Poor Tolka by Eupraxia Poor Tolka by Eupraxia
A little side story about Kelu's eldest brother since we probably won't get to it in the actual story.

If you're new to Far to the North you can read it here.

This is a realistic depiction of marriage in pre-industrial societies.

Since having lots of children was considered important (more helping hands on the family farm, greater chance that some survives to pass on the family name, etc), a man looking for a bride in that time would usually try to marry a woman who was in her teens or twenties even if he himself was in his forties or older. Of course sometimes it lead to tangled family trees.

"Far to the North" is a good story.

Coupling this with the fact that all three of them were wearing black outfits (which were very similar) in the pages with the refugees makes it very hard to tell any one apart. I thought Nirin's mom was Kelu at first!

Well that explains why I can only tell the ladies apart by how they have their hair.

Tolka, and his father, seem a bit on the tall side.  Granted, men are routinely bigger than women, but the difference is more like 6 inches rather than a foot.
Maybe we can blame diet.  The men hog all the meat and so the women stay short while men reach full height.  This might also explain Kelu's height.  As the baby of the family, and only daughter, she might be spoiled, and fed a lot of meat, thus reaching a height well above the other ladies.

Everyone in the family is over six feet.  It's not really anyone hogging food (who has more opportunities to eat the food than the ones preparing it?) it's more like Kelu's dad is just extra tall, so of course his sons and daughter are gonna be bigger.

That would be horribly awkward. Probably shouldn't have married your step-mother's cousin.

That would have been REALLY awkward for Tolka to have a stepmom that's barely older than him. It must have really weird for her too.
