Framed Faux-Paint Fi ~ (The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword)

Because nothing says "you are important to the story" better than a hand-painted portrait in a snazzy carved frame! I am a dummy!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About the Piece:

After doing two other "faux-paint" portraits of Princess Zelda and Midna, I decided to break out of Twilight Princess characters and do a portrait of Fi from Skyward Sword as a part of this series. The entire base was drawn quickly in Illustrator before importing it to Photoshop to add gradients and paint on Fi's face. Fi is very human-like in shape but yet doesn't have any really strong features; it's almost like she's made of glass. To keep that sort of appearance going, I relied almost entirely on highlights, shadows, and differences in colors to establish her features. This resulted in a very different appearance for this portrait than the Princess Zelda and Midna ones that preceded it. Knowing that my final product was going to be rather atypical compared to the other faux-paint pieces, I decided to just go with it and make the piece even more different by doing something I actually had wanted to do with the other pieces: frame it! La la la la I found some awesome HQ frame stock here on dA from EveyD to use and I think it takes everything up a notch. ;) I made this series thinking of paintings that might hang in the halls of Hyrule Castle itself, so a beautiful carved frame around a "painting" of a companion like Fi is exactly what I wanted to do. I really like how this turned out and I hope you Fi fans enjoy it, too!

I'm also working on "upgrading" the other faux-paint pieces to match. Look for those soon! :D

Thanks to :iconeveyd: EveyD for her picture frame stock here: fav.me/d50tfwv

Thank you! I'm very glad you like them and appreciate the awesome comment.

haha If these were easier to make, I would do more characters in an instant! :D I actually do have one of Link for this series but it's currently far from finished. :cries: These were all very labor intensive pieces and I've just never gotten around to finishing that one. I really WANT to finish it, though, seeing as 100% of the base work in Illustrator is done and some of the shading/coloring in Photoshop, as well. Having Link to round off the quartet would be pretty cool, though, so I will get it done one day! :P

Haha, your welcome ^-^ And i totally understand the feeling of having unfinished things i want to get done xD I always end up moving on to other things before finishing them :3 It'll be cool to see the finished Link painting in the future when you end up finishing it though :)

Thank you! :D haha I'm definitely working on how to best draw noses...they are something I just find so strange and odd to create, especially on someone like Fi who looks like she's made of glass with no solid lines. Confused So I agree her shnoz could be better. ;) I'm hopeful once I get a digital drawing tablet I can really work on improving it all! Thank you for the comment!

Oh cool!, was this hand drawn?, if so that's amazing!, i always had a very hard time drawing noses as well, though there are a few tricks you can learn for doing them really good!, if ever you want i can show you some tips on them, I do Join.Me often enough and would be happy to show you some things :D (Join.Me is a screen sharing site where i can basically broadcast what I'm doing online if you didn't know :) ) just send me a message whenever! :D

The base shapes/colors were done with the pen tool in Illustrator but all of her features - like the nose - were drawn with a mouse in Photoshop. So I'm not sure if that qualifies as hand-drawn...sort of? haha :D I actually enjoy using a mouse to draw a lot, but when it comes to establishing features like the nose just using shading/highlighting a mouse is incredibly lackluster, particularly in this piece. I'm not really interested in Join.Me but I appreciate the offer ;) Thank you for the comment!

Woah, drawing with a mouse can be sooo difficult (at least for me lol), so hats off to that!, but cool, that's an interesting approach to drawing, and no probs, if ever you like later I'll still be doing it so yeah XD, and thank you for this wonderful peace of art! :aww:

All the "faux-paint" portraits - including this one - are created with vector bases in Illustrator and then the facial features + details are painted on with digital brushes in Photoshop. So sort of. :D I uploaded a deviation to show the progression/building of my original faux-paint Princess Zelda piece; the process was pretty much identical for this one, too. You can check it out here if you like: fav.me/d6tb91u

This is brilliant! (As is your Zelda portrait :D) I only wish her shoulders were squared towards us, the viewers - somehow her posture doesn't evoke the power and nobility of Fi. I think the symmetry of your Zelda portrait really brings out her power, and I wish you'd done the same with Fi.

Nonetheless, I love your play of textures and shading, especially the purple highlights on her blue side :D

Thank you for such detailed feedback ;) I'm really glad to hear you enjoy the piece!

Personally, I don't think Fi commands the same power and nobility as Princess Zelda does so I don't feel a portrait done in the same way as the Zelda one would be appropriate for her character or role. Fi is a supportive companion who assists the greater characters/plot lines and is ultimately a creation of one of those greater characters (being Hylia/Zelda). So to me, I would never put her on the same sort of scale in regards to power or importance as Zelda as a whole and thus wouldn't portray her in the exact same fashion. I also find her character much more light-hearted and casual, if you will, in comparison to the Twilight Princess incarnation of Princess Zelda. Fi does sing and dance/twirl around a lot! :D I felt a straight-on, symmetrical, blunt, dramatic portrait was definitely appropriate for the Princess Zelda of the tumultuous, dark TP storyline; Fi and Skyward Sword overall as a game just don't carry that same seriousness or weight. The Princess Zelda in TP really commands a straight on, powerful, almost intimidating portrait given her role and the grave circumstances. Fi is a helper, a friend, a support system and thus - to me - not a character that would command being portrayed like the Zelda of TP.

/END RLY LONG EXPLANATION. I appreciate your input though! :) Thank you for the comment!

Well...yeah, yeah, I totally agree with everything you said. That makes boats of sense Clap

I think I found the real reason why Fi's pose still bothers me - she's just too mathematically precise to not look symmetrical xD Also, on a more serious note, I think the slump in her posture makes her look human, like she feels, rather than knows, that her position is inferior to Link, Zelda, and the goddess. But! I still respect your decision to pose her the way you did. I think your reasoning is very sound :D

haha That is a huge compliment in itself! ;) I think every artist has things to learn and can broaden their views/perspectives through interacting with other artists and non-artists alike. Whether it's agreement or disagreement, like or dislike, one opinion or another, I think it's all valuable and I always want to hear it. I'm glad you keep coming back and I'm always open to anything you - and others - have to say! :D
