What do you enjoy about cosplay photography?
I like all stages from the planning of the shoot to the end product but my prime motivation is creating pictures that show the true beauty and power of the model and the cosplay they choose. I want the effort that they have put in done justice and I just love people and they images that they produce. I love to see a cosplayer light up when they see the preview pic or when I give them prints, compliments are always welcome, squeees/glomps preferred. Weeaboo and rabid fangirl at heart.

What kind of shots do you like to take?
PEOPLE PEOPLE . . . . I love conceptual shots and closeup portraits. I love people's faces and their features just gleam though the lens, the whole package comes together and often the finest details like contacts, makeup and expressions are lost in long range and group shots so I always try to get some closeups and full size shots for costuming if I have time. For conceptual shots, I like to mimic a scene from the game/anime, if I can't (don't have a ref pic) I'll get as close as I can.

Post-processing or no post-processing?
I'm using Photoshop less and less and processing in Lightroom as much as possible to adjust colours, contrast and levels and spot fixes. Lightroom also allows nice colour alterations for more interesting effects. For the model editing, I'll try to even out skin tone but encourage my models to use makeup, this minimises or eliminates the need to do any skin edits. I'll almost always use PS to do basic sharpening and give the image a bit of a pop. I do do more extreme edits sometimes (especially if the cosplay is from a game).

What equipment do you use?
Canon 5D MK III
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L II
Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Misc gear includes Canon 580EXII's, pocketwizards, diffusers, gels, boring stuff like that!

What do you do besides cosplay photography?
Non cosplay photography, I work full time in medical (bookkeeping), I play bass in a death metal band (currently on hiatus) and I cosplay (the oldies will know this one) which has also been on hiatus.

Which conventions do you usually attend?
I was original floating around between 2002 - 2007 in AUS, attended some conventions in Japan and then had a break for 2 years. Recently it's been Animania and Supanova.

I stumbled across this image when check out the #Resin-Aperture "Monochrome Challenge" . . . . . I don't do critique's often but this image is just stunning . . . . and after spending hours tonight trying to do a monochromatic image myself I've realised how hard they are to do.

The composition and the focus are what grabbed me initially. The doll takes up over half the image yet the other elements in the photo are still just as intriguing and important. Nothing seems to dominate in this picture and take away from other aspects. The blues are just wonderful and it all works perfectly. I like the angle that the guitar is placing creating that small amount of blur at the back because of the perspective. The smaller flowers in between the roses are perfectly placed to break up the bulkiness of the roses themselves which otherwise, would have made that part of the image look a bit flat. The choice of the fur wig in this has made the image, I don't believe the same effect could have been achieved with the synthetic fibre wigs.

The only improvements that I would suggest would be to edit out the skin on the arm and the bright pale blue area near it. They both detract and don't seem to play a role in the composition. I think for your first try aoikihou, you should be very proud of this result!!!

This photo just screams IMPACT . . . . even the thumbnail of the deviation blew me away. I'm excited to do my first critique (after receiving my first recently).

It's overall feel is stunning and no one can deny the blend of colours is eye candy overload. Probably the most daring aspect of the colour choices is the choice to put the same or similar colours next to each other, this is risky and can make an image look drab or unbalanced, but this photo does not suffer from this at all. Probably the most obvious example is the red on the neck, at first glance it really looks like it's part of the fabric/dress then it jumps out at you that it's makeup, it's fantastic. The use of a contrasting blue colour is so minimal and the proportion of blue to red is very small, yet the blue has so much impact on both the eyes and with the wig. That colour on the eyes is my favourite colour in the whole picture, it's exquisite!

Technically this photo I feel needed to be cropped a little more at the top to fill the photo completely with the model herself! Otherwise it's fantastic, it has lovely focus and the wall behind does not take focus away from the model but actually creates a lovely contrast to bring the colours out in the costume even more. Profile views can often be a bit boring too but this one certainly is not. The choice to put the model on the side leaning forward makes for a more dynamic picture that the standard "stand up straight" profile views you see most of the time. Her mouth slightly open add a little sultriness to the picture and makes you want to know what she is looking at, what has her so transfixed?

Maybe it's her reflection because wouldn't it be hard to avert your gaze if you stumbled upon this photoshoot in session!!!

Thank you very much OpiateTart, you are the first person to do a critique on my submissions and it's appreciated!!!

I saw some of your other critiques and it's really good that not only do you take the time to do them but you really go the effort to make your comments valuable and relevant!!

What you said was very appropriate, I think you'll find of the thousands of people who own these dolls there is a high proportion of them who are obsessed with the perfection that the dolls can represent that is lacking in our own view of ourselves and others around us.

It was the first time I had ever had gel nails done, it was lengthy, expensive and they were annoying to have on for a month or so but when I first left the salon I couldn't stop looking at them thinking "They look so perfect, my hands look perfect now" and being a little preoccupied with my hands every movements in the weeks to follow I started to realise why people wear makeup, get plastic surgery, dye their hair, fake their nails etc etc . . . . I became obsessed with the doll perfect nails I'd been given. Then one day a few weeks later I misjudged grabbing the handle getting into my car and it snapped off partically! I looked at what was left underneath which was a meld of old nail, new nail and the glue sludge substance that was holding it all together and though to myself "It's broken, the perfection is broken, it looks disgusting, it's over".

Then ironically enough in the hours between then and when I got home, I'd knocked another two accidentally and then 3 were gone. When I came in the house and saw the dolls I instantly knew that the juxtaposition needed to be captured!!

Wow, that was a blab and a half . . . . but in short, yes you nailed it (no pun intended), we are often blind to the red line that stands between what is real and what is not (in the context of ';perception of self';)

Thank you . . . . I didn't expect anyone to notice ;)
Perfect doll, broken human
Thanks for the feature!
