drawn by a student and most seemed irritated if not angry at being asked. All of us that go through training of one kind or another and mind you we aren't the all the best at things when we first start but I would gamble to say that I had come to somewhere between eighty and one hundred successful draws prior to my placement in the hospital. They really don't turn us loose to 'experiment.'

So its just something to think about. When you are asked, it would be find if you said no because you weren't comfortable, but there isn't any reason to be ticked off about it. We are supervised and while there are risks involved with anyone drawing blood there are precautions taken.  Also thank you to everyone that did allow me to draw and improve my technique on the way to my full license.

Alright, who thought the title was serious? Silly people. Anyway, I came across this video on youtube that I found rather amusing and actually was related to gender and a little bit of culture commentary in there too. For those of you that haven't seen Mr. Deity (its a witty sort of humor in my opinion at least) and enjoy the tongue and cheek humor you should check it out!

Hey everyone!
I've been working away on my winter folio (for everyone that watches my other galleries I will have some preview shots up in the next week or so!) but I was hoping for a commission piece to work on to get a little variety in. I love my annual folio and I think this year will be the best thus far.

So the details!

Cost: $50

Up to two characters in full digital glory with a simple background. The finished pieces will be emailed to the customer upon completion. Average turn around for a commission piece is between one and two weeks depending on number of characters and detailing. Pieces can range from rated G up to adult work. One preliminary sketch will be provided to the buyer for corrections. 24 hours will be allowed for buyer to make any noted corrections before work on the finished piece is started.

Payment is through paypal unless we work something else out in advance. All payment is due after the preliminary sketch.

PM me if you are interested. Thank you!

I've seen that some artist and writers will crop and edit to meet DA ToS and posted in other galleries with the full image. There seems to be a number of reasons for this like adult content in varying degrees, male nudity (which seems a bit less accepted here on DA than female), copyrights (logos, paid jobs, commissions, etcs.), and so forth. What do you think? Is it really worth it to cut and crop for the sake of posting pieces or the other option would be to maintain other galleries where the ToS is different?

I'm finding myself with some free time between commissions. I was wondering if anyone was up for a trade or two! Leave me a comment or send me a PM. I think I'll take on three at a time to keep things manageable.

Thanks!
