[DEVIATION] Spring Equinox ©️2026 K. Byers, All rights reserved. On a single night at winter’s end, the world holds itself in perfect balance. Not tipped toward shadow, not leaning toward light, but poised, steady, like a breath drawn slowly before speaking. Day and night sit across from one another at the same ancient table, hands folded, finally equal. For one quiet moment the scales of the sky are even. Beneath our feet the earth is waking. Roots stir in their dark cathedrals, stretching fingers through cool soil. Seeds crack open with the soft courage of things that have waited long enough. Sap climbs patiently through the bodies of trees like a promise remembered. Somewhere a bud loosens its tight green fist. I don't know how to live this life. Not exactly. No. Sometimes not at all. All I know is survival. And I do crave calmness and serenity, but I see no way of obtaining it. I forgot how to breathe. Maybe I don't even have to know how. My lungs do a poor job of keeping me present, but at least one of us does it. If it was left to me, I would not know how. I lose myself in deepest thoughts. It took some time and many, many more tears, but Rook finally rose from her bed and walked into her bathroom. She looked in the mirror and found a sad, tear-stained woman looking back at her. She shook her head, walked to shower and for a while she let the hot water wash away her guilt and pain. She then dressed and walked out into the hallway, briefly glancing in the direction of the stairway leading to Solas’s chambers. In a haze, she moved forward to where the desk stood and chairs were tossed to the side. Rook stared at the chairs blankly and didn’t bother righting them; instead, she went into the parlor. A hazy dark storm seemed to stir upon the horizon, and Khepri felt his fur start to stand on end, ears flicking back and forth as he tried to judge just how close it was. He had sensed in the air that perhaps today wouldn’t be the calm sunny day that it had started as, his brother Onuris even seeming on edge, which was rather unlike the smaller buck. They were close to the town of Barsett, crop fields spreading out over miles upon miles, some having been covered in anticipation of what was to come. “Father mentioned a few days ago that there was this… storm coming, I think… he talked about how it was last several days…” Onuris spoke aloud, Khepri twisting a single ear toward him. He wasn’t wrong… he could faintly remember their father speaking of said storm. Though it looked… angry, dark. Threatening. Eddar twisted an ear as he listened to the crowd of Jotun excitedly chattering to one another, while a small group of three or four seemed to stand separately, quietly focused on the two Rukaan that were slowly making their way into the labyrinth. The walls were coated in a thick ice, enough so that Eddar could see his warped reflection, his orange gemstone antlers glittering just as the ice did. Jotunheim was most notable for it’s freezing weather, and tough atmosphere… and he found he couldn’t disagree. Night was starting to fall, alongside the first snowflakes of the evening, already reminding the pair that this was a relentless land, with little reprieve. At his side, Oryx, a plume coated stag with deep bronze antlers and a black and white coat. His tail flicked side to side as he paid attention to the noise that happened around them, trying to hone in on anything that could help them succeed. Cardinal territory was often shrouded away from any kind of human life. Deliberately done so by Corvus so their disturbances were few and far between,e asier to handle, and easier to keep the does separated from other areas that could risk their escape. It was all about separation, isolation. So upon hearing about a new stag and his rider getting close, it sent a ripple through the herd of both excitement and worry. Corvus had decided to check the information out himself, settling at an easy gait through the roots and foliage to reach the edge of the forest territory that they had claimed. It was Parakeet that had told him, and whilst he didn’t disbelieve one of his most trusted allies, this was too big a risk to send really anyone else. This was utter madness. Utter. Madness. This sapiere simply was not a normal creature of flesh and blood, but of magic and solidified evil. There was no other explanation for the way the beast kept after him, ignoring every wound like it wasn't even there. On and on it chased him; no matter how far Eluen flew in that featureless desert, the sapiere ALWAYS caught up. And now, he was exhausted. Absolutely, totally, exhausted. For the umphteenth time, the stalker landed, panting, on a high dune, wings drooping, tail dragging. This... this is where he would make a stand. Either the grand sapiere will go down, or he will. No other options. He was DONE running.... flying. Whatever. And there it was; the sand cloud that signaled the sapi's arrival. Alright, this was it. One. Last. Stand. Like a mindless raging bull, the sapiere charged, stopping for nothing in its way, leaving bleached bones tumbling it it's wake when it plowed though an ancient nondescript skeleton.

Wow... what a beautiful sunset! Ryn was out on the plains, close to the edge of the forests. With her was Tepo, the gentle bull Ceratonoth. It was evening, and the daytime sounds of the prairies were just about to give way to the voices of the night. For a few moments, as Ryn sat there on the ground against the ceratonoth's chest, it was silent - daywalkers settled down and slept, while the nightroamers hadn't yet begun to stir from their slumbers. Then, in a whisper that rose to a clamorous symphony, insects of all flavors tuned their wings and started their collective chorus. It was hot. Much too hot. Sure, midsummer in the desert was by definition toasty, but this - it hasn't been quite this hot in as long as Eluen could remember. Which made this battle all the more miserable. The stalker both wished he had, and was glad he did not have, sweat glands like those squishy little humans. Eira bent to remove her shoes. She cut down Alaric’s hanging corpse, then she began to dance. She sang the song to rouse the dead, and quickly, Alaric’s body rose like a puppet on a string. As Eira danced around the clearing, she beckoned the corpse to follow suit. It did, a gruesome sight with its purple face still dressed in priestly garb. Eira giggled, and sang on as she twirled around the fire. As we dance around this fire Let this be a funeral pyre For the mother who died for me For the life that was not to be For all the lives my father stole For every act that damned his soul For deeds from which he can’t atone I offer up his flesh and bone! At these words, the corpse danced straight into the blazing fire, and immediately caught alight. It twisted and flailed in the flames, but did not move from them. As Eira watched, the flames consumed the corpse, reducing it to ash and bone fragments. She stopped dancing then, and threw dirt over the fire, dousing it. No one would find

Early the next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Alaric went to visit Gwen one final time. For her impending execution, he wore white robes to show his purity and holiness. The irony made him chuckle as he unlocked the shed. Inside, he found Gwen slumped against the wall, sound asleep, with a faint smile on her face. Perhaps she was dreaming of more pleasant times. Then he noticed that she wasn’t holding the baby in her arms, as she usually was. He looked around. The shed was small, with no place to hide anything, even something as small as an infant. Where was the baby? The door had been locked, and he had the only key. Where could it have gotten to? He reached down and grasped Gwen’s shoulder, roughly shaking her awake. Eira bent to remove her shoes. She cut down Alaric’s hanging corpse, then she began to dance. She sang the song to rouse the dead, and quickly, Alaric’s body rose like a puppet on a string. As Eira danced around the clearing, she beckoned the corpse to follow suit. It did, a gruesome sight with its purple face still dressed in priestly garb. Eira giggled, and sang on as she twirled around the fire. As we dance around this fire Let this be a funeral pyre For the mother who died for me For the life that was not to be For all the lives my father stole For every act that damned his soul For deeds from which he can’t atone I offer up his flesh and bone! At these words, the corpse danced straight into the blazing fire, and immediately caught alight. It twisted and flailed in the flames, but did not move from them. As Eira watched, the flames consumed the corpse, reducing it to ash and bone fragments. She stopped dancing then, and threw dirt over the fire, dousing it. No one would find

Early the next morning, just as dawn was breaking, Alaric went to visit Gwen one final time. For her impending execution, he wore white robes to show his purity and holiness. The irony made him chuckle as he unlocked the shed. Inside, he found Gwen slumped against the wall, sound asleep, with a faint smile on her face. Perhaps she was dreaming of more pleasant times. Then he noticed that she wasn’t holding the baby in her arms, as she usually was. He looked around. The shed was small, with no place to hide anything, even something as small as an infant.
