Here's an early design I did of Kylie while still in Australia. The suction tank weapon she is wearing was designed by Matthew Brady one of the artists on my team.

It's very steampunk.

Yeah, before steampunk was a thing.

This design of Kylie is cool.  Never seen her in this outfit before.  ^_^

Her outfit here is close to what she was wearing in first two episodes and what was, sadly, rejected later. I always like that clothing...

Unfortunately I didn't have final say on the way Kylie was dressed. All I could do as designer was throw ideas out there.

If I understand it right, they changed her appearance because it was too hard to animate such a detailed outfit, so, I guess, it coulfn't be helped, sadly... But first episodes variant was much cooler, that's for sure.

Richard my boss never cared how hard anything was to animate, I was more concerned about that than he was.

Kind of off-topic, but... May I ask about one of EGB designs? The ghost from Be Careful What You Wish For, ep 0113, accorfing to Wiki, the one that was kind of parody on Wishmaster movie... I was always wondering if there was any specific reasone for his appearance, I mean his true dinal form from the end of the episode. That's one of my favorite episodes, but I've never could figure, why he was so... whalelike or something.

If you would have time to tell about it at some point, that would be really great.

Thank you anyway.

One thing that ALWAYS bugged me about the writers for kids TV animation is the lack of imagination, they were often so dry for ideas that they would unashamedly rip off classic Hollywood movies. I was brought up very strictly and as a result saw no classic Hollywood movies growing up other than comedies from the silent era. As a result I wasn't in the club, all the writers knew what films they were referencing but had no idea. In the Alf days (and long before PCs and search engines) I would have to go out of my way to research the actors for their likenesses, eventually a full-time librarian was needed to help out.

A decade later on XGB I barely gave a crap, if the writers couldn't get invested in the show and write to the characters and concept I wasn't going to waste my time. However I did grow up watching "Lost In Space" and it was actor Jonathan Harris (Dr.Smith) who voiced the "Ghost Salesman" for this episode.

The split brain, double baleen whale top lip idea came from an Everett Peck sketch. I reworked it and added the rest of the body.

Wow! I've never thought of that... Must be extremly hard to work, taking in consederation just how many references there were in that show.

Thanks for your answer! It's really interesting.

I just like to invent rather than copy. To me copying is dull, anyone can do it.

Any time :)

I loved all the XGBs, but Kylie was by far my favorite. What a surprise to see one of her designers here on DA after all these years!

Thank you for your role in making such an awesome and memorable character. XGB was truly a hidden gem, and one of my favorite cartoons of my childhood: excellently-written, well-designed, actually scary, and a worthy entry into the Ghostbusters franchise. The only thing wrong with it was that it was gone much too fast... sigh...

I'm glad you like how she turned out.

Thank you. Yeah it was pretty intense from the production end of it.

Almost steampunkish in design, which is prescient because that's coming into it's own light now.

I don't know if steampunk existed or had a name when I did this.

Well then you were thinking ahead of your time!  :)
