Plesiosaur Skull Reconstruction.
Commissioned piece - South Australian Museum

'Umoonasaurus demoscyllus is a new small-bodied (~2m) pliosauroid plesiosaur from the Lower Cretaceous of southern Australia. It is represented by several partial skeletons (one with a near complete skull is the most complete opalized vertebrate fossil yet known), and is unique in having large crests on the skull midline and above the orbits'

Hello I was just reading an article that featured your beautiful illustrations but I saw that the ABC uses your image and has cropped your name away, are you aware of this?

Thanks for checking out my work. I am familiar with the ABC having used the illustration I created (as well as a few other sites) and not citing me as the artist but it's difficult to meter and hold various sites accountable for this sort of thing. Unfortunate, but true. Thanks for the heads up though :)

Shame I didnt actually get recognition on the page though..*sigh*..These things happen.
Thank you for your comment. I doubt 'famous' is even slightly on the mark however.

I didn't know about this critter before a thread on Dinoforum about it, and man your restoration is very fine! Finally paleoartists found you!

I had not done any paleo-illustration prior to tackling this, so I was pretty pleased with the result. Having an interest in the prehistoric throughout my life obviously helped matters. I believe the original fossil was a well preserved skeleton labelled as 'Eric' - I was working from a resin cast of a skull fragment.

I find it interesting what you find online when you look for it - ie. The collection of paleo-artists here at Deviantart. I had a quick gander at your gallery also which was quite interesting - Do you work as a palaeoartist yourself?

I've done it once, for Olorotitan. But I'm mostly an amateur.
Yes, I recall: this plesiosaur is the opalized one, I found a pic on Community Webshots.
Well, look through my fav's and you'll find quite an ample collection of paleoart from various paleoartists from DA.

Wow - nice one Josh! I can't believe it is acrylics - it looks so watercoloury. I'll have to check out the fossil to see what you were working from - is it on display? Anyway I love a good dinosaur and this is one! :D

Thats probably just the horrible way i paint i suppose. If I do not water the paint slightly I end up with too much texture. Texture isnt so much of a problem - but it does interfere with detailing areas and scanning as well. The fossil isnt on display (Im not sure if or when it ever would be) - i largely sketched from a resin cast on the original. Thanks Jo

Obviously little it known about plesiosaur feeding habits or indeed the mechanics of their mouth. Some palaeontologists believe they have a similar system to crocodile - with muscles that closed the throat off. I just further emblished this design having a tongue extension :)
