Boreal Force - Rangifer Profile

Here's the 16th profile in my original characters encyclopedia project. This one features the third of the five protagonists in my Boreal Force team.

Since all of the members of Boreal Force wear colour coded costumes, I've given
Rangifer the signature colour of yellow. She's also got the caribou totem attached to her belt. I'm not totally happy with how the totem turned out, but I do think the colour scheme of her uniform is the strongest of the three thus far. In contrast to Canis and Ursus, I actually had a difficult time trying to think up a backstory for Rangifer. There's an element of tragedy to it like the others, which seems to be the linking factor. I am weary of throwing such strong hardships into all their backgrounds though out of fear that it may seem cliche.

Rangifer is a bit of an exception to what I've been doing with this team. I had posted a poll asking you all to rank iconic Canadian animals and I hadn't included the caribou (a massive oversight on my part since it's on our frikkin' quarter). I did, however, include the moose and it pulled in third place. Since the moose and caribou are so similar, it stood to reason that I could simply switch them. Regardless, I want to give a shout out to those of you who voted and contributed to the selection. Specifically, I'd like to thank GDupons, Godzilla713, bjv016, Jose-Ramiro, kingziggy, Steelpoodle, Gold-Reaper, m4gichat, SargimusPrime, Jovan2013, DanFalcon, K-Jounin, Biruka, Thoth23 and ParisNJones

For those who need clarifications as to what the power rankings consist of, you can view the outline here: static8.comicvine.com/uploads/…

As always, I love hearing from you all so please feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments section. If you all would like to see more of these profiles, please let me know.

Enjoy! :)

Hmm, yellow member of the team that is the heart but needs thicker sick. Balances out I think.

Though I swear she reminds me of Vixen in places mainly due to her parents and upbringing - the whole activism aspect of Vixen's character is probably what is causing my deja vu.

Still, there's an obvious character development for her - along with learning that it's okay to take time for herself - and her role on the team is needed given the previous two.

Plus, her being vegan makes sense seeing how she has a Caribou totem.

All and all, quality is consistent.

Thanks!

That's a bit of an odd comparison since Mari and Lauren's upbringing are very different, as well as activism really not being a part of Vixen's character not being a thing until only recently. Vixen's mother was murdered and her father was a Reverend. Not to mention she was raised in a fictional African village. I mean, they're both Black women. That's what they have in common... ^^;

That's what I was referencing, even though it's recent.

That's naturally going to be something that will be a recurring element to many Black women in fiction (and in real life). Think of the CW interpretation of Thunder, for example, or of Nova Bordelon on Queen Sugar if we're looking at something outside of the superhero genre. The more activism we see in fiction the better, I say. That way, we normalize the pursuit for human rights, animal rights, and environmentalism pushed into the mainstream consciousness.

I would comment on that it shouldn't just be black women that are characterized as activists seeing how there are all types of people as apart of a cause, but - as you said - the more activism we see in fiction the better.
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
Absolutely! We can look at why that is as well. Representation for people of colour on screen is still fairly low. When we look at the types of characters we see who are people of colour, we'll see ones that are very stereotypical and ones that are more multi-dimensional. So, is there enough room there for a breadth of roles where we can see activism reflected within every group? And even then, how honest and multi-dimensional is that activism going to be? For instance, will these works of fiction tackle the anti-blackness that is very much present in the activism done by certain white people/NBPOC? Is privilege and proximity to whiteness going to be thoroughly examined? When we see feminists in fiction, are they going to be intersectional in their beliefs and approaches? When we see vegans and animal rights activists, are we also going to see them tackling poverty (especially when it comes to food deserts)? There's a lot to think about and consider. That's why it's so important to get marginalized voices into creative positions, so that they may be able to more authentically write these stories. At the same time, they shouldn't be singularly responsible for educating people and only writing characters who are socially conscious. Know what I mean?

To a degree at least, I do.

You're very passionate about this I see ^^;
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
I suppose so. It's merely an extension of my wish for there to be proper representation for those who are all too often misrepresented or underrepresented.

That's a hell of a uniform for a police force I'll tell you that. Then again, there are Power Ranger/Super Sentai teams with multi-colored spandex uniforms so who am I to question? (Hey come on, man. I wanted make that joke. I couldn't resist. :P)

Joking aside, I do like the color balance of yellow and white as well as the placements on the yellow. Interesting cute deer patch on the side. Plus if I may say this especially superficially, Lauren looks fucking hot.

As for her backstory, I'm rather fond of this one a lot, kind of reminds me of Misty Knight in Luke Cage in a way; both passionate in fighting for justice. But yeah, I easily see myself rooting for this woman.
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
They're actually not a police force. Boreal Force is a special governmental task force and each of the members are pulled from various branches of intelligence, military and law enforcement. I guess that means your "joke" is kind of off... ^^;

Of course the various Super Sentai teams wear colour coded spandex. They are superheroes, after all. :P

Another correction, Rangifer's animal is the caribou (not a deer). Perhaps you missed that in her bio...?

Regardless, thanks for the comment. I appreciate the kind words. I'm glad you like her design and character.
Movie-Man's avatar
Whoops. Missed that part. Sorry about that. But you're welcome. :)
Jose-Ramiro's avatar
Thanks for the mention, and she looks great.
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
Thanks. Glad you like her appearance. What do you make of her biography?
Jose-Ramiro's avatar
That she'd be an excellent social worker if she wasn't a hero.
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
I suppose she would.
Jose-Ramiro's avatar
Yeah, you even comment she has a motherly/big sister role in the team.
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
Yes, I suppose that would be the simplified and archetypal way of viewing her character. Although, she's far from being the oldest and the team are made of adults.
Jose-Ramiro's avatar
True, but still, just because they're adults doesn't mean they don't need emotional support. She wouldn't be the first youngster that helps an older teammate to deal with personal issues.
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
I wouldn't call a 30-year-old a youngster. Hahaha!

But yes, this is always true. I just like to think of things without labels or archetypes if possible since I think that humans can't necessarily be so easily boiled down to the tiny little boxes society and fiction creates for us.

Your point about adults requiring emotional support is extremely valid and important though. I do wonder - do you think it would be valuable to create a psychiatrist character to provide the necessary support they would need?

And another fantastic entry to the team has been added. I really love the new personality traits given to her here, especially given the idea that she can work herself to far. You don't often see workaholics in teams like this. Her design is also unique, helping to differentiate her from her team mates we've seen so far, mostly in her build. She's slender, but she isn't dainty. She has the right blend of sleek and strong. That caribou totem is also pretty nifty.
Femmes-Fatales's avatar
Thank you! As always, I appreciate your thoughts on my work. I'm glad you like what I've done here with her character.
bjv016's avatar
She's another great one if you ask me. I think her personality is interesting. The idea of a caribou vehicle is also something that catches my attention. In fact, all the vehicles sound pretty cool. I definitely see the Sentai influences in this team now. Also, her gloves rock.

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it! :)
