GIMP Halftone Pixel Script

EDIT March 24, 2009: Updated script! Previous version would modify an entire image and this was a significant limitation in my opinion. It's now been modified to work on an individual layer or the visible layers within an image. You can also set the blend mode/opacity, add a layer mask using the original layer as a mask, and invert the colors of the layer mask/halftone layer. These are subtle, but very nice additions. Thanks to saulgoode and PhotoComix at gimptalk.com for the suggestions.

Delete your previous version if you have it to avoid conflicts.

This GIMP script takes an ordinary image and adds a halftone pixel effect based on the steps described in this tutorial: photoshop-tutorials.deviantart…

Installation Instructions:

Click on the Download link and you will be given the option to open/save the script. If you choose the save option, it will most likely be saved to your desktop. Just get the file and drag/drop (or copy/paste) it into the GIMP scripts folder (location described below).

If you open it, you'll see a bunch of text. That's what it's supposed to be. Go to file Save As and save it to your GIMP scripts folder (ie....C:Program FilesGIMP-2.Xsharegimp2.0scripts)

Then go to Filters > Script-Fu > Refresh Scripts.

On an open image in GIMP, go to Filters > Decor > Halftone Pixel...

Works on RGB and Indexed images.

It's a simple effect, but I like it. The script was created for GIMP 2.6 and above. I don't know if it works in early versions and, since I don't have an earlier GIMP version on my computer, have no way of modifying it to work on previous versions. Sorry.

The script will let you choose the dithering pattern for different outcomes, but the default dithering option is
"Positioned", which gives the result shown in the tutorial and in the preview image above.

You can view other options here:

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
