Near-endless golden fields stretched far and wide beneath the blazing sun high up in the sky, the tall savanna grasses whispering in long, rippling waves whenever the wind managed to stir the heavy heat. The air itself nearly seemed to shimmer, bending the horizon into a mirage of distant water that never truly existed. Scattered acacia trees stretched thin, crooked branches like skeletal hands clawing at the sky, offering only meager patches of shade to anything fortunate, or desperate enough to find them. And the young griffin Yukito had been out since sunrise. He had moved carefully through the grass, pale feathers catching the rising, harsh sunlight so brightly they almost seemed to glow. His pinkish eyes darted from plant to plant, scanning for anything remotely useful. A small satchel hung from his side, already half-filled with bundles of leaves, roots, and odd-looking seed pods tied together with thin strands of fiber. He paused at a low-growing plant with dark, waxy leaves.

“What the heck are you doing?” The question rolled through the quiet clearing like distant thunder. It came from a vast, black shape curled beside the dying embers of last night’s fire. His scales drank in the dim blue of early dawn. One golden eye cracked open, then the other, narrowing at the figure already moving about the camp. Yukito froze mid-motion, a wooden spoon clutched in his talons. He turned, feathers catching the faintest hint of morning light, and offered a sheepish smile. “Sorry, Mephisto. Didn’t mean to wake you.” The dragon, Mephisto, let out a long, rumbling grunt, halfway between annoyance and exhaustion. His wings shifted as he stretched, the membranes creaking softly like old leather. When he yawned, rows of dagger-like teeth flashed in the half-light, accompanied by a low, grumpy rumble. “It’s barely morning,” he muttered, his voice still thick with sleep. “The sun’s not even properly up yet. He had sensed in the air that perhaps today wouldn’t be the calm sunny day that it had started as, his brother Onuris even seeming on edge, which was rather unlike the smaller buck. They were close to the town of Barsett, crop fields spreading out over miles upon miles, some having been covered in anticipation of what was to come. “Father mentioned a few days ago that there was this… storm coming, I think… he talked about how it was last several days…” Onuris spoke aloud, Khepri twisting a single ear toward him. Eddar twisted an ear as he listened to the crowd of Jotun excitedly chattering to one another, while a small group of three or four seemed to stand separately, quietly focused on the two Rukaan that were slowly making their way into the labyrinth. The walls were coated in a thick ice, enough so that Eddar could see his warped reflection, his orange gemstone antlers glittering just as the ice did. Jotunheim was most notable for it’s freezing weather, and tough atmosphere… and he found he couldn’t disagree. Night was starting to fall, alongside the first snowflakes of the evening, already reminding the pair that this was a relentless land, with little reprieve. At his side, Oryx, a plume coated stag with deep bronze antlers and a black and white coat. His tail flicked side to side as he paid attention to the noise that happened around them, trying to hone in on anything that could help them succeed. Teppi watched the sea intently as the waves crashed against the cliffside of Brekkathorpe, the ruins standing guard on the very edges of the rock. It was scenic, in only the best way, the grey stone accented by the bursts of colors from the flowers that bloomed this time of year, covering field after field after field. There was plenty to eat, plenty to see and a good time to lounge around before moving on once more in the migration. Teppi stood close to his friend, Lifu, as the pair watched the sun slowly sink toward the horizon, turning the skies a brilliant pink, fading to a purple. This was utter madness. Utter. Madness. This sapiere simply was not a normal creature of flesh and blood, but of magic and solidified evil. There was no other explanation for the way the beast kept after him, ignoring every wound like it wasn't even there. On and on it chased him; no matter how far Eluen flew in that featureless desert, the sapiere ALWAYS caught up. And now, he was exhausted. Absolutely, totally, exhausted. For the umphteenth time, the stalker landed, panting, on a high dune, wings drooping, tail dragging. This... this is where he would make a stand. Either the grand sapiere will go down, or he will. No other options. He was DONE running.... flying. Whatever. And there it was; the sand cloud that signaled the sapi's arrival. Alright, this was it. One. Last. Stand. Like a mindless raging bull, the sapiere charged, stopping for nothing in its way, leaving bleached bones tumbling it it's wake when it plowed though an ancient nondescript skeleton.

Lightning crashed with the force of a thousand sledge-hammers, shattering granite just inches away from the sapiere's snarling face. The blue dragon lunged, but the grey lightning-spitter beat her wings and ducked out of the sapi's reach. The battle had been going on for what felt like hours, though it couldn't possible have been more than a few minutes since the blue, brown, and white grand sapiere dropped out of the low cloud cover practially on top of the silver and grey stalker. Luin, the stalker in question, had only barely avoided the long, sharp raking talons, and now was hard-pressed to keep from suffering a great deal of damage at the fangs of the grand. Two breaths this sapiere had. TWO. And those two just had to be poison and radiation - the two nastiest breaths dragons could own, in Luin's humble opinion. At the least, her lightning countered the sapiere's firepower quite nicely... a small comfort when the beast had at least half-a-thousand pounds on her. Most

Okay, this was getting insane. Apparently grand sapieres just didn't know how to stay down. Or die. Or, well, anything but fight. And fight. And fight. And then fight some more. Eluen had never, never seen anything take this much beating, and still keep on keeping on. The fight had progressed from the stinging sands to an oasis, mainly because he knew it was there, and he needed to wash this burning poison off his hide.. and the sapiere of course followed, dogging every flap with it's unreal terrestrial speed - since, you know, it couldn't fly anymore. Once the oasis came into view, the stalker knew he had precious few moments before the sapiere caught up. Folding his wings, the wyvern dove into the cool water, almost sighing with relief as the fluid washed away the grime and soothed the burned spots all over his wings and back. It felt so very good... is this what those tame pansies felt when their riders (a human riding a wyvern.. how wrong was that?) rubbed that

The battle had been going on for what felt like hours, though it couldn't possible have been more than a few minutes since the blue, brown, and white grand sapiere dropped out of the low cloud cover practially on top of the silver and grey stalker. Luin, the stalker in question, had only barely avoided the long, sharp raking talons, and now was hard-pressed to keep from suffering a great deal of damage at the fangs of the grand. Okay, this was getting insane. Apparently grand sapieres just didn't know how to stay down. Or die. Or, well, anything but fight. And fight. And fight. And then fight some more. Eluen had never, never seen anything take this much beating, and still keep on keeping on. The fight had progressed from the stinging sands to an oasis, mainly because he knew it was there, and he needed to wash this burning poison off his hide.. and the sapiere of course followed, dogging every flap with it's unreal terrestrial speed - since, you know, it couldn't fly anymore. Once the oasis came into view, the stalker knew he had precious few moments before the sapiere caught up. Folding his wings, the wyvern dove into the cool water, almost sighing with relief as the fluid washed away the grime and soothed the burned spots all over his wings and back. It felt so very good... is this what those tame pansies felt when their riders (a human riding a wyvern.. how wrong was that?) rubbed that

Notebooks scatter, cluttering a desk that’s been a mess for months. A Laptop that cost seven hundred dollars—four to five documents open, all empty spaces. Wheels stutter over a bump, caught by the carpet, as she stands up. She leaves the chair there, pointing toward the door for when she’s ready to come back. Engine, headlights on, P shifts to R to D. Norwalk. Street lights, green, yellow, red. Street lamps, on, flickering, dead. Nava Street, her best friend’s old house. She doesn’t stop to look in the rearview, he’s not living anymore.
