Caudipteryx with Chicks by EWilloughby Caudipteryx with Chicks by EWilloughby

One of the new full-color paleoart pieces featured in my & Agahnim’s new book on the creationism/evolution controversy, God’s Word or Human Reason? I’ve been waiting to share this one for ages, as it is probably my favorite of my artworks right now.

This snapshot from the Early Cretaceous Yixian of Liaoning, China, depicts a Caudipteryx zoui mother and her two chicks darting across a shallow riverbed to the safety of denser cover beyond. In the background, a pair of shaggy tyrannosauroid Yutyrannus try to decide if they ought to be interested, and a pair of Changchengornis, a confuciusornithid basal bird, glide by. Together, the three genera represent a wide span on the continuum of feathered dinosaurs and of feather complexity: from hulking, filamentous carnivore, to ground-bound, display-feathered oviraptorosaur, to flight-capable bird.

This illustration, along with 11 other full-color paintings of feathered dinosaurs, appears in chapter 4 of our new book. If you haven’t already bought it on Amazon, you can order a signed copy directly from me for $40 via PayPal at e.deinonychus(at)gmail.com, personalized with a sketch of a bird or dinosaur of your choice! (International orders are totally fine, but please include an extra $5 for shipping.)

Many thanks to Jonathan for his critiques and suggestions on this piece, as well as to Doug Henderson, my favorite paleoartist, for his undeniable stylistic influence on the composition.

Really love the details, especially with the feathers, as well as the shade and lighting used in the background and of course with the different plant species used.

I admire how you use bird behavior to model your dinosaur's displayed behavior. In addition, I love how much more realistic and believable the scenes look because of your up to date depictions using feathers, non-broken wrists, and natural coloration. Absolutely breathtaking!

This is one of my favorite palaeoart scenarios: just peaceful animals walking through their habitat, not a drop of violently rendered blood to be seen. Also, I find the chicks (and the mother to a lesser extent) to be adorable.

Also, those Yutyrannus are really well hidden. I didn't notice them until much later when I actually bothered to read the description. I can be really lazy sometimes.

I think it's more of a matter of angles and distance.
The second chick appears to be just slightly farther away from the 'camera', using the feet as a reference point. It also seems to be running towards the camera. Thus, it appears to be smaller but it really isn't.

They're not different ages--baby birds often mature at different rates when one is fed more than the other. Hence the concept of the "runt" of a litter.

I remember when I was younger and found Caudipteryx a little less than aesthetically pleasing after looking at one reconstruction from a book. I didn't detest it, but it was just, ehhh...

The Caudipteryx here are perfect. And the two Yutyrannus make this piece even cooler.

As for the book, I feel like I should check that out.

Nope--I actually produced a slightly different version of this for the book, which depicts a pair of small pterosaurs in place of the birds. Jonathan was concerned that creationists would be confused by birds and non-avian dinosaurs appearing together before the chapter explained more about their timing and evolution. This is the version I vastly prefer, though.

Me too. Shame on Jonathan. ;) :P

BTW, something I've been meaning to ask: Any plans to review Naish/Barrett 2016? I just figured since you sometimes review books & this 1 features a lot of your work. Plus, I like reading about how awesome my favorite books are.
