Autumn rose pendant by fairyfrog Autumn rose pendant by fairyfrog
My first intaglio necklace.

Hand engraved amber set with a very thick hammered bezel frame in sterling silver.
Made for a customer to be given to her mother-in-law, a Berber woman. Wow. No pressure.

I tried to make it contemporary and solid and still use some of the traditional Berber jewelry as inspiration.

Awww! It would be an honor.
I do make these and I am just getting started with this technique. If you have a look at my most recent journal, or even better, my Intaglio gallery (folder at the bottom of my general gallery) you can see some samples of what i can do. ;)

It's a natural baltic amber cabochon. hardness 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale, where Diamond is a 10.

Thank you so much for taking an interest in my Crafts! :)

Thank you for the answer! :iconflowerheartplz: First of all I thought it's a dried real rose covered by amber-like resin :D So this is a reverse engraving? And you do it by hand? :wow: You have golden hands then

If you check my latest journal I got an entry where I tell the background to what it is and how I do it, along with the progress I made!

It's done with a small hand tool (milling machine)with tiny exhangeable bits. (Dremel like) It's done from the backside where you push the tool in, cut out bits from the back and check the front for what's going on! :)

Here is the entry, if you're interested:

This is beautiful! Roses are one of my favorite motifs and amber is one of my favorite stones. So the marriage of the two just guarantees that I'll love it. I own a lovely little cross pendant with a intaglio rose carved into the amber. Up until now, I've never seen anything else like it. I'm glad I found you!

This is great! I love your Deviantart page, it is really nice to see jewelry workers on here that actually make all of their pieces beginning to end. So tired of seeing people just put pre-made things together!

You are fantastic :)

Thank you so much. I take great pride in making jewelry from scratch and I agree with you. I even feel like "It isn't my doing, I only assembled it!"

Whenever there is a piece I didn't do all the work myself. Certain rings with advanced set stones for instance, or when I made a wax model and sent for casting. I don't like taking the full credit for such things. Doesn't seem right.

I wish I could cut all my gems, set all my stones and cast all my (few) models myself.. but I don't have the time, skill and machinery. Yet. Heh. ;)

Totally agree! It is a lot of work and it takes a lot of equipment to do everything on your own. I'm fortunate to go to a really great college where our Crafts facilities are well kept with almost all of the amenities. If you're doing things on your own it gets so much more complicated ^^;

I really do love your work though, I get excited when it shows up on my notifications! Keep up the amazing work :)

I sometimes miss the well-stocked school workshop as well.. Stay after hours if you are allowed and use it to the max! You won't regret the hours spent there later, rather the things you _could_ have made once you can't use the facilities any more. ;)

Thank you so much, means a lot!

I got a couple of cabochons I'm planning to sculpt and mount. I'm in love with the technique and there will be a lot more elaborate things than this.

Best way to make me do more is to commission one. That way I can do it as part of my job instead of trying to find time for it as a personal free time project. ;)

I shall keep that thought in the back of my head. Monies are a bit tight right now - remodeling a couple of rooms - but when things get back to abnormal again, real good chance I will be contacting you with a commission. Unless you, in the mean time, come up with something else I am equally enamored of; in which case it will be two commissions.
