I opened my eyes, thinking I was waking up, to a sight that wasn’t my room. I looked around the area I was in, trying to make sense of it. My stuff was nowhere to be seen, and the smell was dank and damp. The walls were not square, but rounded rock. I was in a cave. I looked at floor I was laying on, more rock. Now I was freaked out.

‘How did I get in a cave?’ I thought.

I stood up and realized something was wrong. I was still a dragon, but my night clothes were gone. I was naked. Granted still nothing to see but scales, but still I didn’t like it. I walked out of the cave into the daylight. It was quite a sight, the mountains, the hills, the valley, all covered by trees and grass. To top it off, a beautiful blue sky with just the right amount of puffy, white clouds. I couldn’t shake the feeling like this was an illusion, something was showing me this. I don’t like to be played with.

“Okay, nice view.” I yelled, “What do you want?”

“What you want.” said some unknown voice. It seemed to come from everywhere and it defiantly had reptilian tone to it and it was deeper than mine. There even was a underlying growl in its voice.

“What I want is a normal life.” I yelled back, now angry.

“You deny what you have become.” it sneered back.

“I know who I am.” I yelled.

“No, you don’t. You dessssperately hang on to that pathetic human you once were. You fail to realize you are not human and you never will be again. Embrace the dragon that you are and you will be sssstronger then you could possssssibly imagine.” it said, hissing on its s sounds.

“No, I am who I am. Nothing can change that.”

“That’sssss where you are wrong, I can change it.” it growled.

The world went from prefect scenery to a hellish wasteland, filled with smoke, fire and lava. It was from Doom 3, the hell levels.

“Clever,” I said, unimpressed, “using some the images from my video games to scare me.”

“I know thisssss issss one place you don’t want to be, sssso thissss isssss were you will be for the resssst of eternity if you losssse.” it roared.

“If I lose what?” I asked.

“My game.” I said back, “Ssssee. When I took over your body, I got a tasssste of the real world. I liked it and I want to have it all the time. I will erasssse you from your mind and take over. If you believe in hell, thissss issss were you will end up. Then I will be free to do assss I pleassssse.”

I couldn’t stop from laughing. I threw my head back and laughed as harder then I ever did.

“What’ssss sssso funny?” the voice asked.

“It’s just this is so over done.” I said as I regained control, “I must have read hundreds of stories on this. If you want to fight me, be my guest.”

“You accept, excellent. We can begin immediately. I don’t want to wait a minute longer.” it said with a sickening glee.

“Just one catch.” I said.

“And what issss that?” it asked.

“If I win, you get erased.” I said with a smile, “it’s only fair that the stakes are the same for both of us.”

“I ssssaw that one coming,” it hissed out, “fine, I would rather be nothing then live in your mind any longer. Jusssst one thing, you will know when I’m gone.”

“Fine, name the game.” I said.

“Oh, you know it well. Brawl.” it roared, “I like a good fight and you look like eassssy prey. Firsssst one to die, lossssessss.”

As the voice finished that sentence, a huge red dragon descended from the red sky. It looked like a giant, four-legged version of me, it had to be thirty feet long. Only it had two huge black horns growing out of its head instead of my hair. It also had a spike on the end of its tale.

‘I’ll have to watch out for that thing.’ I thought.

“You ready?” the dragon asked.

“You sure you want to do this?” I asked back.

“Oh yea, FIGHT!” it yelled.

It came at me full force, claws and teeth ready to rip me apart. I just remembered what Sam always told me, ‘The smaller the opponent, the faster that opponent is.’ I had to use my speed over that thing’s muscle. I rolled out of the way at the last minute. He missed me by inches. I grabbed his left back leg and climbed up to his back. I began to punch his spine with everything I had. He howled in pain and fell over. But before I could do any real damage, his tail grabbed me by the waist and threw me twenty feet away. I jumped up and he did too. Another fight broke out, he clawed me in the leg and I bit him on the paw. I didn’t have a lot of time; he had more endurance then me. We clashed again and again, each time getting more and more banged up. But my wounds were piling up faster than his, he had more body mass then me.

“You sssssee, you can’t beat me. I have the sssssize advantage. You can’t cause enough damage.” He said as he laughed at me.

“Yea, You have the size advantage, but I have the numbers advantage.” I said.

“What are you talking about?” he asked.

“You never bothered to look into my gaming habits did you?” I asked the very confused dragon.

“I never cared for your wassssteful habitsss.” he said.

“Then you never noticed that I keep all the control schemes in my head. I can go from game to game and remember every control, every enemy spawn point and weakness to each enemy I have ever played. I keep those things in sections of my mind dedicated to that game with a personality fitting to that game. Since this is my head, I think you should meet the other tenants.”

I had thought about this strategy every since I realized what I did with my mind. If my mind was ever invaded, I thought of this to counter. I concentrated on each and every game I ever played and the memories attached to them. I began to drag up the mindsets I get when I played them. The dragon just stood there in horror as people began to pop out of the ground around me. They all looked like the human me because that’s how I think of myself when I played those games, but each one was in a costume that matched the hero of the game I played. There was the Gears me, Rainbow Six Vegas me, Assassin’s Creed me, Halo me, Half-Life me, Doom me, Ghost Recon me, Splinter Cell me, Stubbs the Zombie me (that one was a little gross), Brothers in Arms me, Call of Duty me, Command & Conquer Renegade me, MechWarrior me (bringing my Mad Cat, oh yea), Freedom Fighters me, Fable me, Metal Arms me (a robot me, cool) and Ninja Gaiden me (he was BA). There were even my DnD character Vallen and Scora’ Nuslam from Time Gate.

“How did you manage thisssss?” he asked.

“It’s all in my head, ATTACK!” I yelled.

The army of my different selves attacked with whatever they had, weather it was guns, blades, a giant mech, or festering organs. I lent them a hand as much as I could, but Ninja Gaiden me was carving him up like Thanksgiving dinner. After about three minutes, he was down. His chest was split wide open, but none of my alter egos could harm his heart. I guessed that was for me to do. I walked up to him as he was bleeding out.

“You shouldn’t have done what you did.” I told him.

“Go to hell.” it snarled.

“You first.” I said as I plunged my right claw into the dragon still beating heart.

It screamed and began to vanish. The landscape seemed to change to a forest setting. As the final parts disappeared, I felt a weight lift off of me. It was like I was carrying a really heavy burden and didn’t even know it. I turned to my other selves.

“Thanks guys, I couldn’t have done it without you.” I said with a smile.

They all nodded and faded away, leaving me standing alone in the woods. I was battered and bruised, my scales were cracked and my left arm was badly in need of attention. Despite all that, I was happy. I had defeated that thing that attacked my sister. I noticed my world getting dark, I felt like I was falling. Then I felt the sensation of laying on my bed.

I opened my eyes; I was lying on my stomach. My head hurt so badly. Was that a just a dream, or did that really happen? Did I just fight, literally, for my life? I was about to find out the answer. I looked at my hands; they were still red and scaly with black claws. I tried to get out of bed and immediately fell out of it and made a massive thump. Sam must have heard this and came into my room.

“Eth, you okay.”

“I fell out of bed.” I weakly said.

“You don’t look so good. You look shaky.” she said.

I tried to stand, but I couldn’t balance. I just fell on the bed again.

“I think something’s wrong.” Sam said as she went to get Mom and Dad.

I could not stop think about what the dragon said, ‘You will know when I’m gone.’ Is this what he meant? Then I had it, he must have been the translator that the commands from my human self was run through to control my dragon body. Without him, I would have to learn how to control my body on my own.

“Great,” I said aloud, “start from scratch.”

I struggled to get up; I fought with everything I had. That thing wasn’t going to get the best of me. After a few tries, I was up. If you had something that was doing work for you and you didn’t know, it really sucks to suddenly have to pick up the slack. I carefully propped myself up along the wall and used it to get to my walking cane next to my desk. There’s a sight, a dragon that needs a cane to walk. Using my cane to get a feel for how my legs should move and trying to duplicate the movements I had made before, I walked toward the kitchen. I dragged my tail along the ground. I didn’t know how to keep it elevated and walk at the same time. My wings just hung limply down my back. I was one pathetic looking dragon. If I didn’t have it as a human, I had a hard time controlling it.

Sam, Mom and Dad came up the stairs to find me in the kitchen trying to re-gauge the reach of my arms.

“What are you doing?” Mom asked.

“I had a rather interesting night.” I replied as I grabbed a glass from the cabinet.

“Why do have your cane.” Dad asked.

“I need it to walk.” I replied I used my cane to get to the fridge.

“Why, you could walk just fine yesterday?” he asked.

“Because yesterday, I had help walking.” I said, finally turning to face them.

“What help?” Mom asked.

“That thing that took me over yesterday, that was helping me control my body.”

“What?!” said everyone else in the room.

“That thing was a sort of translation system in my mind that made it possible for me to easily control myself. That’s why it could control me; it was in the driver’s seat. I was just the backseat driver. When it took full control, it liked it. It tried to get rid of me. I beat it and now I have to learn how to control my body on my own.” I calmly explained.

“How did you beat it?” asked Sam.

“It wasn’t pretty, but it’s gone now. That’s all I care about.” I said.

“So you have to learn how to move your body all over again?” ask Mom.

“Yes and I am going to need you guys to help me.” I said.

“How?” asked Dad.

“Anything, I just need to test every muscle I have.”

All Wednesday was spent getting me back to one hundred percent. I put on crappy clothes for this, only my boots, blue jeans and a white T-shirt. Dad put me through the ringer, pull-ups, curls, long runs, bench presses, picking up heavy things with my tail, wing flapping and anything else he thought of.  It took a lot of work, but I had a good idea of how to start. I was running, jumping, breathing fire and flying by nightfall. I was happy to have full control again and now I knew I did. It felt like I could do anything, but I was worn out. I just flopped on the living room floor and laid there. I grabbed the remote off the little table with my tail and turned on the TV, I was quite please with myself. The news was on and they were talking about the attack on me at Beaver Dam.

“Theodore Boston and his associates are in jail tonight after they attacked the red dragon that was seen at the St. Louis Zoo. The attack took place at Beaver Dam State Park. No one was seriously injured and only minor property damage has been reported. The state police released a statement saying that the dragon has the same rights under the constitution because he is a citizen of the United States of America. Any would be dragon slayers would be guilty of murder in the first degree if they killed that dragon. He is to be left alone.” said the news anchor.

“Well, that’s good news.” I said.

After that the phone rang. I got up to get it.

“Hello.” I said.

“Hey man, what’s going on?” asked Pat.

“Nothing special. You?”

“Nothing. I heard about that attack on you, are you okay?”

“I’m fine, fast healer.”

“What happened?”

“Listen man, I really don’t want to talk about it.”

“That’s cool, if you don’t want to talk then we won’t.”

“Thanks, so what did you call for?”

“I was just seeing if you would like to go to the shop with me?”

“The game shop in O’Fallon?”

“Yea, there a 40K tournament and I was wondering if you want to come watch?”

“Sure, I have nothing better to do. Are we taking your car or my truck?”

“I can drive there, but can you fit in my car?”

“I can just get there on my own, when will you be there?”

“About 1:00.”

“Sure, I can be there. Do you want me to bring my Lizardmen?”

“Sure, we can play a little Mordheim before the tournament.”

“That’s cool.”

“Well that’s all I really called about so I’m gonna hop off here.”

“Take it easy.”

“Bye.”

‘Well there was my next day planned.’ I thought.

As I walked to my room, Sam stopped me in the hall.

“Ethan, I want to know what happened in your head last night.” she said.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” I said as I tried to get past her. She blocked me.

“I want to know what happened to that thing that attacked me. I want to know how it died.” There was cold steel in her voice and her hazel eyes matched.

“Are you sure you want to know?” I asked.

“Yes. Tell me.” she said, her words never wavered.

I told her the story from start to finish of what happened. Every detail, every blow. When I got to the part with my different selves, she looked like at me like I was crazy. I finished my story and she just stared at me.

“That as to be the most screwed up fight I have ever heard about. That’s a total anime fight.” she said.

“That’s what happened.” I said.

“I believe you, only you can come up with a move like that.” she replied.

“So, your confidence restored in me?” I asked.

“Yea, I’m glad that thing is dead.” she said as she smiled.

“Me too.” I said with a smile on my face to.

I went to bed and had a great night’s sleep. It felt good to be confident that I was incomplete control of myself again. When I woke up, I did my morning routine and got ready to go to the shop. I had burned enough gas in the Ford, so I thought I would use my wings for a change. I packed my Lizardmen into their box, put them into my backpack with my tape measure, lucky dice and threw on my good outfit. I had to adjust my backpack to fit right, but I got it. I also put my hat in it, I didn’t want it to fly off me.

“Where are you off to?” asked Mom.

“The game shop with Pat.” I replied.

“Haven’t you burned enough gas?” she replied.

“I have, that’s why I am going to fly there.” I said.

“Are you sure you can do that? You never have flown that far before.” she said.

“I have to try sometime, besides it’s not like I can’t stop to rest at anytime.”

“Okay, call us if you can’t make it.” she cautioned.

“I will, I have my phone and fifty bucks.” I said as I walked out the door.

“Be careful!” said yelled.

“I will!” I yelled back.

With that, I took to the sky. I still didn’t like heights, but flying was just so much fun. The wind was blowing my hair and beating against my scaled face. O’Fallon was south, so I flew toward Edwardsville. The view was fantastic; I could see all the little houses. They all looked like my old train models I had when I was a kid. Before I knew it, Edwardsville was I sight. I could see Showplace 12 and Wal-Mart. All I had to do was keep flying till I saw the next city, which was Collinsville. Once I was passed that, the next was O’Fallon.

When I got over Collinsville, I was a little tired. I stopped for a rest in a small park. I landed next to the swing set and sat down under a tree and put my hat on. It was a nice day, not to hot and not to cold. The shade from the tree was pleasant and my sore fight muscles needed a breather. I leaned up against the tree and let the brim of my hat fall over my eyes. I must have sat there for a half an hour before some neighborhood kids came to play at the park. They were racing to the slide and swings so hard, they didn’t see me under the tree. I peeked out from under my hat’s wide brim just enough to see them.

“Ha ha, I win.” said a red haired kid, had to be ten, as he touched the slide.

“No fair, Justin.” said a black haired kid about the same age.

“You’re just a sore loser Kevin.” Justin spat back.

“Jack, come over to the swings, I bet I can get higher then you.” said a brown haired kid to blonde haired kid, obviously named Jack.

“Bill, you’re on.” Jack said back to Bill.

They played for about two minutes before they finally noticed me.

“Hey, Justin, did they put a dragon statue in the park?” said Jack from the swings.

“No, why do you ask that?” asked Justin from the top of the slide.

“Because there’s one under that tree.” he answered.

“Cool, let’s check it out.” said Justin in a very chipper tone.

‘This is going to be funny.’ I thought.

They all ran over to me and I stayed perfectly still. When they got closer, they slowed down to get a better look. Now it was about noon, so there was enough light to make out details.

“Cool, this thing looks so real.” said Bill.

“Why does it have clothes, a hat and a backpack?” asked Jack.

“I don’t know, but he’s cool looking.” said Justin.

“Thank you.” I said which made them all jump back.

I moved my head so my eyes were in full view. I just looked over the shocked group of kids.

“You’re that dragon I keep hearing about. The one on the news.” said Justin.

“Yes, that’s me.” I replied.

“Cool! A real dragon, right here in Collinsville.” said Jack.

“I’m just passing through.” I replied.

“Why are you here?” asked Kevin.

“I needed a rest, flying is hard work.” I replied.

“You flew here, awesome!” said Bill.

“How much longer are you going to stay here?” asked Jack.

“Not much longer, I have to meet a friend in O’Fallon.” I replied.

“Well do you think you could play with us?” asked Justin.

“What do have in mind?” I asked.

“Well, do you think you could play hide n’ go seek?” asked Bill.

“One round.” I said with a draconic smile.

“Okay, you count first. Count to twenty.” said Kevin as they all ran into hiding.

I closed my eyes and began to count as loud as I could.

“…,Nineteen, Twenty! Ready or not here I come.” I yelled.

‘Finding four small children can’t be too hard.’ I thought.

I scanned the area, didn’t see a thing. The place was a clearing in a small woods, not too many good hiding places. Sam and I played this game a lot; I got very good at finding her even without my heightened senses. I sniffed the air and caught the scent of children. One was on my left, two on my right and one right in front of me. I went after the two on the right first. I used my nose to narrow my search. Kevin was in a bush and Jack was lying behind a tree next to it.

“Found you.” I said to both of them.

“Aw, how do you find us so fast?” Kevin asked.

I just tapped my snout and turned to the next closest kid. As I sniffed the air, Kevin and Jack followed me to see how I found them so fast.

“You sniffed us out, like a dog.” Kevin asked.

“Yes, I have a very good sense of smell. I can tell that you have a half eaten piece of taffy in your pocket.” I said with a smirk.

Kevin pulled out an opened Laffy Taffy piece and looked at me to a surprised look on his face.

“Nice going Kevin, you led him right to us.” said Jack.

“I would have found you anyway. Besides, you need a bath.” I said, smiling to myself.

“Hey!” he yelled.

I closed in on the next kid, it was Bill. He tried to cover himself up in under brush, but it didn’t work. Next up was Justin and I could tell right where he was behind the road entrance, near the culvert.

“Found you all, my game.” I said as he looked up at me.

“No fair, you have that nose.” He told me.

“By rules of the game, you’re allowed to use any sense you have. It’s not my fault you challenged a dragon to a game of hide n’ go seek.”

“It’s still not fair.” he said.

“Well, I have to get going or I’m going to be late.” I said as I collected up my things, putting my hat back into the backpack.

“See ya, it was fun.” said Bill.

“Take it easy.” I said as I took off into the sky.

I heard them all yelling “bye” as I ascended into the sky. That was a fun time. I flew over O’Fallon till I spotted the McDonalds and the strip mall where the game shop was. I could see Pat’s car in the parking lot. I looked at my watch on my left wrist, it was only 1:14. Never leave home without it. I landed in the parking lot right in front of the door of the shop. I swung my backpack around in front of me and grabbed my hat out of it. Slipping it on with my left claw, I opened the door with my right, keeping the strap of the backpack on my right arm. Don, the owner of the shop, turned to see who had walked into the store. Don was a big fella with thinning black and gray hair, he is one of the funniest guy I know. He looked a little shocked to see a red dragon walking into a fantasy game store.

“Hi Don.” I said as I walked toward the gaming area, minding my wings and tail.

“Uh, hi.” he said back, “Have we met before?”

I had met Don a while back. I had been to the shop a couple of times, but this was the first time I had been there as a dragon.

“Yes. Ethan, Farm Fresh. Pat’s friend.” I said trying to jog his memory.

“Oh! Man, you’ve changed.” he said.

“Tell me about it.” I said as I walked over to the tables.

Pat was already there, he was painting his Orks.

“Hey man.” I said as he looked up.

“Hey, what’s going on?” he replied.

“Nothing special.” I replied.

Everyone else in the shop just could not stop staring. A red dragon was in a fantasy game shop, this had to a funny looking scene. I sat down in one of the plastic lawn chairs across from Pat and started to unpack my Lizardmen. Coop, one of Pat’s other friends, came over to see what was going on.

“Hey, Pat. You mind telling me why a red dragon just sat down right across from you and you don’t seem to care.” said Coop.

“Hey Coop.” I said with a smile.

“And why it knows my name.” he asked.

“You remember Farm Fresh. Even if you don’t recognize him, you surly remember those red Saurus that beat your zombies into dust.” said Pat without looking up.

“Fresh? Is that you?” he asked.

“In the scales.” I said as finished up putting my Saurus on the table.

“Aw, dude. What happened?” he asked.

I proceeded to tell the story. As I went on, more and more people were listening. I had quite a crowd attending my little story time session. As I finished the story, it seemed I had gotten my points across. That made me feel better.

“And that’s all I have to say about that.” I said doing my best Forest Gump impression.

“Well, that’s tough man. I hope things work out for you.” Coop said.

“I’m sure they will. I think I’m past most of the hard bits.” I replied.

We ended up playing Mordheim. Coop held out with his Grave Guard till Pat’s Chaos Knights got close enough to kick the crap out of them. I was spilt fighting Coop on one front and Pat on the other. I held out for as long as I could, I gave as good as I got. I ended up winning because I captured the most objectives. After that, it was time for Coop and Pat to starting setting up for their 40K tournament. Coop plays Dark Eldar and Pat plays Orks. I don’t play 40K, but if I did I would play Necrons. You just can’t beat ancient Egyptian, space robots. I watched the first round from the other side of the shop, only players are allowed to be near the tables when a tournament is being played. I got tired of that and went to the front of the store and sat down on the cushy chairs next to the chess set. It was about 7:30, so I thought it would be a good idea to get some rest. I pulled my hat over my eyes and got into the most comfortable position I could in the chair. I didn’t fall asleep, but it must have looked like I did. People would just walk by me and say things like,

“Check it out, the dragon’s asleep.”

“Look, a sleeping dragon. I’ll pay you twenty bucks to wake it up.”

“A dragon in a game shop, how cool it that?”

One guy who just walked into the store must have thought I was a display or a statue because he walked over to me a just stared at me. I could see his shoes from under my hat. He walked over to Don behind the counter and said,

“Hey Don, where did you get that awesome red dragon from?”

“I didn’t. He just came in here. I guess he got bored and feel asleep.” Don replied.

“You mean that is a real dragon sitting in that chair?” he asked, his voice was shaking.

“Yea. Don’t poke him.” Don said bluntly.

The guy walked over to several people and asked them about me. They all told him they had seen me awake and moving. I thought it would be funny to move a little just to show him, so I flexed my wings and tail a little and shifted in my seat.

“It moved. Oh jeeze, it moved.” I heard him say.

I couldn’t help myself, I smiled. I was having fun. Pat came over to me and bumped my shoulder.

“Wake up.”

I acted like I just woke up and said,

“Huh, what going on?”

“We’re in round three and we are kicking a**.”

“That’s good.” I said then I faked yawned.

I heard one of the guys say from across the shop,

“Holy s***! Did you see all those teeth?”

“Well, I was coming over to see how you were doing?” Pat asked.

“I’m fine, I just needed a little rest.” I replied.

“Well, I gotta get back to it.”

“Good luck.”

Pat walked back to the tables. I was hungry and McDonald’s was right down the road. I got up out of the chair, much to the surprise of a few new guys, I walked over to the tables. I couldn’t get too close, but I could get close enough to ask Pat if he wanted anything from McDonald’s.

“Get me a Hugo Dr. Pepper.”

“Sure.” I replied.

“Get me one too.” said Coop.

“On my way.” I said as I walked out the door.

As I walked to McDonald’s, I noticed nobody was on the streets. There were cars driving around, but no one was walking. A truck stopped to let me cross in front of him, I could see the shocked expression on the driver’s face. I just tipped my hat and kept going. I walked into McDonald’s and was met by a lot of stares. There was no line to the counter, so I just walked right up to the cashier.

“Welcome to McDonald’s, may I take your order?” she asked, she didn’t look scared of me.

“Yea, I’ll take one Big Mac meal, large, and three Hugoes to go please.” I said.

“Okay, that will be twelve seventy three.” she replied.

“Out of fifteen.” I said as I handed her a ten and a five.

She handed me my change, three empty Hugo cups, a holder and my receipt. I filled up the cups and put them into the holder. I sat down in one of the chairs closest to the counter so when my order came in I could see it. By that time, most people had gone back to what they were doing. A few kept glancing up at me. My order came up and I grabbed it and walked out the door. My food in one claw and the drinks in the other, I walked back to the shop. When I walked through the door, Pat and Coop came and got their drinks. I sat back down into my chair and ate my food. I must have scarffed it down too fast for most people in the shop because they made mention of it.

“Did you see that dragon bite that burger?” said a brown haired guy who was rather tall.

“Yea, I wouldn’t what my hand in there.” said another, lighter, brown haired guy next to him. He was rather short.

I just popped the fries in my mouth one at a time. I like fries. No ketchup, just all fry. After my food was gone, all I had was the Hugo. It was only half full. I just sat in my chair, drinking my Dr. Pepper. Nobody seemed to want to talk to me. I expected that, they didn’t talk to me before. After Pat and Coop had finished their game, them being the winners (team game), we all started to get ready to go home. Pat and Coop walked out to Pat’s car and I followed them.

“Well, I’m glad you came. Sorry it wasn’t more entertaining for you.” said Pat.

“I had fun; I got to play with people at the door.” I said with a smile.

“You were faking that you were asleep?” asked Coop.

“For the most part.” I replied with a smirk.

“Dick.” Coop replied. I chuckled at that.

“Well, I best be off.” I replied.

“Yea, where’s your truck?” asked Pat.

“At home, I flew here.”

“You flew all the way here?” asked Pat.

“Yea, wasn’t that hard.” I replied.

“So, you’re going to fly all the way back home?” asked Coop.

“That’s the plan.” I said.

“Well, good luck Fresh.” said Coop.

“Yea, good luck.” said Pat.

“Thanks, take it easy.” I said as I backed up a little, threw my backpack over my shoulder and jumped into the night sky.

I heard Coop say as I left.

“Jerk, he doesn’t have to waste gas.”

I smiled to myself as I flew north. I was determined to make it all the way home in one go this time. I could see perfectly well at night. All the land marks were there and I made it past Edwardsville with no problems. I was over some farmlands when I felt that feeling of dread in the back of my head. I’m sure if I had hair on the back of my neck, it would have been standing up. Something was about to happen and I was not going to like it. Something big hit me in the chest, it moved so fast. I began to fall, I didn’t want my Lizardmen to get crushed so I pulled my backpack off and held it out in front of me as I tried to regain control. I was able to land in a small stand of trees between two fields. I hung my backpack up in a tree and took out my hat. Something was watching me.
Whatever it was, it was big. I could see a dark shadow moving in the trees.

“Alright, you have my attention.” I said as I slipped on my hat.

“You think you are powerful, don’t you?” it growled. It was clearly the same type of reptilian voice that the dragon in my head had, but it growled more. It was obviously male just by the undertone.

“I never really had to test that theory.” I said.

“Well you are about to be tesssssted then.” it hissed.

The shadow leapt out of the trees and charged at me. It was a dragon, a quadruped dragon with black scales and a dark blue underside. It had two black horns growing out of the top of its head. It had to be twenty feet long and six feet tall. It slashed at me and I dodged its attacks as much as I could while landing a few of my own.

“Come on, can’t I go outside one day and not have something bad happen.” I said.

“You sssshould have fled to the wild like the resssst of ussss. You revealed usssss to the world.” it snarled.

“Wait, what?” I asked.

“When you where turned into one of usssss, you ssssshould have left your human life behind.” it growled.

“That was not something I was going to do.” I said, now angry at him.

“I did. I have never looked back.” it said.

“Well I feel sorry for you then. Your family must miss you.” I said.

“If they ssssaw me now, they would run away from me.” it replied.

“Mine didn’t.” I told him bluntly.

“You jusssst got lucky.” it hissed back.

“Maybe, but you never know if you don’t try.” I replied.

“Ssssshut up!” it snarled as leapt at me.

It bit me on the right arm and I yelled in pain. I drove my fist into its jaw as hard as I could to get it to let go. It did, but it breathed a fire ball at me. I jumped out of the way just to catch a slash across the chest. My coat and shirt to the biggest hit, but I had deep cuts running across my chest. Now I was mad. I came at him with everything I had. I hit an upper cut to its lower jaw and a blow to its left foreleg’s knee. It feel to the ground, but tried to get its tail into play. I grabbed it and used every bit of strength I had to swung the entire dragon around. I spun it around and around till I couldn’t take it anymore and let go. The dragon was sent spinning off into a tree. I was used to spinning; I use to spin Sam like that. I just never let her go. I was a little dizzy, but that dragon was worse off. He had smacked right into a tree, chest first. He had been lucky that there were no branches that could have skewered him, but it did knock the wind out of him along with most of the fight in him.

“Had enough or do you want more.” I said as I walked over to him.

All he did was groan. I had quite the dilemma on my hands. Clearly this dragon wasn’t alone. He had said “one of us.” It was reasonable that there were other dragons out there. Part of me wanted to meet them, but if this was the welcome wagon they sent me, then I didn’t want any part of them. What to do with this one? He was clearly once a human like me, but he had given up his old life. Maybe I could reason with him. Maybe give him back what he had lost.

“Listen, you clearly are confused.” I said, “I really don’t want to fight you. I just want to help.”

“YOU CAN HELP ME BY DYING!” It roared as it stood back up. It charged at me again. I ducked low and wailed on his chest as hard as I could and as many times as I could. That area must have been softened up by the tree because I could feel things break. It roared in pain and feel over. It gagged and struggled to move, I must have broken his ribs. He just laid there. He was still alive, but badly hurt. All I was doing was punching him; I didn’t realize how much damage that did. I didn’t know what to do. I’d hurt him, but I couldn’t help him. If I tried, he would hurt me or others. The only real option I had was to kill him. That way he would not be a threat. But he was not alone, that could have serious repercussions. As I thought this over, I heard a stick snap behind me. I turned to see another dragon standing ten feet behind me. It was a nine foot tall bipedal dragon it was gold all over. It had four horns that where blood red on its head. I braced for another attack, but it just kept standing there.

“I guesssss it wassss only a matter of time.” it said in a very deep reptilian voice with all the hisses and growls I had come to expect.

“What?” I asked.

“Till you met usssss.” he said.

“Great,” I said, “nice welcome.”

“Ssssshow more ressssspect young dragon.” it growled.

“I only show respect to people who have earned it, you haven’t” I snarled.

“I am the oldessssst dragon in the area,” I said, “I am one hundred and thirty years old. I am Ragnic”

“Good for you.” I said sarcastically, “What is the meaning of this.”

“We are here to tesssst you, to make sure you are worthy of the power you now have.” he said.

“Oh, is that all.” I said.

“You passssssed.” he said.

“Oh goody, I’m so happy to be up to your standards.” I replied with a growl.

“Sssstraz here issss our besssst fighter. I am sssurprissssed ssssomeone like you could defeat him sssso eassssily.” he said.

“I’m guessing that Straz is not the name he had before.” I said.

“No, he took a dragon name when he joined our rankssss. Assss will you.” he hissed.

“Not likely. I like my name and I’m going to keep it.” I said with cement in my voice.

“You don’t have a choice in the matter.” he growled.

“Oh, I think I do.” I said with a smirk.

“You will join usssss or die.” he hissed at me.

“Bring it!” I yelled.

He didn’t like that, he came at me claws out and teeth bared. He was fast too. I had to keep moving just to stay ahead of him. I was already wounded far my first fight and I really didn’t want to fight another. I didn’t have much choice though. I ducked and punched at him as much as I could, blocking any strike with my forearms. The thought of what it meant to lose this fight was what kept me going.

“Never give up.”

My parents’ words echoed in my head. I fought as hard as I could, he was tough. I punched at his underbelly at every available moment. Finally I got a good hard one in and he doubled over.

“How can you be that sssstrong?” he asked.

“I eat my vegetables.” I said as I delivered a hammer blow to his head.

He fell to the ground at my feet, unconscious. I had won; I don’t know how I did it. As I looked over the two dragons on the ground, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for them. They had given up; they surrendered to that thing in their head. They had become animals, that was apparent in the way they talked and fought. All growls, hisses, slashes and bites. Sure, they where intimidating, but in reality, they were just confused people. As I was thinking, I felt more eyes on me. I looked up to see dragons of every color standing around me.

“Crap.” I said out loud.

I thought this was the end, I couldn’t fight that many. There had to be over twenty of them. I braced myself, I was going down swinging.

“Calm yoursssself dragon.” said a female reptilian voice.

I turned in the direction of the voice to find a purple quadruped dragon staring at me. She had the most beautiful emerald green eyes I had ever seen. I didn’t allow myself to get caught up in them, this could be a trick.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“We were here to take you in.” she replied.

“I have a home.” I shot back.

“I can ssssee that. It sssseemsss that you do not wisssh to leave it.” she said.

“No I don’t. I have been working hard to restore my life. I’m not going to let anyone ruin it.” I said.

“I undersssstand that. You have fought bravely to defend yoursssself. Sssso in recognition of that, you will be allowed to live assss you pleassse.” she said.

“What?” I asked stunned.

“You have proven to be capable of defending yoursssself and do not need our protection. Ssssso you can return to your life without fear of ussss interfering.” she told me.

“So let me get this straight. You showed up to beat the crap out of me to see if I’m a sissy that can’t defend myself. If I lost, then you would either kill me or drag me to where ever the hell you call home and hold me there. Stripping me of everything I had. Is that what you are telling me?” I asked.

“Yessss.” she hissed, rather annoyed.

“Well I just wanted to clear that up.” I said.

“We will be leaving you now to your life. You will not ssssee ussss again.” she said as they started to back away. Four of them collected up the wounded.

“Somehow, I doubt that,” I said, “but have a nice life anyway.”

“I do have one quesssstion before I go. How come you do not talk like ussss.” she asked.

“You gave into that dragon in your head didn’t you?” I asked.

“That voice told me how to control mysssself. It sssaid if I gave in, I would be sssstronger.” she answered.

“I didn’t, I destroyed it. My parents told me never to give up and I never did. Nothing good can ever comes from giving in to something like that. I didn’t like having anything in my head that I didn’t have complete control over. When it took over me once, it tried to destroy my mind. I ended up destroying it instead.” I told her.

“But how can you control yourssself without it?” she asked.

“It wasn’t easy, but thanks to my family, I figured it out.” I said with a smile.

“You truly are a unique dragon.” she said.

“Thank you.” I said as I tipped my hat.

They all walked out into the field and flew off into the night. It was an awe inspiring sight. If I hadn’t had the crap kicked out me by two of them, I think I would have thought better of them. I took a look at myself. My right arm had deep cuts on the upper arm and a ragged bite wound on the forearm. The sleeve of the coat was just barely hanging on. My left arm wasn’t much better, but it only had cuts. My legs both had cuts along them. My tail had a single long gash on it. My wings were mostly intact, just a few minor cuts. My neck had a big bite mark on it, thankfully not too deep. I could feel scratches across my face. My clothes were rags just barely hanging on me; no way they would survive me flying home. I went to my backpack that was hanging from the tree were I put it. Thankfully, it was never touched. I pulled out my cell phone and called home.

“Hello?” said Mom.

“Hey, it’s me.” I said.

“What happened, did you get too tired?” she asked.

“Not really, Can you come to Midway and pick me up?” I asked.

“Sure, I’m on my way.” she said as she hung up the phone.

I walked all the way to Midway and sat by the water tower till I saw the GMC coming. I waved her down.

“Thanks for coming.” I said as I climbed in. The GMC has a bigger cab than the Ford.
“What happened to you?!” she yelled when she saw all my wounds and torn clothes.

“Two dragons jumped me.” I said in a flat tone, just looking straight forward.

“What?!” she yelled again.

“Yea, they were either going to kill me or capture me.” I said.

“Oh, I’m so sorry.” said she. She looked so sad.

“Don’t worry, I handled it. There will be no more dragons attacking me.” I said trying to reassure her.

“How did you manage that?” she asked.

“Their leader said since I defeated them, I was free to live my life.” I said.

“Do you believe them?”

“Not really, but I don’t have much of choice at this point.”

We drove home. When we got home I told the story to the rest of the family. They couldn’t believe what they heard. The bite marks pretty much confirmed my story. I was so tired, I just passed out on my bed in my torn up clothes. When I woke up Friday morning, I was fully healed and sore as hell. I looked myself over to make sure, not ever a scar. Now I just needed to fix my good outfit. We ended up having to make a new coat. I had to throw out the shirt and pants, but my hat and boots didn’t get a scratch. My new coat was built out of thicker fabric this time, but otherwise, it was the same. It took till dinner time to finish. I put my new outfit on.

“Thanks Ma.” I said.

“No problem. Just try to make this one last longer.” she said.

“I’ll try.” I said with a smile.

Pat knocked on the door and Sam let him in.

“Did Ethan make it home last night?” he asked.

“Yea he did.” she answered.

“That’s good; I just had a bad feeling.”

“Well I guess you had it too.”

“What?” he asked.

“I had the same feeling. I was right and so were you.” she said.

“What happened?” he said as he entered the house.

Then he saw my old coat on the chair in the dining room. It had all the rips and tears on it, with all the blood clearly visible.

“Well, Ethan can tell you better than I can.” she said.

I walked around the corner in my new outfit that exactly looked like my old one; I never really change my looks that much once I pick them.

“Hey Pat.” I said.

“What happened man?” he asked.

“I got attacked by dragons last night.”

“Other dragons? What did they want with you?”

I pick up my old coat and showed off the damage.

“It wasn’t for a nice conversation I can tell ya. They wanted me to join their little nature club. They weren‘t too happy when I said no.” I said.

“Aw man. They really did a number on you.” said as he felt the rips on the sleeves and across the lapel.

“Nothing I couldn’t handle. Besides, they won’t mess with me now.” I told him.

“How can you be sure? They might be mad at you.” he asked.

“The two I beat may be, but the leader gave me her assurances.”

“Her? How many did you see?”

“Over twenty, it was dark.”

“Well I’m just happy you made it out of there alive.”

“I’m happy too; I had my doubts a few times.”

We all sat down in the living room to watch a movie. I went into the game room to look for a good movie. I heard Pat and Sam talking about me in the next room. They were keeping their voices low, but I could still hear them.

“Man, Ethan’s been having tough luck lately.” said Pat.

“You don’t know the half of it.” Sam replied.

“What do you mean?” asked Pat.

“Well what do you want to know?” she asked.

“Well, he wouldn’t talk to me about Beaver Dam.” he said.

I just let Sam talk. She gave Pat the Cliff notes version.

“He attacked you?” Pat said.

“He wasn’t himself.” she said. “I had to do what I did. It was what he had to do after he woke up that he also doesn’t like to talk about.”

“What was that?” Pat asked.

“He had to kill the part of his mind that attacked me.” she said.

“How did he do that?”

“He had a fight in his mind with the thing. It almost killed him.”

“Man.” Pat said as he thought about this.

“It was only his ability to split his mind that saved him.” she said.

“What? How?”

“You ever wonder how he keeps so much information on his games in his head?”

“He always seems to be freaky good at remembering them.”

“That’s because he splits his mind and dedicates that section to just that game. Each part of him can play that game with ease. That’s why he is so good at so many games. It’s sort of like controlled multiple personalities, each one for each game. You get a real good look at it when he goes into zombie mode.” (Zombie mode is when I play a game for hours on end and I’m kept playing it past midnight, I am unstoppable.)

“Wow.” was all he said.

“Well, during that fight. Ethan brought up all those personalities to fight. It’s like fighting Ethan at every game he’s ever played at the same time.” she told him.

“That’s bad for anyone on the receiving end.” Pat said.

“It was, that dragon didn’t have a chance. Ethan stabbed it right in the heart.”

“So now we know for sure he is the only one in there?” Pat asked.

“Yes, he was pretty pathetic the next morning.”

“What do you mean?”

“That thing was a translator for his mind. It allowed him to easily control his body.”
“So without that, he had to relearn how to control everything.” Pat said.

“Yea, he had to walk with a cane at first. It took all Wednesday to get him back on his feet.” Sam told him.

“He seems the same to me.” said Pat.

“You don’t see the differences?” she asked.

“What differences?” he asked.

“Like his wings, he holds them lower and more toward the back then he did before. He also holds his tail lower to the ground and it doesn’t swing as much as it did. He stands up straighter then he did before. He also has his long stride back.”

“I didn’t notice.” Pat said.

“About the most noticeable difference is the leg twitch.” Sam absent mindedly said.

“Leg twitch?” asked Pat.

“Me, my sister and Ethan all used to have the leg twitch. Either the right or left leg would rapidly shake if it was either left idle for too long or we were standing on a ladder. It comes from Mom. When he first became a dragon, Ethan never did the leg twitch. Now that he is in full control again, the leg twitch is back. He was doing it a little while ago, that’s how I know it’s really him.”

“That’s cool, just the little things you notice.” said Pat.

I laid down on the floor and snaked my head out the door along the floor. I kept sliding till I could see them on the couch. I waited till the saw me.

“Hi, I can hear very well you know.” I said.

“Sorry, I just thought I would tell him.” Sam said.

“Its fine, I just don’t like talking about it. I’m not proud of what I did.” I said while still on the floor.

“It’s okay man, I understand way you don’t like to talk about it. It must have been hard?” said Pat.

“It was, but I made it through.” I said, “Now, how about Hot Shots?”

“That sounds good.” said Pat.

“Good enough.” said Sam.

We all sat around and watched movies and did funny commentary on the bad ones. I made my famous pop corn that bites you back.  Salt, butter, salt, butter salt, butter, salt, more butter and butter salt. I’m going to make a cardiologist very happy. We did this till 11:00 at night. We all passed out in the living room, Pat on the couch, Sam on the love seat and me on the floor.
Part 4. This one is a little longer because I did like to break it up to much. Enjoy.

No military response? You think the Government would count finding a living dragon as a Uknown Species and thus want to know more about it. hmm there is no doubt its a conspiracy XD. In my opinion the Government would have evacuated almost everyone within 200 miles of the Dragon and then had a full on bio-mechanized infantry approuch with tactical headsets and a live cam to figure out what the hell is going on. After the confirmed thier target was non-hostile they would probably send in bio-chemists to see if the Dragon made any poisinous chemicals. Then they would interview it (with over 50 .75 cal sniper rifles pointed at its back and several artillery encampments trained on the house) and ask it questions. Then they would put him in a lock-down facility at maximum clearence only.

I just thought up the idea after reading a bunch of other dragon TF stories on DA and none of them when like this which is what I wanted to read. So I wrote it.

Cool, I love that game. ^.=.^

lol. i'm kinda like you. when i don't see an image i want to see, i do it :D
but i just think you should try to write something more than just TF's. they're a little predictable. in the end, you already know whats gonna happen, most of the times :(

about the game: what is your favourite weapon? mine is L.3 Rivet Gun (the sniper with explosive darts) :D

if you like the game, i think you'll like this, [link] , the character was inspired in glitch and a airtrooper :D
