Comission for *SpikesStables
of her beautiful Nordanner mare SS Indian Blanket 1658

actually this was supposed to be a fullbody with no/simple bg....but since this seems to be the best digital horsepainting I ever did so far, I thought it'd deserve a better looking BG ^^
so I played around with several brushes and that came out :D
hmpf...PROBABLY I'll never be able to paint an image like this again DD:

First full digital painting I did with Photoshop Elements...and after a...few xD difficultes with starting, I really enjoyed working with this programm...especially with the fur brushes I downloaded ;P They're so awesome! :la: I mean....look at that hair structure (so much better than with Gimp!)

Colouring the greyscale is really different than doing that with Gimp...so unfortunately her colour is not 100% correct...but I hope you don't mnd :'D
...have to practice xD

I also made the original file far too big...(next time smaller x)
so while I am currently writing this the file's saving >.< (hours later...it's STILL saving xD...get's boring)

and seriously: not traced, just had the ref photo opened in an extra window and was staring at it :D

This is beautiful. I just love how the colors go together. It really does look like it has a blanket over it :D The way you painted it is very pretty, and it almost glows and glimmers when you look at it long enough, haha. What breed is this horse? Very beautiful with the white face and crystal blue eyes. The eyes are almost sapphire to me haha. I like the long mane around the hooves and how the tail flows around, almost like waves from the sea. The background is very good too.

I love the season, Winter is my favorite :D

Well done on this piece, and I hope this was a good critique

I find this piece to be very exceptionally breathtaking. It is simple and elegant, yet is full of details which I am still discovering even after looking over it in these last several minutes. The anatomy of pleasing, the way the muscles are contracted and extended, the way the joints and the wrinkles hit the light, and how that lighting follows the curves and the dips of the horse's body. The mist also adds a nice touch of realism to the cold and snowy landscape that lies in the back round. Well done. You've got yourself another favorite and follower.

I rather like this piece. I love the realism, the detail (mist from his nose, the eye is fantastic). However, I'm not such a hufe fan of the background. Though I often fall to this crime, i don't like the over use of brushes in the background. It looks hurried and like it doesn't belong with the horse. While it effectively makes the horse stand out, I feel as if it detracts a bit. I rather like the line of trees through the middle though. I would have used more natural brushes to make the ground and sky a bit more real.

For the horse, I love your attention to detail. The hindquarters, legs, and chest are astounding. You go into detail without overwhelming the piece, which can be difficult. The only thing I dislike is the shoulder. I feel that, in attempting to highlight so much, you lost a lot of the shape to it, like you have pictured so well in the rest. The highlights run into each other. I suggest going back and either dimming some of the lights, or adding some darker tones to it.

Very lovely piece. It speaks well, and your attention to natural detail is to be applauded.

oh wow, this is seriously one of the longest critiques I ever got...!

thanks^^
well..I actually planed doing only a flat one colour background, but since the horseimage seemed to deserved more, I came up with this resolution
but I guess you're right...the bg could definately be better ^^;

hmh...right again :/ highlights are not that easy to set correctly. I'll try to do better here next time! :)

I am really glad to hear so!
and thanks for this great critique!

I stared at this a good few minutes before I finally found something to critique, and it still feels like I'm being overly picky |D

Nevertheless; although the mane and tail are really gorgeous, they feel a little less real than the rest of the horse. I'm guessing you use a custom brush of some sort to work on it, and it looks great as a base, but it might help your cause to go back in with just a default brush and do a little extra detail work. In the mane particularly the edges seem to almost follow a pattern instead of being caught randomly in the wind. Going back over and thickening some areas and thinning others would help.

The shading is gorgeous otherwise, especially in the white sections. I'm so jealous!

The background feels a little bit flat- maybe slightly less texture and a shadow under the horse might help.

Overall really stunning, color me impressed!

Another amazing piece from you! *goes to watch you :XD:. I really love how much detail you put into the horse, and the minimal detail in the background really adds to the piece. The back far leg... it seems like you overlooked it, it's a straight line between the marking and the rest of the coat :P. Your anatomy is perfect, I really love this piece! Job well done :)

I think this is really gorgeous. The anatomy of this is pretty much spot on and the colouring is really good. I think the pose you chose for her also really reflects this horses personality. I know that white can be really difficult to shade but i think you have done a really good job with it. The one thing i did pick up on though was just the back hoof thats on the ground, the sock has quite a harsh line while the other white markings are soft on the edges. I think if that is softened then it will just bring the piece together a bit more. Other than that this is a wonderful piece and it all fits together really nicely :)

yes, it definately is. This is the first piece I was really happy with the white fur!
*goes looking at this leg* ... you're right O.o It's amazing how much details other viewers than oneself can still find on an image, that could be improved! Thanks a lot for the hint

The horse in this looks so alive - and really contrasts against the background. I know how difficult painting 'white' on a horse can be, even with greyscaling, and it came out wonderfully.

There's only two things with it that stand out to me and makes the horse look 'imposed' on the background (which, if a greyscale, I expect it is), and that's the lack of any kind of impact on the ground from the hind hoof, and the angle and style used on the tail (unlike the mane, which blends in nicely, perhaps because it has more brown in it).

You definitely should be... it looks spot on. So well done that I'm just a tiny bit envious ;)

One thing I didn't think of before, and is just really an add on depending on the setting (and how cold it is) - but if it's a bit of a thaw rather than midwinter, some splattered flecks of mud would accentuate the whole 'feel' to it. Never managed to pull that look off myself though...

Greyscales are never easy to color, but I think you got the horse's color very close to right! If I might suggest, what I do is a crop the highlights and lowlights layer to the base grey, merge that, then add a color layer underneath, putting the shading on either overlay or softlight, depending on what looks best. But the horse looks amazing, and very energetic.

The background is also nice, its suggests winter but doesn't 'throw it in your face' as some do. Overall, I like the piece c: It's clear that you have spent a lot of time on this. And I'm glad spike likes it.

I seriously have no idea how to really critique this. The anatomy is spot on and the level of detail is really deep.
I think that the shading was done really well, although some of the highlights are maybe a little too bright. I think it's because there's a mix of shading styles there like you went realistic and switched to shine.
The mane and tail almost don't fit into this piece, they sort of look like an afterthought.
The bg is a really nice addition, adds some depth to the image which would have been plain without.
I cannot get over that fur effect on the belly

This is really stunning! You've got some great detail and shading going on here, and it was a very smart choice to add that simple bg. It really adds wonderful depth. I think the mane, tail and feathers need a little work though. The ends of stands are all very blunt and cut off. Try using a brush with more pen pressure so strands fade out and become thinner at the ends. Also, try adding in some smaller strands to make it seem less chunky, and to help it flow better. Although I love the gorgeous shading and shine on the body, I feel like there are two different styles going on. One very rough which almost looks traditional, and another smoother sleek style, especially over the shoulder highlights. I think if you made the smooth stuff a little rougher, it would flow better. Overall, amazing work! Keep it up!

The first thing that caught my eye in this image is the magnificent shading that you have done with the horse. You brought Indian Blanket alive with the movement that I see in the image. The only thing that I can say that can be tweaked is the feathering on the horse, I kinda wish that there was more movement in it. Other than that I love the background that you drew it is so simple but it has a huge impact to the picture. The tree line with just a few detail places give it depth.
