Throughout the ages people have suffered discrimination in a number of ways. There is racial discrimination, religious, sexual, cultural, economic, age and disability related to name some of the best known.
I'm Mike Peril. Most of you know me as a photographer working in and around the Denver area. I recently teamed up with Fawn Grey, who is a model now residing in L.A. to produce a collage of pictures set to music that we believed would encapsulate the struggles that Fawn has in a world that does not fully accept Fawns binary status. Non-binary being a catch-all category for gender identities that are not exclusively masculine or feminine.
While this performance piece goes well beyond discrimination and oppression aimed solely at non-binary humans, the message the piece portrays is a constant.
Before viewing our little video collage please note that there are graphic images of hate and violence as well as nudity so therefore you must be over the age of 18 to view it's content. If you are an alt-right thinking individual you won't enjoy this presentation at all so maybe you should go see what's on Fox News. There are also images of peace and love suitable and recommended for all ages!
In the first part of our presentation I wanted to show Fawn as an androgonistic, militaristic, pompous corporate entity type with no respect for people, money, our flag or our country. We certainly mean no disrespect to our brave soldiers who have served and who are still serving. We empathize with those having difficulty getting the proper physical and mental health care that they deserve. The men and women who serve and have served our country to protect our freedoms are also being discriminated against!
The next portion of the video shows Fawn draped in the rainbow flag representing the LGBTQ+ community and a peace sign tapestry that represents the peace that we wish for all humans. As the rainbow flag and the peace tapestry are removed we see our own American Flag which Fawn wears proudly as a citizen of our amazing and beautiful country.
However, Fawn does not feel as free as what our forefathers had promised us. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness don't seem to be applied equally anymore to all citizens! Sometimes, when you try to exercise those rights, it feels like you keep getting hit over the head with the hammer of discrimination and oppression. Makes you want to scream! If we keep worrying about the differences that we perceive in each other then there will never be peace. We need to grow up. We need to pay more attention to who has control over our lives. We have power and collectively we CAN make a difference!
The cover of Zombie was performed by the talented Tommy Vext of Bad Wolves for which I have no rights. All images captured were in the public domain.
