Burning Rose - amber reverse engraving - Intaglio by fairyfrog Burning Rose - amber reverse engraving - Intaglio by fairyfrog
Kill your darlings! :D

This started as a regular-tinted piece of amber. A pale yellow topaz.
I heated it, engraved the motif, burned it a little, scorched it, set it on fire (whoops!), filed down the front and now I know how to darken to amber and make "windows" in it, to get paler roses than before, and how to tint parts of them to cognac.. Levelup! :D

30 x 20 mm, brooch-to-be.

I heard you usually boil it in oil to get it darker. I used indirect heat instead, from the torch.
Natural amber got a quite pale yellow tint before treated, usually.

ooh thats really interesting, i was under the impression different trees different colour but it makes much more sense for the amounts of dark amber you see in shops

That is true as well. Dominican amber got a blur tint under blacklight. Baltic amber is green, and japanese mber is purple. There are many variations but the most commonly used is the baltic one and here in Sweden that's the easiest to get hold of. I have a fine piece of Dominican as well, that will be made into something special.
