GreyEveTheme FINAL- Windows 10 High Contrast Theme by eversins GreyEveTheme FINAL- Windows 10 High Contrast Theme by eversins
This theme can be used without system modifications! just download and double click the theme file.

_______________

This is the best I can do with the default Microsoft theming engine, if you don't like something, it is likely because of those limitations.
This is built upon their High Contrast theme, so be aware that some programs might look different. If you don't like it just select the Windows default theme and everything will be reverted.

If you don't trust a zip download (it only has 700 byte and I am a nice guy) you can just create your own theme file and copy this text I created into it.
_______________

Personal recommendations and fixes:
   Firefox:
First go to Preferences -> Color and Appearance -> Colors -> In the drop down menu, select "Never".
Install DarkReader to make websites dark, also install ShadowFox to Theme Firefox Dark on every page!

   Chrome:
        Install this theme.
Make all websites Dark with Dark Reader extension (set a hotkey to toggle on/off for sites).
To change styles of your most visited sites use the Stylus extension. Here is a list of good dark themes, for popular sites.
I use this extension to make the scroll bars dark.

    Visual Studio fix:
Visual Studio will switch to the High Contrast theme and remove syntax highlighting. Fortunately this can be fixed, I created a small guide here.

    f.lux:
This program reduces the color temperature of you monitor at night, blue/white light can cause headaches, stress and bad sleep.
Download f.lux and set it to a value comfortable to you, I personally use 3200K.
It might look strange to you at first, but try using it for 10 minutes at night, then turn it off to see how uncomfortable it is without.

All that I am able to change with this method of Windows theming is the color scheme, even that is heavily restricted/limited.

I do take request if you are willing to pay for my work. If you have questions about trying this your self feel free to ask.

Hi, thank you for your work!
I used the dark default theme of windows, but wasn't really well done
yours is much nicer and work better
however i noticed an issue, that was also here with the windows one.
While on a "open file" or "save as" etc. window from a software, if you do right click, the menus are empty
see screenshot below :
i.imgur.com/zoCxj3w.png

I wonder if you can do something about it, or if it's windows 10 related. It does the same at home and at the office. I looked online, all the solutions with changing registry stuff didn't do it for me :(

Hey, can you please specify a software where this happens? Please only name preinstalled applications like "notepad" for example. I will test it the next time I boot Windows.

I am pretty sure though that it has nothing to do with the theme, otherwise I would have noticed it by now and others would have posted about it before. I suspect that you maybe had some custom (patched) themes installed before which might cause this error?

Just try to enable it, it might actually work, I had a working theme for Windows 8 a long time ago.
If you want me to test or create the theme for Windows 7, again I can offer to contract me, as I would have to set up a test environment etc..

If you try it your self, feel free to ask for help.

Hello, i like your great theme and would like to use it every day. The only thing, what i dislike, is the problem with syntax highlighting. You posted a fix in the description, but the Key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0_Config\Themes doesn't exist. Sure i think it depends on the installed VS Version. I'm using Visual Studio 2019 Community. So i think HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\16.0_3fca7c5b could be the searched one. But it doesn't have a subdirectory called "Themes". Maybe i must do the setting in another place?

Hello, unfortunately I do not have a solution for you, as I have stopped using MS all together.

However, I can recommend checking out tools like "regmon/filemon" to see what happens when you change the theme in VS, maybe then you can catch the correct key. If you have questions, feel free to reply.

Alternatively I can offer you to contract me to check it out for you (payment only with success), if you are interested just pm me.

Hello,

First of all, awesome theme, love it and will use it. :)

However, I have a small issue, not sure is it possible to solve it. I'm using Microsoft Office a lot and would love to use the Excel default theme with your theme applied, because in this particular moment, with the theme applied, everything is dark inside worksheet so my work is almost unrecognized.

If I can do something, please, point me to the right direction. If nothing, when using Office, will go back to the default Windows 10 theme, and once done, back to darkness again. :)

Appreciate it, regards.

Hey, unfortunately I do not have an answer for you. I always assumed that it would be possible with the same way as for Visual studio: shrigley.com/visual-studio-201… .

I also read that there are some new themes in the new 360, I suspect high contrast will still be enforced though: support.office.com/en-us/artic…

I have one more idea which might be worth checking out, create a new user with default theme and launch the application with "runas", no idea if that would work but it could as each user has its own registry.

Sorry that I am not much help, I only use Linux nowadays and LibreOffice or Google Docs for documents.

Hope I could help.

A shame it affects just about everything else (browsers and such). However, nice work I do say.

That depends, I would say it does not affect too many applications. None that use client side decorations unless they enforce their own hight contrast theme (like office and Visual Studio), but there are usually workarounds for that.
You can disable it in browsers for the most part and games are unaffected. Some legacy apps might have problems but that usually does not effect most people, especially in daily use.

But you are totally right that it is or can be a pain in the ass. One of many reasons why I switched to Linux, multiple system wide dark themes with one click.

Perfectly amazing theme, only problem for me is it's not working with the latest version of Windows 10, theme keeps resetting to some default high contrast one every reboot. Can't get it to stick, how to fix? Thanks.

Sorry, for some reason MS does not think I need the latest update, I give it a try every few days but no update yet. I haven't bothered to download it manually because I just use Windows if I play one specific game and usually wan't to return to my normal system as fast as possible.

No worries, your theme is just so good, really want to get it working again lol. Dunno if this problem is only my system, would be good to know if anyone else has trouble getting this theme to stick. I haven't been able to find a solution yet.

Found a work around. Copy GreyEveThemeV2.1 theme file to path C:\Users\"Insertyourusername"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Not ideal and you get a themes window popping up every windows startup, but at least it saves having to manually click the theme file every boot up.

I finally got the newest release and have to say that I could not reproduce your problem. Seems to be connected to your system in some way.

Glad you found  a workaround either way.

This is a conversation that I suppose will keep me from installing this wonderful theme. I have the very latest version of windows 10 and if its not sticking, not applying, then I will not be able to use it.  :(

Great work on this simple theme!

Have you by any chance figured out a work around for the black boxes in chrome? It's literally the only thing that bugs me after this theme pretty much just fixed everything.

Thank you. What exactly are you talking about? could you post a screenshot?
Since Chrome uses client side decorations it should not be affected, unless you installed an extension which it suggests after installing the theme.

I think others have had this too, in any high contrast theme, chrome goes into high contrast mode and sets the background colour of the bookmarks bar and user name (in the top right) to black. Setting your theme file to not include the line:

HighContrast=3

will make chrome launch in normal mode but that's not ideal because a lot of other backgrounds go back to eye burning white. I've tried finding out if you can just force chrome to ignore that you have high contrast on but I can't seem to find anything that does that.

Sorry, never found a workaround, or as you mentioned no way to launch apps in non-high contrast mode.

I suggest you give FF another try, it is quite good now and about even with chrome if you take everything into consideration. The big plus is that it is very customable in comparison.

Here are some flags to make it feel more like Chrome: pastebin.com/Ly7kMBu9
If you need the chrome "apps" feature, look at ice, it is for Linux but the same thing should work for Windows if you just do the steps manually: github.com/peppermintos/ice
If you want to try something new where you don't have to bother with strange themes: youtu.be/wWTXKqIb_2Q?t=13

Finally, someone else wanting to go dark without completely changing the feel of Windows 10 or modifying DLLs. Maybe you can help me...

I've had Windows 10 for about 2 years and I've tried searching for something like this from the start. Something happened a month or two ago that broke Windows 10(I think it was the creator's update but I don't know for sure) and I had to go back to Windows 7. Long story short, I missed a lot of the features of Windows 10, a lot of little things that were just not as fluid in Windows 7. So, I switched back a few days ago and I've been trying to customize everything back the way I had it. I've got all of my icons and programs customized the way I like, but I can't find a theme that does what I want. I'm just looking for something like this: i.imgur.com/Ufkkyiv.png

Super simple, I just want to basically invert the colors in Explorer and context menus etc. I don't care if I have to do it myself, I've just been looking around for a very long time for a theme or a program I can use to do this that doesn't cost $20. If you can point me in the right direction, or if you know how to throw this together easily, PLEASE let me know.
