Asexual Awareness Week (October 20-26) by EveMoon Asexual Awareness Week (October 20-26) by EveMoon
Thank mornings for coffee metaphores. :D

If you're confused, check it out www.asexuality.org/home/ .

In case of misinterpretations, I used coffee as a metaphore for sexuality, not sex. That's why I thought it would be black coffee (black is also the colour for asexuality) instead of not liking coffee at all.

The cake is an asexual joke and the cake here has the asexual flag on it too.

You´re welcome.

I think it´s a good idea to indicate that asexuality is still a kind of sexuality that simply doesn´t manifest in liking people in a sexual way.
That´s why I prefer the term "allosexual" over "sexual".

I'm glad you think so, I agree. I like allosexual better as well. Sure, some asexual people consider themselves to lack a sexuality altogether, but I'm pretty sure the vast majority doesn't.

Recently, we had the discussion on AVEN (aven-forum.de) about the associations people could have when they are confronted with the terms "sexual people" or "allosexual people". The first argument was that "Allosexual" isn´t understood even in parts of the Ace community and to expect allosexuals to understand it (and the necessity of it) was too much to hope for. Another argument was that most people don´t like being labelled by others - me neither - and some could see it as some sign of "elitism" when we use a term to distinguish Aces from Non-Aces. But the same goes for "Sexual", too.
I even understand these points, even though these aren´t mine.

Yes, I understand those points too, but it just isn't as simple as some people want to make it. I don't think it's really about expecting anyone to understand something. It should simply be a discussion were different people try to understand each other. Yes, some people feel threatened when they're labeled by others. But I don't think it would be a good reason to stop inventing words to describe our experiences or distinguish one group of people from another. After all, a reaction like that comes from prejudice, and while we should be sensitive about things like these, we shouldn't cater to it. Of course we shouldn't expect anyone to immediately understand a new word that is being applied to them by someone else, and if a better word comes up we should be open to it, but that doesn't mean one word won't eventually become common knowledge and generally accepted. These things take time. And after all, we have to use words to talk about things, so it shouldn't be offensive to try to come up with a word for something that exists. And I think it should be a process of trial and error, and it shouldn't be thought of as "us labeling them", because anyone can suggest a new word for a phenomenon they perceive. That's simply how language is created. If someone thinks it's about elitism, it's a misunderstanding that is probably, again, caused by prejudice. (Of course, some people do invent offensive words to put others down but when it's not about that, it's a misunderstanding that sensible people should be able to overcome with common sense.) Only spreading information can overcome prejudice, so I don't think we should shy away from introducing new words because of it, we should just be smart and sensitive about the topics we're discussing, and explain why we're using a certain word about a certain phenomenon or group of people, and also listen to better suggestions if people find a certain word offensive. Of course, some people aren't capable of this kind of dialogue but in that case, they're probably also incapable of stepping into another person's shoes and caring about anything that isn't about them, so, they aren't really those anyone can have any fruitful interaction with in the first place. Different groups of people have always had to work on understanding each other, but in time, it'll get better. Like, some people still feel threatened about being called "cis-gender" but the word is catching on now, and it seems to me that more and more people are accepting it, and it's becoming common knowledge. Besides, if people's arguments are along the lines: "I don't want to be called cis-gender/allosexual because I'm just normal", then THAT is elitism. Thinking your experience is above someone else's just because it's more common is elitism. Trying to have dialogue about people's different qualities isn't. Even though you sometimes need new words for it. It's okay to find a certain word offensive when you have a reason to, but not wanting an objectively perceivable quality of yourself labeled altogether comes from the person's ego, and isn't a concern of those trying to make language make more sense.

Like, if you're short, it's okay to be offended by the word "midget" but the word "short" is just descriptive of a fact, and if someone is offended by that, it's because of their own insecurities, and it would be laughable to want to make the whole language cater to that by erasing all the words that describe being short, and requiring people to think of short as a standard and therefore just call it "normal". This is essentially what people are doing when they refuse to be "labeled" at all, which I think isn't the best word, since it's not about labeling in a negative sense. It's about describing the world.

Haha, that was a mouthful. I guess I had a lot of opinions on this topic. It's just that, yes, people should take the group's feelings into consideration when they're calling them by a term they haven't heard before, but people also shouldn't be afraid to suggest things just in case they might offend someone, because that way, no meaningful dialogue and learning will happen.

Thank you so much for your answer and for sharing your thoughts about this topic.
We use language to describe our world and since everyone perceives the world differently, it´s only natural for words being myriad.

>> Besides, if people's arguments are along the lines: "I don't want to be called cis-gender/allosexual because I'm just normal", then THAT is elitism. Absolutely.
I met people who argumented against using words for different qualities, but from a different viewpoint. According to them, naming qualities and differences was the source of discrimination and people wouldn´t discriminate as long as there wasn´t differentiation through words. As long as all people were called the same, no one would discriminate because no one could name the difference. And that´s just plain ignorant of the real dynamics of discrimination, which starts long before there are words.
Words take time, that´s true. Ideas as well. Take the idea of women having equal rights. Or the idea that people of a certain ethnic group aren´t superior to others, only different in certain aspects.

I'm not exactly sure how it started, but there's a thing called "better than sex -cake" and I think it's somehow related to that; someone figured that asexuals can actually agree that "cake is better than sex", so people started to use it as a symbol and also a way to greet new people on AVEN forums: "Have some Have your cake and eat it too !"

It started with an online forum for asexuals welcoming new members with cake.  It just sort of caught on after that.

... I like it with sugar and possibly syrup.  I have no idea what that means.  ^^;

(I mean, I prefer it with cream, too, but I was playing up the angle you're going with here.)
