Ready Player One is a 2018 film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the novel by Ernest Cline. At face value, it is a fun, spirited movie full to bursting with pop culture references and nods to 1980s family films and video games. However, it does have some deeper themes, meanings, and symbolism related to the nature of reality, freedom versus control, and the value of nostalgia.   Set in 2045 in a semi-dystopian America, the movie revolves around a virtual reality called the OASIS. Our protagonist is Wade Watts aka Parzival (Tye Sheridan), who comments that people spend more time in the OASIS and try to “outlive” the real world’s problems. He is amongst them, participating in a treasure hunt where the winner shall become the owner of the OASIS itself. RWBY adopts a particularly naming policy regarding characters. Monty Oum described the parametres as relating to colour. A character’s name must reference a colour in some shape or form. In-universe, self-expression was banned in the kingdom of Mantle to prevent attacks by the Grimm. Those who opposed this decision began to name their children after colours. Once the Great War ended, the four kingdoms embraced this naming tradition to stand together against oppression. Certain characters do not follow these rules. SONIC AND THE FREEDOM FIGHTERS The movie’s opening ten minutes are told through music and theatre, showing the golden age of the four Titans – Argus (Black Doom), Illumina, Gaia, and Solaris, as they created the universe using the Precioustone and Chaos Emeralds. Argus grants souls and minds to mortals, but terrorises their planets every few thousand years, feeding on their fear. He and Illumina are infatuated, but she does not approve of his entropic methods. Argus then creates the Xorda, the intelligent cephalopods who would go on to reshape Earth into Mobius. When they question and rebel against Argus, the three-eyed demon rages. Silently arguing with his fellow Titans about stripping mortals of their free will. They argue and eventually clash in a spectacular battle that last thousands of years, devastating planets and extinguishing suns. Illumina, Gaia, and Solaris manage to subdue Argus, using the Power of the Stars, the Precioustone, and the emeralds to trap him in Vichama.
