When a Godzilla movie doesn't sit well with critics, we G-Fans know otherwise. There are some Godzilla films that didn't do well like 1998, KOTM, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah and some other Japanese ones. But to me, a different kind of G-Fan, the three words "box office bomb" usually mean "criminally or heavily underrated" to me. The same applies for other films unless they deserve that title.)
I know that 1998 wasn't the best Godzilla, but it deserves some real dadgum credit. It introduced Godzilla to the United States. (Not counting Godzilla KOTM 1956, when an American reporter went to Japan to witness it all rather than the monster coming to America.) Even though it didn't look like Godzilla, it deserved credit as the first American Godzilla film.
Godzilla KOTM (2019) was a true Godzilla film. Critics call it unoriginal. They deemed it a failure, but us G-Fans sure as fire know better. Godzilla showed us his true power. When I watched it, I saw the power of BELIEF. I saw a new Godzilla with the might of his predecessors from various films, rise above every Titan or Kaiju thrown at him and living up to his title as "King of the Monsters." In Godzilla KOTM 1956, it was just a name to get people's attention, but in 2019, Godzilla LIVED UP to that title.
He saved humanity from the MUTOs that could have inflicted toxic damage on them, he stood against Ghidorah and Rodan without fear or surrender, and he spared the fallen Kong after his battle and again after acknowledging him after they destroyed Mechagodzilla. A true king knows an enemy when he sees it and he knows when he has won. Godzilla is a true king and in this G-Fan's (me) opinion, the greatest monster in the world.
Godzilla's courage, strength, intelligence, symbiosis with Mothra and ultimately, his heart, is how he brought Ghidorah to his knees. His heart is towards all creatures on the planet. He fought for them, risked his every breath, possibly even sacrificed himself to preserve the peace. (Serizawa did say he died for them, so it's quite possible).
Godzilla and Mothra in the Monsterverse, are the best Kaiju couple I've seen. (Aside another equally good Titan OC, Moonhidora). I was disappointed when I found out that Mothra's relationship with Godzilla was symbiotic, I actually expected romance. No joke.
In the Toho films, Godzilla and Mothra are always squaring off against each other, besting one another and generally having hostile relationships. In the Monsterverse versions of Godzilla and Mothra, they are on good terms and hold nothing against each other. The symbiotic relationship in my opinion is not symbiotic, but rather a true friendship. I could only imagine that friendship evolves into a true love. (I ship it 3,000 times 1227 times 976 times 260).
Leave your thoughts below. No flames. And remember, when a Godzilla film doesn't do well with critics, us G-Fans know otherwise.
