I'm in the middle of studying right now, but I figured I'd clear out my Sta.sh again. This was an idea I actually made a while ago. We have spiders that grow to waist-height and rat-sized silverfish, so what about other giant insects? Besides, I'd like to see a tameable flying mob.
I made two different color schemes for this guy, but I'm having a hard time choosing which one to suggest for vanilla. Though admittedly, I think the blue one looks better to some degree.

Imagine a dragonfly the size of a bird of prey. Now, imagine getting such a creature to fight all those annoying spiders for you! Good news - now you can do exactly that, provided you actually kill a spider or two first. Basically, dragonflies are aerial killers that attack from above, devouring prey on the wing. Chickens, bats, silverfish, and spiders are fair game to them... especially spiders. The Dragonfly is the Spider's arch-nemesis, and one of its advantages is that it can hover just out of reach of the Spider's pounce. When flying normally, it hovers briefly in one spot then quickly darts to the next, making a distinct humming sound as it flies; when attacking anything, be it an appetizing meal or someone foolish enough to poke it with a stick, the bug will hover briefly then dart in to bite before whizzing back out of harm's way.
So, how do you tame a dragonfly? The secret is to recognize their favorite foods - though they attack most small, wriggling things, their rivalry with spiders means they ADORE Spider Eyes, and like a wolf with bones, you can tame a dragonfly with spider eyes (raw, NOT fermented). Once tamed, they can be healed with any sort of meat, and their wings can also be dyed like wolf collars; when ordered to "stay" they rest on the block they're directly under, but when active they will fly about randomly, no further than 100 blocks from your location. If something tries to hurt you, they'll fly straight at the aggressor and, well, dive-bomb it to death.
Spider Eyes are also the requirement for breeding dragonflies - but you'll also need a body of water nearby to do this. The dragonfly pair will immediately head off to the nearest pond and deposit a nymph - a "baby" version of the adult without wings. The baby will remain in the pond for a day or two until it grows its wings and takes to the sky.

Whoa whoa, chill! This was something I made a while ago... I'd actually like to see your take on something like this as well.

Interesting concept. I especially love how you've pointed out that they've got giant insects, how it would make sense to have more and how you've simply designed it. However, I'm not sure about it being able to be tamed. It's only because insects aren't intelligent enough to be tamed. Then again, this is probably just me being too literal XD

Thanks man :D. One thing I should point out: Minecraft is not realistic. Spiders that big are not realistic. So hawk-sized pet dragonflies don't have to be, either.
I've seen a lot of suggestions about taming spiders on the forums, but they're meant to be hostile enemies. So for the record, I think this works just as well. Besides, I wanted a tameable flying mob and practically every suggestion I read about such was either birds or dragons, so I think a giant dragonfly does make a refreshing change regarding this idea. :)

I suddenly feel like the people, that say my ideas aren't realistic, when I use the same argument XD

Hehe, sorry ^^; Just pointing it out :XD:

No, don't be sorry. I should be saying that for being so anal about giant insects and their intelligence XD

Apology accepted if you have any . That notwithstanding, I've read from some sources that arthropods are capable of similar cognition to vertebrates, so I guess contesting that point is moot :XD:. Case in point, I shall quote from an article I found: "Honeybees, for example, can count, categorise similar objects like dogs or human faces, understand 'same' and 'different', and differentiate between shapes that are symmetrical and asymmetrical." - [link]
