Personality
[ Good-humored | Straightforward | Upbeat || Bookworm || Heedless | Obstinate | Perfectionist (fussy) ]An entertainer, a dabbler in what could be considered art if not magic. Rayne’s conversations, when speaking with clients, are good natured with a few jokes thrown in then and there to keep the mood light. They are optimistic, cheerful. Even in the face of the most dreadful of circumstances, there is a way to find the light. Not to say that the girl won’t be honest, however. If the going will be tough, she isn’t afraid to let someone know. She might sugar coat it a little, even offer to aid them along their way should the cards read they will need a helping hoof, but the truth is something not even she can hide.
Some might whisper that she is eccentric. A witch among the commoners, dressed in fabric as them and wearing a bridle at they do. Of course, no one actually believes that the young girl is a witch. She’s merely fascinated with magic, the future. Books line her shelves and from time to time hide her nose when she is caught up with one into the late hours of the evening in coffee shops where she’s lost track of time.
A stubborn girl, some may find Rayne to be an obstacle within their path when she refuses to move. She can tend to be reckless, careless, with herself. Before others, in front of those that she cares about, she would throw herself and stand in their place, unwilling to allow anyone to see them harmed. Thankfully not much trouble brews in Aodh - as long as no scoundrels attempt to thieve goods from her friends or family.
Where this flaw may be seldom shown, it is perhaps her need to be and to have everything perfect that stands out most of all. She is picky with her craft, particular about the way cards are set and how ash must be settled in a bowl. Her books are tidy, not a volume out of place, and dirt she sometimes crinkles her nose over unless her cares are thrown to wind.
History
[ Pre-Group History ]Every story begins somewhere.
They’d been friends for a year or two, everyone at a young age lost count when they attended parties or musical events held in the city, that had met through their connecting circle of friends. For Dougal and Christina, the thought that the other could like them had been put far from their minds until they’d grown closer. It’d been one night hanging out, one night by the entertainers and the streets lit by fire, that they dared to test new waters. It hadn’t been love at first sight, no, yet what they’d had was something they could swear they had never known and felt before.
Their love continued to grow by the day. After being told that Christina could likely not have children of her own, they’d accepted such knowledge and had moved on with their lives. They’d gone on walks along the beach, worked to earn money that they could sometimes spend on the other in the form of gifts or time away from the busy city. Their wedding wasn’t planned until the following year, but a bump in their road had appeared - or perhaps Christina's side was more accurate. They’d been surprised, overjoyed at the idea of Christina being pregnant when they had believed it was something not in their future. They were going to have a child, and as such their beautiful wedding was moved up sooner than either of them had expected for the child that would be born in the months to come.
She arrived late one summer night, born into the waters of a birthing pool her mother had insisted they have for the birth of her firstborn. She’d been so small when she’d been born, so little nestled between her parents when they had cleaned and dried her. Rayne, they had called her. For no particular reason other than that it was a name both of them liked for their new little girl.
As a child, she had grown up no less than their princess. From the time she’d been able to get to her hooves, she’d been her father’s baby. Everywhere he went, until it was time for him to go to work or to return to the barracks, she followed. Babbling, giggling, until words had formed the more she grew. She was curious of the world, poking her nose where it did not belong.
A gut instinct, a natural knowing, had followed the girl throughout her early life. She’d known when her mother had again fallen pregnant, excited the day she’d bounced through the doors after playing with her friends and the announcement had fallen from her lips. Clairvoyance, as it was no doubt such a thing, had “run” on both sides of the families for generations. It could skip a generation or two, depending on whether or not the parents took the time to pray to the goddess Cascade, but there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the daughter had been blessed by the mother of the sea. Had the sea goddess foreseen something in the child while they had prayed to her among the others for a healthy baby before Rayne had been born?
This gift of hers, this blessing, flourished as she grew into a teenager with little boundaries. Her home had filled with two other siblings, a girl and a boy, who she helped to tend to when she was not running or flying elsewhere. The sky she’d fallen in love with, nothing more free than the wind beneath her wings, and it was Cascade’s sea that she was always drawn to to splash in the waters or relax on the sands where she could still hear the waves gently tug and pull.
It was her blessing that sparked an interest in magic, in the future. She gathered cards, she collected books. Her life, when her stomach was too weak to handle the job her mother went to every day and she was not a fighter at heart as her father was a protector over the city and his family, had found a purpose. To others, she would give their fortunes of the future.
In the city of Valore, entertainment came in all shapes and sizes. A teenager who read from cards or burned a piece of wood until it turned to ash that would give away the future? Adults had laughed, shaken their heads, but still tossed coin her way when she’d at first set up on the Gilded Bridge as if she’d been a merchant herself. They’d humored her, toyed with her, until some began to find her tellings to be true. Her gut never lied, did it?
By the age of twenty-one she was able to purchase a proper shop, however small it might be. It stood on the corner of the street and she filled it with everything she desired: books, a reflection of the stars on the ceiling. Incense drifted through the air, plants in pots or hanging from delicate string. Her shop became a place of wonders, of the mystic. She was an entertainer at heart with as much of the truth as she could give to others that wandered past.
It was the least she could do when the tough world outside came inside the city walls, shaking everyone to their core and making the future unseeable. Why not make someone else smile through the trying times the people had to face, distract them from their troubles with hope for a brighter day?
Where her story goes, or where it will end, is unknown.
