The Dodo-raptor by Eurwentala The Dodo-raptor by Eurwentala
This is the other hypothesis about what Balaur bondoc might have looked like. Or at least that's what I was trying to do. The problem is, I just couldn't take this guy seriously. Despite trying hard to make a good life reconstruction, I ended up with these incredibly stupid-looking vegan dodo things. There's another, who eats horsetails while smiling stupidly, but it's not even worth finishing.

So here's my dodo raptor. You get what you order, or something like that. At least it was fun to do.

The one case where going the simple route is not only successful but also the most ideal possibility that could have been chosen. This is perfectly refreshing and right at home with what velociraptor could have been and probably was. Well done.

Too bad for balaur, but a good revenge for the dodo, it'll now use its claws on the big bad humans that drove it extinct. lol.

D'awww, look at his sweet face!

I also have a sketch (I might have to bring it to finish now) of a literally pacifistic Balaur dressed like a hippie and giving a peace sign (and she's only got two fingers so it's built-in!) She bears a striking resemblance to Mokey from "Fraggle Rock".

With dodos, you have to remember that most of the ones in captivity had to have their beaks severely trimmed, as people found out the hard way that a dodo could give a very nasty bite if it felt like it.

Beautiful restoration. I'm wondering though, how could a herbivorous dromaeosaurid compete with the ornithopods and sauropods it shared its space with?

Well, that is an interesting question. And one that probably can't be answered, at least as long as we don't have much more evidence. Balaur might have had a different diet: some specific kind of plants or parts of them. Large herbivores (and I think cow-sized sauropod counts as large) tend to be bulk feeders, eating most of the green things they find. Balaur is small enough to be more selective. Or it might have been an omnivore, balancing it's diet with insects or carcasses. There's plenty of room for speculation there. :)

I can't think of many ways of drawing a less impressive raptor. :P But don't tell that to him. He still has the killing claw, you know.
