One night, a rainstorm battered the roof and sides of the house, scaring Rien and his siblings awake. Rien sat up in bed, his ears flat against his head. Espree covered her ears, trying to block out the sounds of the rain pounding on the window and the thunder rumbling through the sky. Rhys huddled under the blankets, shaking. Crysti clung to her plush fox, near tears. After a minute, Rien straightened up and forced a smile, trying to look confident for his younger siblings.
"It's okay, guys. It... It's just some rain. It'll go away soon and everything will be fine..." he said, trying to sound convincing.
KRA-KOOOOM!
Thunder roared and lightning flashed, filling the bedroom with blinding light akin to a flashbang grenade going off. Crysti squealed in terror and Rhys nearly rocketed off his bed like a startled cat.
"MAMAAAA!" Espree cried out, clinging to her pillow in fear.
In a matter of seconds, Katie and Fritz came rushing into the kids' bedroom. They were met with all four of their children in various stages of fear; Crysti full on crying, Rhys frozen stiff with his back arched like a cat, Espree near tears as she trembled visibly while clinging to her pillow, and Rien looking intently at the window as if expecting something to come crashing through it.
"Oh, babies, it's okay. It was just some thunder and some lightning," Katie said, stepping further into the room.
"Zhere's nozhing to be afraid of," Fritz said, following after her.
"B-But..." Espree began, unable to get any more words out.
Katie sat on the edge of her bed, prying her hands off the pillow.
"It's not going to hurt you, sweetheart," Katie said reassuringly.
"Precisely. All of you are safe here," Fritz said, picking Crysti up out of her crib and holding her close to soothe her.
"D-Do we have a lightning rod on the roof? Uncle D-Dell said that those can keep houses from catching fire after getting hit by lightning?" Rhys asked, finally relaxing somewhat.
"We don't need a lightning rod, dear. There's a saying that goes 'Lightning never strikes twice.' We'll be okay," Katie said.
"But what if our house does get struck by lightning??" Espree asked, terrified.
"Zhere is a very high chance it von't, Espree. You're getting yourself all vorked up," Fritz said, still holding Crysti.
Espree fiddled with the hem of her blanket, still nervous. Rhys sat down on his bed, also looking pretty nervous.
"Mama?" Rien finally peeped.
"Yes, Rain?" Katie said, looking at him.
"Were... Were you ever scared of storms?" Rien asked.
Katie glanced at Fritz before looking back at Rien. She then went over to his bed and sat on the edge of it, her hands in her lap.
"I was only scared if the storm had a genuine cause for concern. This, though? This is just a typical rainstorm. It will pass and nothing will happen to us," she explained.
She then turned to Espree and Rhys.
"Plus, think of all the flowers that will grow and all the puddles you can splash in afterwards," she continued, smiling.
"Yeah! We could go puddle jumping tomorrow!" Espree said, her mood immediately improving.
"Yeah!" Rhys agreed.
Fritz and Katie chuckled. While the mood in the room seemed to improve, Rien still looked down.
"I... I don't know if I can go back to sleep, mama..." he admitted softly.
Katie stroked his hair comfortingly.
"Would you like me to sing you to sleep like I did when you were younger? Would that help you feel better?" she asked.
Rien nodded.

Katie smiled, standing up and picking up Rien's blanket by the hem. Rien laid back against the pillows and Katie tucked him in.
*Katie singing*
"Dream by night, wish by day, love begins this way...
Night's a friend with love to send each new day...
Bless you heart, bless you soul, let your dreams come true...
Future songs and flying dreams wait for you...
Love it seems made flying dreams so hearts could soar...
Heaven sent these wings were meant to prove once more that love is the key..."
*Fritz puts a now fast asleep Crysti back into her crib as Katie tucks Rhys and Espree into bed while still singing*
"As you wish, as you will...
Dream a flying start...
Love and care, the power's there...
Trust your heart...
Trust your heart..."
Fritz and Katie start to leave the room, pausing at the doorway to look back at the kids. All of them had fallen fast asleep with Crysti and Rien even holding their respective plushies. Satisfied with what they see, the couple quietly slip out of the bedroom.
"You're a vonderful mozher, mein Schatz," Fritz said softly.
Katie smiled and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"Thank you, hun," she said softly.

Sprunki - Lullaby for a Stormy Night
My Lullaby Ft. Q-Bee's Hive
sneak peek for The Sad Origin of Spooky Ghostly
After a pretty bad rainstorm scares the kids, Rien asks Katie if she could sing them a lullaby to calm their nerves.

Got super inspired after the "Flying Dreams" song from the movie "The Secret of N.I.M.H." started whirling around in my head at work yesterday. Immediately thought up this little story that matched Katie's relationship with the kids perfectly and the song was just the cherry on top. I plan to do something with the version performed by Paul Williams soon.
